Create beads from a sustainable source. Come join a one day bead-making workshop in a Warwickshire village and go home with a unique necklace made from papier-mâché beads, perhaps earrings too.
Love putting different colours and textures together? Create a collection of handmade fresco-inspired beads and experience the magic of threading them and seeing your necklace emerge. This workshop will seek to recreate that ancient long lost treasure effect which is so appealing. Bring old egg boxes, a sieve and medium sized saucepan, plus any beads you might like to include.
My students are always amazed and delighted with what they produce.
New life for preloved necklaces.
We will take them to bits, reassemble them and combine them with homemade beads. This is not a repair shop, but a way of breathing new life into old treasures.
The process is straightforward and easy to recreate in your own kitchen.
Suitable for all abilities.
I obtained a BA(Hons) in Textile design from Central St Martins, and was taught by Cecil Collins and Edward Bawden. After attending a Summer School at Bleddfa led by Hazel Bradley and Michael Harvey, I was inspired with storytelling, particularly ancient myth, and now regularly tell stories to elderly patients in a hospital, often accompanied with illustrations. Research for these ancient myths at the British Museum inspired these beads.
My work is to be found at Primavera Gallery Cambridge, Bleddfa Arts Centre, Royal Pump Rooms Leamington Spa. I am a member of the Association of Midland Artists, and Leamington Studio Artists. I am also part of Warwickshire Open Studios which takes place at St Gregory's Church, Offchurch, CV33 9AP in June.

I've had a fantastic creative day. The whole process is amazing. Eleanor was very welcoming and we had a beautiful lunch. I'm very pleased to have a finished necklace to take home. Thank you, Melissa
I attended a workshop with Eleanor on10/7 in the hope of kickstarting my jewellerymaking mojo. I was not disappointed! We had a fabulous day and Eleanor is an amazing tutor. I can definately recommend this workshop.
Really great course, lovely location, fabulous lunch, very relaxed
Response from Eleanor Allitt Handmade beads:Thanks Gabby, lovely to have your review.
Spent yesterday with Eleanor making beads from pulped egg boxes. Eleanor is an excellent teacher and it was inspiring to see all the lovely painted beads she had made. After a delicious lunch with Eleanor and her partner Colin we were shown how to decorate the beads and make them into lovely necklaces and earrings. I also liked that we were a small group.
Response from Eleanor Allitt Handmade beads:Thanks Karen,
A very enjoyable day, and by the end I created a perfectly wearable necklace - I'm amazed. It all starts with boiling up eggboxes, transforming them into beads and decorating in any colour, on their own, or combined with metal/glass/plastic beads to give that extra dimension to a necklace/bracelet. It was so satisfying to learn a technique in one day and be able to carry on at home with simple kit and materials.
We worked on Eleanor's kitchen table in a small friendly group which was fun and supportive. All the materials were provided, as was a delicious homemade lunch. Eleanor creates lovely beads and shares her knowledge in easy to follow steps. It was one of the best craft days I have attended, and I highly recommend it.
Response from Eleanor Allitt Handmade beads:Hello Nicky,
An excellent (and well-structured) course. During a single day, we made beads using recycled materials, decorated them and created our own necklaces. The end results were astonishingly good. The group (of all abilities, from keen beaders to absolute beginners) was small, so all got individual attention where necessary. And the home-cooked lunch was delicious!
This was a wonderful, gentle, relaxing day, resulting in my daughter, 11 year old grand-daughter, her friend and myself each making an impressive necklace. Eleanor showed us examples of necklaces, told us how she came to experiment with the process of transforming egg boxes into beads, and patiently took us through step by step. We were given plenty of opportunity to experiment with painting previously made beads, using a wide variety of colours and metallic paints. Then, after a lovely lunch, with lots of laughter, we painted our own beads, and threaded them into our necklaces. I wore mine this morning and a very well dressed friend of mine complimented me on my outfit. I highly recommend this course and am looking forward to a return visit with other friends of mine.
