About the Course
Have fun turning old t-shirts and forgotten favourites into recycled works of art with the age-old skill of rag rugging. In this full day class you will learn all the skills you will need to be able to make unique rag rugs, cushions and art to spice up your home. Careful though, it’s addictive!
In this workshop, which is run at our Ragged Life HQ in Great Wymondley, Hertfordshire, you will have the chance to start either a 100 x 60cm rag rug, rag rug cushion, rag rug wreath or smaller project. In any of our full day classes you will learn:
- How to use the rag rug equipment
- How to work with hessian
- Materials (selecting & preparing)
- How to design for rag rug
- Both rag rugging techniques (loopy & shaggy)
You will be provided with all the materials you need during the class but as the charm of rag rugging is often in the memories attached to old clothes, you're welcome to bring along any of your own clothing you’d like to incorporate, particularly if you have clothing with sentimental value that you'd like to use.
Our rag rug teacher, Elspeth Jackson, is one of the leading rag ruggers in the country. She is one of the expert teachers at the Knitting & Stitching Show, has had a rag rug book, "Rag Rugs, Pillows & More," published on the subject and is a regular in craft magazines - you'll be in very good hands!
This class is suitable for all levels but do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
This class includes everything you need for your rag rug project but we ask that you bring a packed lunch with you. Also included is a free rag rug latch hook to take home with you.
I had such fun! Once you have done this course you can rag rug as Elspeth explains the steps so clearly. She gives you the confidence to have a go. I recommend this course whole heartedly.

I attended Elspeth's course recently, and had a really enjoyable day with her and a small group of other ladies in a beautiful setting. I learned a lot and was greatly inspired by the examples of finished pieces dotted all round us.
Elspeth is lovely, and a very good teacher. We also had fun, and all in all it was a great day. I thoroughly recommend it. I have shown my hotelier in Greece how to do this while on holiday, and she is now hooking away like crazy! Marvellous.

Very informative, relaxed and very friendly. Came away with cushion started in workshop to complete at home. Right amount of time. Would recommend people trying this.

A throughly enjoyable day learning a new addictive craft that can easily be achieved by all. The time just whizzed by listening to Elsbeth explain the technics of cutting fabric and using the tools to achieve our desired projects! A great day and everything you need is supplied. Wonderful hospitality will be had by all who attends this interesting course. Recommend highly.

This was an excellent course: very informative and great fun. It was a good mixture of teaching and practical work and Elspeth was very well prepared. We all went home with enough material to finish our projects and a great deal of food for thought. Talking of food...we were also given some lovely nibbles to keep us going - homemade nougat and fudge! I'd thoroughly recommend the day.
Mary Arthur - - #2964
An excellent course which I attended as a complete beginner. Elspeth explained the techniques well and enabled attendees to rag rug successfully and to go home with enough confidence, and desire, to carry on with our projects. A thoroughly enjoyable day which I wholeheartedly recommend.
