Have fun turning old t-shirts and forgotten favourites into recycled works of art with the age-old skill of rag rugging. In this full day class you will learn all the skills you will need to be able to make unique rag rugs, cushions and art to spice up your home. Careful though, it’s addictive!
In this workshop, which is run at our Ragged Life HQ in Great Wymondley, Hertfordshire, you will have the chance to start either a 100 x 60cm rag rug, rag rug cushion, rag rug wreath or smaller project. In any of our full day classes you will learn:
- How to use the rag rug equipment
- How to work with hessian
- Materials (selecting & preparing)
- How to design for rag rug
- Both rag rugging techniques (loopy & shaggy)
You will be provided with all the materials you need during the class but as the charm of rag rugging is often in the memories attached to old clothes, you're welcome to bring along any of your own clothing you’d like to incorporate, particularly if you have clothing with sentimental value that you'd like to use.
Our rag rug teacher, Elspeth Jackson, is one of the leading rag ruggers in the country. She is one of the expert teachers at the Knitting & Stitching Show, has had a rag rug book, "Rag Rugs, Pillows & More," published on the subject and is a regular in craft magazines - you'll be in very good hands!
This class is suitable for all levels but do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
WHAT COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS WILL BE IN PLACE?
We’re determined to make the rag rug classes as fun and seamless as possible. We will however have some extra precautions in place to make sure everyone stays safe:
- The class will be capped to ensure we observe social distancing
- All the rag rug tools will be disinfected before the workshop and at the end of the workshop.
- Everyone will be asked to disinfect their hands upon arriving at the workshop and leaving.
- Teas, coffees and refreshments will be provided as usual, but we’ll be using single-use compostable cups, or please bring along your own reusable one.
- If you would like to buy any rag rug tools at the end of the workshop, we will only be taking card payments (we have an iZettle card machine).
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
This class includes everything you need for your rag rug project but we ask that you bring a packed lunch with you.
You'll be provided with tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the class.
Also included is a free rag rug latch hook to take home with you.

Fantastic socially distanced rag rugging class, very well thought out, very well presented thank you Elspeth and thank you Elspeth's Mum. X
Response from Ragged Life:Thank you Angela, we're so pleased you enjoyed the workshop. Thank you for being such a willing guinea pig for our first 'al fresco' class.
What a really great day this was at the York workshop on 11 January. It was led by Lorraine who was friendly, good humoured and knowledgeable in equal measure. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone as being great value for money. You'll leave with the information and tools you need to finish the project you started (either a rug, cushion, flowers, bag or whatever) at home. There is also the opportunity to buy other pieces of kit at really reasonable prices if you feel you've totally got the bug (as I did!). There's no pressure to buy. I'm not one for leaving reviews but felt I should as I was so impressed by it all.
What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon, with a small group of interesting people and in such a beautiful setting. This was a completely new craft for me that I'd never tried before. We had great instruction and good company, washed down with lots of teas and coffees.
We were shown precisely how to use the various hooking tools and given thorough guidance in the most efficient way of producing the rag strips for our pieces, then we were well on our way. Elspeth's book is full of inspiration with clear pictures and diagrams, and lovely photos of finished projects. While we worked we were given tips and hints, and our work was inspected which helped us make corrections in the way we worked.
I enjoyed my afternoon so much, I look forward to attending another workshop and perhaps tackling a more ambitious project.
A brilliant half day course with an excellent and friendly tutor. It is amazing how much can be learnt in only a morning when you have a pressure free and relaxed atmosphere. Elspeth has the talents of a good teacher to provide clear instructions and individual help whilst encouraging creativity. She answers all questions with humour and the sincerity of an enthusiast. Thank you for introducing me to a new hobby I hope to enjoy for years.
I’m still smiling 2 days later. This was such a friendly course. Elspeth is a great teacher. She gave attention to everyone and never left slower crafters behind. It’s lovely to come away with all the skills to get rag rugging immediately. I’ve finished a second practice piece and I’ll be starting a cushion shortly. I would highly recommend a Ragged Life course to anyone.
Response from Ragged Life:Thanks so much for your kind words Sarah. You were an absolute pleasure to teach and I can't wait to see your final cushion :) Keep me posted. All the best, Elspeth
Great workshop! Completely relaxed environment with a lovely host. She gave very clear advice/ instructions and made sure we were all happy with what we were doing. Overall, a very positive first workshop experience.
Very pleasant day spent with Elspeth, learning how to rag rug. Enormously satisfying starting our own projects and the first thing I did on returning home was to go in search of old clothes to chop up!
