Wax Carving & CASTING for Jewellery Making - Two Day Workshop

X

Description

This is an extension of my popular one day introduction to wax carving for jewellery making - with the addition of a second day where we focus on casting techniques that are practical to do at home, or in a small workshop, to turn your wax carving (or other ideas) into wearable jewellery. Wax carving is a technique used to create masters for lost wax casting and is a great way to create more sculptural, 3D designs than would generally be possible to fabricate directly in metal. During the wax carving day, we cover the key skills to create a simple design, discuss and experiment with different waxes, and as well, with a variety of tools. Carve / model your own ring design, and/or a series of test pieces to try out different ideas. During the casting day, we will use a selection of methods depending on the individual student projects including sand casting, water casting or cuttlefish casting to either translate the carvings from day 1, or other ideas into solid wearable metal. Learn how best to heat and pour the molten metal, and how to clean up and finish your pieces after casting. Maximum class size of 3 people at my dedicated workshop space here in Camden Town, London NW1 Course runs from 10.30am to 5pm with a 45 minute lunch break.

What's included in the price?

During the first day you will work on your own variation of one or more simple ring designs, as these are the most straightforward to get started with. If you have a specific design in mind - please get in touch to discuss this in advance. Of course other shapes than rings can be carved, but often require a little more practice first. During day two we will experiment with different casting options and cast your own jewellery piece or elements The fee includes; - two days of tuition - 10.30am to 5pm, use of all relevant tools, all wax and any other consumables needed for your test samples or projects, an allowance of silver for casting, tea, coffee and refreshments. Lunch is not included, but there are many local cafes. You will leave with one or more carvings that you can choose to get cast into your chosen metal, as well as all the information you need to be able to do so, and to create more designs at home in your own time.
