This two day course is designed to give the student all the fundamental practical skills needed to paint and upcycle furniture to a professional level. This along with the added woodcare knowledge will allow the students to sympathetically restore any piece of furniture whether it’s with paint or naturally.
The student will bring two small or one medium/large piece of furniture to work on which will go through my very own professional process. Acrylic eggshell will be used due to its quick drying times but we will discuss all types of paints in material discussions.
The course covers the following –
Health and Safety
Concept mock up on paper – including colours, design, materials needed
Stripping, neutralising and sanding/woodcare techniques
Stain blocking, priming, knotting and undercoating
Painting, rolling and cutting back techniques
Finishes – waxes, varnishes, stains, oils, polishes
Hardware discussion (student to bring hardware if needed)
Staging and photography
The course is designed for groups of 1 or 2 so to maximise the students learning and for the items of furniture to be finished before the course ends.
If you wanted a bespoke package then we can mix and match to make sure you gain everything you need from the workshop.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
All power tools/hand tools, abrasives, masking, stain blocking and primers, brushes and wood finishes provided. An apron, mask, top coat paint choice and furniture to be provided by the student.

If I could leave more ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️‘S I would!
An amazing course. With Ollie’s patient tuition I managed to learn so much, the outcome being I’ve more confidence in taking on more challenging projects in the future.
Despite the 30+ degree heat the paint finish was beautiful and flat and even without brushstrokes (not something I’ve ever managed before).
An all round great course, I would strongly recommend it to anyone!
Absolutely loved this course. Oliver was a very patient and helpful teacher. I picked up so many tips and it was great to have someone close at hand to answer questions and give advice as we worked. The time went really quickly and I came away feeling much more confident to continue working on further projects. Highly recommended.
Ollie was an excellent teacher, I came away feeling confident I can upcycle furniture to a professional standard.. highly recommended!
I spent two days with Ollie, learning how to restore two pieces of (very tired) furniture, both of which are now enjoying a new lease of life. The work space is amazing, and surprisingly warm for this time of year! The atmosphere is relaxed as Ollie allows you to work at your own pace, whilst ensuring each piece of furniture is completed within the timescale. I decided to enrol on this course as I was interested to learn how to paint my own furniture to a reasonable standard. Well, I couldn't have been more pleased, as the
items I completed on the course surpassed my expectations and the knowledge I have gained will definitely be put to good use. Practice makes perfect and today I bought my next piece that is need of some TLC; bring out the paint brushes! Thanks Ollie.
Ollie is a brilliant tutor - he is an expert in his field and went out of his way to ensure I learnt everything I had set out to. There was a mixture of people there learning for their hobby and people learning professionally.
The venue is in a beautiful part of the world so there was a real sense of escapism.
I will definitely be back for more courses. I highly recommend Ollie. A lovely guy and a brilliant teacher!
Really fantastic couple of days with Ollie. He was super knowledgable and excited to share all he could with me and help me along my way. I brought in a very tired and old looking dressing table that just looks fantastic now, all thanks to Ollie's patience with me and ideas and expertise. The course structure was perfect, allowing me to decide which elements I was more interested in over others. Location and workshop set up were also brilliant. I would highly recommend taking this course, and I'd love to go back and take another course of Ollie's soon.
Wow, what a fantastic course! I got so much out of my two days, more than was on the course brief, essentially down to Ollie's passion and willingness to tailor and tweak the content to my needs and level of expertise.
I learnt so much and have now got a beautifully restored and painted mirror to boot! The learning environment and teaching style were ideal for me - I like to explore and experiment, and just wanted to soak everything up, rather than be restricted to a definitive structure and timings. Ollie gives you the space and freedom, whilst keeping an eye on working towards an outcome, in a skilful and supportive way. It also helped that there were only 2 students, so lots of dedicated attention and time was amazingly refreshing and indulgent! Do the course, you won't regret it.
Oliver has loads of knowledge and was happy to share anything we were after. The class size was small (3 ppl) so we all got time with him individually. As each student did different items we got to listen and learn about other furniture too. He has a high finishing standard and is keen to pass on this work ethic so you end up with a piece of work which is yours, and looks great. The workshop is warm (even thought it is super cold outside) with all tools you need in reach, light and airy - I really liked this 2 day course, I traveled up from London to attend and it was well worth it.
Oliver is such a passionate advocate of his own furniture restoration that it is impossible not to be inspired by the process of adding value to a decrepit piece of furniture that will live on looking lovely and lasting longer. The atmosphere in the bright workshop is energetic and relaxed and Oliver uses the Socratic teaching method to perfection; result is a piece that a novice will feel proud of. Cups of tea are extraordinarily good too. Thank you.