Response from Eleanor Allitt Handmade beads:Dear Sidney,
We enjoyed a relaxing day, as a group of friends, making unique and beautiful jewellery from egg boxes. Eleanor and her partner were both hospitable and inspirational. Their knowledge of their respective crafts is second to none. Thank you!
A Thoroughly enjoyable day making the bead necklace from eggboxes. With step by step instruction of how to do each stage, the final results were beautiful, all very unique necklaces and earrings! Our tutor Eleanor was very interesting and very hospitable!
In my opinion this course had the WOW factor! do not hesitate to book. I Spent a wonderful day learning a new skill and left feeling so inspired taking home a beautiful necklace and earrings. Eleanor was so attentative and patient, provided clear instructions and help, shared all her tips with us and was generous with her materials. Eleanor’s partner prepared a delicious home made lunch which was a real delight. The day resides in my book of magical experiences!

It’s an amazing course where you start from making your own beads to painting them and creating a beautiful necklace to take home. It’s super interesting and hands on, very satisfying and therapeutic. Eleanor is a wonderful teacher and loves to share her techniques and insights.
I have just returned from a most enjoyable day of bead making. Eleanor was very welcoming and inspirational. I was delighted with the necklace and earrings I made, who would have thought you could make jewellery from egg boxes!
On top of the excellent tuition, Eleanor and her partner provided us with a delicious homemade lunch.
I would highly recommend this course to others.
A really fun day and managed to make two necklaces to take home. Not only that, I feel I have the knowledge to make some more at home. Eleanor is a great teacher and hostess- delicious lunch.
Amazing workshop and some beautiful necklaces. Thankyou
Thankyou so much, very enjoyable and fun, will look for you on Facebook.
Your workshop was excellent - both relaxing and intense. Thanks for sharing your creative skills and time.
Eleanor was an excellent host and so knowledgeable and enthusiastic with the art of making necklaces. I could not believe that I would also be able to make ancient looking beads and make my own necklace. But with Eleanor's guidance I managed to produce a lovely piece of jewellry to be proud of.
An absolutely fabulous workshop. I loved Eleanor's beads when I saw them at Open Studios, and it was amazing to be able to try out techniques and go away with a lovely necklace. Very therapeutic! Thankyou Eleanor
Fantastic step by step processes to create something out of nothing. I have no craft experience whatsoever but this is presented by Eleanor so well that this is something everyone can do. Lots of hidden shortcuts to produce a beautiful handmade bead necklace and bracelet.
I had a very pleasant day doing this workshop. Everything was very well explained and prepared for us. Eleanor gave clear easy instruction and I left feeling confident that I would be able to make these beautiful beads at home. Everything used is easy to get hold of and not expensive. Thoroughly recommend.
A short note to say how much I enjoyed today's workshop. Please book me in for the next one. The Bead making, the soup, the pudding, the laughter, and the fun made it a great day
A really enjoyable day. Eleanor was really focused on ensuring we came away with jewellery we were happy with - she didn't hold back on anything! Thankyou.
Many thanks for a very enjoyable day in your very homely workshop. I am now wearing the necklace I made and I am now inspired to make more. Thank you also for a lovely lunch.
I should like to thank you profusely for the wonderful day you gave us on 13th November. We all had the most fantastic time and felt that we had achieved a fantastic amount. Ann has warn her necklace everyday since and it looks beautiful.
Thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing and well tutored. It is a course most people could continue do at home as the materials are inexpensive. If a course is good the end result reflect this fact and all those on the course made successful necklaces. I would recommend this course to all who enjoy jewellery making.
Lovely paint colours
Good bead selection
Useful to have plenty of examples to look at for inspiration
The method of bead-making was explained clearly with a good demonstration of the technique, and we were able to try bead preparation ourselves. The ingredients used are not expensive or difficult to get hold of, and so I felt that I would be happy to try the technique again in the future. The fun part was the decoration of the beads, which used not just paints but tissue paper. This also was clearly demonstrated, so that despite being a novice in handicrafts I was able to decorate enough beads to a high enough standard that I am happy to wear the resulting necklace. Another benefit of being part of a group was getting inspiration from others and being encouraged to try new and unusual combinations. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
