What a creatively therapeutic morning!
I spied this special offer over on Instagram a month back and thought what a great present for me and my husband to do together and how right I was!
This morning we travelled over to Kings Cliff to the pottery studio of Potterydayz and were greeted by Richard, our master potter, another couple; Juliet and Dion.. and not forgetting the resident cat and a cup of coffee.
Richard’s expertise is amazingly quick, not like us beginners, at the three basics on centralising, opening and lifting. He gives you slow instructions with his demonstrations to get you on your way with your own wheel to play on.
It looks so easy, especially after watching weeks on The Great British Pottery Throwdown! Alas, it’s not quite as easy as it looks; arms in - speed up - water here and there - remove the water - delicately on and delicately off as one quick move and it’s destroyed before your eyes, but it’s so much fun.
Richard guides you into getting the right techniques.. clay after clay as you try to learn by your mistakes. I failed on two attempts with one coming in half lol and the other ending up a wibbly wobbly mess... it’s all in the learning... and then with a bit of help you’ve got something. It’s time to stop and finish off.
It’s hard work but relaxing, it’s draining but exhilarating, it’s dirty (very dirty) but you don’t care! After you’ve pushed, squeezed, pulled, you eventually get your vase, jug, bowl or whatever your creation looks nearest to...😳, you obviously feel very proud.
The workshops are 2 hours give or take, and no rush to get you out the door when you’ve finished. It’s a great experience whether you do the experience with a partner, friends or on your own. I’ll be picking my half-vase up in a few weeks to glaze it.
Thanks Richard for a great morning.

Response from Potterydayz:Delighted you both got so much out of the workshop. Look forward to seeing you both again soon.
I just wanted to say what a great Pottery day we had with Richard ealier this month. Both I and my wife Ann are relative novices, but Richard's teaching methods, manner and obvious love of pottery was inspiring, and we improved so much in the hours we spent with him. We're both very keen to return, and I understand that Raku sessions are also available, which would be amazing.
Many thanks to Richard - a lovely, patient man, with years of experience and skills to share (he also makes great soup!)

Response from Potterydayz:Hi Peter and Ann,
Excellent experience of potting thanks to Richard. Very personal tuition, showing us step by techniques. Enabling us to create ceramics pots from the wheel and hand building. We were so pleased with what we learnt and made during the session. All topped off with a delicious homemade soup. We will definitely be booking again.

Our family bought us vouchers for a half day of pottery. Was extremely pleased with the experience. Richard is very knowledgable and the fact it was just us and him meant we learnt a lot. Looking forwards to painting them once dry. Thank you again Richard.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience which was enhanced with the very attentive, patient and amusing host Richard. Sharing the afternoon with my 13 year old granddaughter was obviously very special but we had such a great time and found the pottery wheel quite addictive. We are both looking forward to glazing our efforts. Thank you.

I really enjoyed my day with Richard, what an excellent teacher - showing real detail about how to actually use your hands and your body to get the clay doing what you want. I'm looking forward to having another go.
I ended up with 2 'pots' from the wheel and 2 handmade. Richard gave me the instruction I needed and then gave me the space to try it out for myself, patiently giving me yet another new start until I got it right. Great achievement as far as I was concerned - my 2nd pot was quite delightful! Thank you for a satisfying day.

Brilliant workshop with Richard! My daughter was absolutely thrilled to use the pottery wheel for the first time and with Richard's guidance we have made beautiful pieces of pottery. Can't wait to go back for a glazing session! Definitely recommend the course as a family adventure or individual experience.

Had an excellent day in November on one of Richard's all day courses, throwing pots in the morning and hand sculpting in the afternoon. Richard is a great relaxed teacher...we made a lot of messes! But he just kept encouraging and showing us and we managed to throw pots we were happy to have fired. Can thoroughly recommend this..one of us is quite creative, the other not so much but both of us enjoyed it so much and was lovely to do something together.

I had a voucher bought for me from my husband. I had not done pottery since school (32 years ago ). I went along to Richard’s a few weeks ago and had a great day throwing pots and hand building. Richard is an excellent, patient teacher and made it a fun day.
I would highly recommend this course and will be returning myself
Thank you Richard

Booked a day with Richard for my husbands Birthday. Wasn’t really sure what to expect.
Richard made us feel very welcome and was very helpful (with me) as this was my first time making coil pots.
We had a lovely lunch which Richard had made for us from his own home grown veg and some yummy bread. After lunch we moved on to the potters wheel. My husband really enjoyed this part as he knew what to do .... me on the other hand needed more help (which Richard provided). We both had a really enjoyable day with some laughs ‘thrown’ in along the way.
Thank you Richard

Response from Potterydayz:That's great Yvonne and delighted you enjoyed the day. I look forward to seeing you in May.
As a total newbie to pottery I was a little worried about not being able to do anything and coming away disappointed. I couldn’t have been more wrong and my worries were unfounded.
Richard was kind, patient and a brilliant teacher.
I had an absolute blast and can’t wait to see how my items turned out!
It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or if you’re a worrier, Richard was great throughout the whole session!

Saturday 28th September
Our 'clayday' with Richard was fantastic. He took us (daughter and I) through the process of throwing a pot on the wheel and watched and coached while I attempted to remember what he had said and what I had done 60 years ago!!! In the afternoon he showed us how to make a pot with clay 'sausages' which I was none too good at rolling! It is always good to leave a course feeling pleased that you have made something unique. I can't wait to go back to decorate my pots.
If you are looking for a fun day with a knowledgeable, patient, and caring teacher, this is the course for you. Richard also makes super tasty soup for lunch!

We had a fantastic day learning how to throw and hand build pottery. Richard is a great teacher who was very welcoming, patient and explained everything clearly. We came away having made a number of items which we will be returning to glaze in a few weeks. We would highly recommend this as a great day's activity!

I booked a Pottery afternoon for a team of colleagues as a celebration for completing a project. The afternoon was great fun and suitable for all the team. Richard was very accommodating with us all and very enthusiastic and informative teaching us the basics of throwing and hand building. We all learnt a great deal from the session and were all able to make something to take away with us. Would recommend as a great fun team activity!
