About the Course

Looking at bright colours, strong contrasts and complex forms, this course introduces you to bold techniques to create large, expressive drawings of flowers in pen and ink with colour washes. Simple, fun and accessible whatever your drawing abilities.

This is a relatively fast-paced course: you will spend around one to three hours on each drawing, trying out different ideas on each one, and each drawing is likely to be of a single flower. The majority of projects will be studio based, with a mixture of garden and market specimens that have been brought in by your tutor. But there will be some opportunities each day to try drawing outdoors, particularly at the front of the Mill and Willy Lotts House, where there is a garden planting.

We take a variety of approaches looking at relative tone, contrast, colour, structure and abstraction to create artworks that command attention. We also explore the use of digital camera and tablet to gather visual information, and will draw natural specimens in the field (weather permitting). An important aspect of the course will be to tackle the use of strong colours with pen and ink, covering a number of useful exercises relating to colour theory.

Course tutor: Debora Cane
Debora is an enthusiastic art tutor with over 30 years’ experience. All of her courses concentrate on simple concepts and practical techniques and are suitable for everyone.

What to Bring
A pad of good quality cartridge paper (around 200gsm) A4 size.
A pad of good quality cartridge paper (around 200gsm) A3 size.
Sketchbook to draw out in the field: reasonable quality, around 140gsm or above (a standard Seawhite sketchbook is absolutely fine) around A4 size, hard backed. Bring the size and shape you feel comfortable with.
Digital camera, tablet or smartphone to take photographs and view pictures when back at the studio (note that, increasingly, students bring a tablet).
A black drawing pen with ink that is not water soluble when dry. I use a refillable LAMY cartridge pen with Noodlers Bullet Proof Black Ink. But any pigment fineliner pen that you feel comfortable drawing with which is not water soluble (both the Staedtler and Faber-Castell Pitt pigment fine liners work well).
Brown ink drawing pen with ink that is not water soluble (both the Staedtler and Faber-Castell pigment fine liner pens come in brown too, I have a separate LAMY cartridge pen with Noodlers bullet-proof brown ink). Note that we will undertake specific projects in brown pen with watercolour.
A POSCA white brush pen to correct mistakes (optional).
A couple of 2B pencils and rubber (note that poorer quality pencils are best for this course because we need to be able to rub them out easily, graphite drawing pencils tend to stick to the paper).
A good set of watercolours. The wider your range of colours the better. I personally prefer Schmincke but any good quality art brand that you feel comfortable using.
A small set of good quality watercolour brushes in a variety of thicknesses. Bring what you are comfortable using (your tutor will have some medium quality brushes that you can borrow, so there is no need to buy any particular new brushes for this course).
