Here is a great opportunity to improve your COPPERPLATE with Julie Chaney live online via Zoom.
The lessons are on Saturday afternoons, every other week, starting at 2pm and lasting for 2 hours.
They are informal sessions with attention given to the ability levels of the students taking part. A portion of the lesson is spent discussing particular aspects of the script and/or its applications, either introduced by me or by participants. Sharing discoveries or solving problems together is key to improvement.
These are stand alone sessions and you can join on any date for any number of classes. However, regular attendance is encouraged for steady improvement.
Exercises and practice suggestions are provided. Students can email images of their work to me prior to the session for discussion with the group. Active writing during the lesson is optional.
- advice on many different tools & techniques
- guidance on letter construction, shapes, heights, spacing, ratios, variations, etc
- study of important details within letters and refinements
- exchange of ideas on methods, materials and tools, new discoveries, etc
- live demonstrations
- review of student work
- general discussion and feedback
I’m happy to answer any questions.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
I offer many exemplars and worksheets for printing at home (A4) and also suggest exercises and projects to aid progress.
A link to join the Zoom session will be sent ahead of each workshop.
It is assumed as Improvers that you will have the basic materials (drawing equipment, calligraphy pens, ink and paper). Do get in touch if you’d like to discuss what materials you already have and their suitability. I stock some calligraphy materials and can supply by post.
A notebook is useful as we cover a wide range of topics.

I have been teaching myself Copperplate from a book for the last few months and was absolutely delighted to discover Julie's class. "Book learning" can only take you so far so it was brilliant to be able to see how to form the letters, both capital and lowercase, and have some homework so I can put it all into practice. Brilliant. Thank you Julie!
Response from Julie Chaney:Thanks very much, Jo. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the session. It was lovely to have you join the class and I do hope you're able to make swift progress building on the fundamentals you've already learnt. I definitely like your enthusiasm!
I can thoroughly recommend this online workshop. Julie is an excellent teacher with a comfortable, friendly approach. She explains clearly how to form the letters, and with the camera focused on her writing, it is easy to follow her pen strokes. The session is quite informal and is well-paced, so there is a real sense of achievement at the end.
Response from Julie Chaney:Thank you for this, Janet. Your thoughtful comments are very much appreciated. I think they may also help to relieve apprehensions anyone might have about taking live online classes. It is wonderful that the technology allows us to share your lettering onscreen and for you to view my demos all in real time. So pleased it's working well for you! Thanks again.
I have done both class and more recently online tutorials with Julie and would thoroughly recommend both.
Julie makes her sessions relaxed, friendly and informative, I look forward to the online tutorials each week. Julie gives each of the participants support and positive feedback on their work and is very patient in answering any questions we have had.
Thanks Julie for offering such enjoyable online tutorials, I have learnt so much.
Response from Julie Chaney:That's lovely to hear, Carole, thank you. I appreciate your support and it's gratifying to know that you're getting so much out of the online sessions. For your part, the amount of effort you put in each week helps the others too. Thanks again.
I’ve spent a few weeks doing Julie’s zoom workshops in copperplate and italic during lockdown. Really enjoyed the sessions which have been friendly and informative with lots of tips to improve your lettering journey. Would recommend Julie’s classes to beginners and improvers. Thanks Julie ❤️
Response from Julie Chaney:That's kind of you, Bridgette, and thank you for taking part. I'm so glad the workshops have been a help to you. In turn, you've made a valuable and creative contribution each session and it's been a pleasure having you in the group. Keep practising!
I have been having calligraphy lessons from Julie Chaney for 18 months.
She is an excellent teacher, explaining and demonstrating the formation of individual letters, as well as teaching artwork and gilding.
She is a very patient tutor, generous to share her expertise and the wide knowledge that she has gained from her experience, that does not appear in any textbook.
I highly recommend her courses.
Response from Julie Chaney:Thank you, Sue, for your kind words. I very much appreciate your support of my classes including my online sessions. It's always a pleasure to have you as a student and to see how far you've progressed over time (in no small part due to your dedicated practice!). Thanks again, Julie.