Would thoroughly recommend this Worksop. Yummy cakes made by Kate at MakeCreateCraft too!
This course was great! Elspeth was really patient and taught us step by step how to make the perfect rag rug item! It was a very friendly and relaxing environment and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to pick up a new craft or for just a fun few hours with friends.
Lovely afternoon spent learning this craft, very informative , nice company. Still practising .
Would recommend this to anyone interested. All equipment provided including tea coffee and biscuits.
Great morning learning rag rugging techniques, starting with a small project and then beginning a larger project to build up confidence. I am now busy building on the skills I learnt to finish my cushion cover whilst planning future projects. Elspeth's book is a really helpful reference as well as offering inspiration for future projects. Thank you Elspeth.
What a great way to spend a morning! Great company and expert tutor providing knowledge and encouragement. I had never picked up a latch tool but at the end of three hours I was confident to go home and continue the cushion I started at the course.
Already I have spent two happy evenings in front of the TV working on my cushion and have even roped in my other half to cut up strips of fabric for me. So relaxing for both of us and a craft I look forward to continuing with for many years.
Highly recommend Elspeth and her book for guidance.
I had such fun! Once you have done this course you can rag rug as Elspeth explains the steps so clearly. She gives you the confidence to have a go. I recommend this course whole heartedly.
I had a wonderful time learning about rag rugging. It's so simple to do. Elspeth was a patient teacher and very passionate about crafting.
I finished my Christmas wreath yesterday and now thinking about my next project.
I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn rag rugging.
Had a brilliant time learning all about rag rugging. The course was really well structured with just the right balance of teaching and time for practice. Elspeth was a great teacher, really engaging and well informed.
Had the best time with Elspeth learning Rag Rugging this weekend! She was super thorough and organised and I came out with a great Christmas wreath :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Elspeth was a great teacher and I went away having started a lovely rag rug cushion. I would highly recommend this workshop for anyone looking to learn how to make rag rugs.
Really enjoyed the course and came away inspired to use my new found rag rug making skills! Elspeth was very welcoming and patient explaining the techniques. Would thoroughly recommend this course.
A surprise present for my friend and we loved it! Had a great time with Elspeth learning a new craft. A great teacher and in a super location! Would definitely recommend as an easy craft to pick up and great for doing something with old clothes :-)
Fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed this course, would recommend it to any fellow crafter.
I booked this course as a surprise for my crafty other half and we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The intimate setting allowed 3 to one tuition, plenty of crafty chatter and cake!
This was a delightful morning spent learning a new craft. All the materials were provided, with printed resources to take home for reference or practice. Elspeth had a vast wealth of experience to share with us, and she delivered it with warmth and humour (not to mention cakes and coffee). The small group size meant that we got great individual support....and we found it hard to drag ourselves away. The 'hotline' for assistance is a very generous offer too!
Give it a go........throughly recommended, and good value for money.
My friend and I had a wonderful morning in in Elspeths's warm and welcoming kitchen. Good company, lovely tea and biscuits and a new craft learnt. Elspeth gave us clear and expert tuition in the different kinds of rag rugging and after a short practice provided all the materials needed to create a ragged masterpiece. We all made a good start on our chosen piece and Elspeth was happy to provide help if we hit problems finishing our item at home. thanks a lot for a lovely morning and a new craft.
I can't think of a better way I could have spent that grey, rainy Saturday morning - Elspeth has a great passion for this craft and clearly knows her stuff, she was very generous with her knowledge, tips and advice and also tea, coffee and biscuits! I thought the course was very good value as all materials were included and you could take enough home with you to finish your chosen project. If you think rag rugging could be your thing, this is the best place to start.
As a novice craft worker I was slightly apprehensive about tackling rag rug making. But the moment I was welcomed by Elizabeth and the other students into her lovely home my fears disappeared . The 2.5 hours flew by with precise teaching and gentle guidance , lots of cups of tea and biscuits and good company. We were given a great range of options ,materials and ideas and so began our journey!
A wonderful start to a new hobby .
Myself and a friend attended the beginners workshop on November 14th.
We learnt how to deconstruct clothes to make the right sort of strips for ragging, how to select and prepare different grades of hessian backing, and then tried out two sorts of ragging - the looped kind and the shaggy kind. After that we had a bit of a practice and then had the run of wonderful boxes filled with all sorts of coloured materials to begin to create our own project. The hardest part was trying to decide what to make from a cushion cover, a Christmas wreath, a pot stand or a letter of the alphabet. We were supplied generously with various teas or coffee and biscuits whilst we worked and the atmosphere with a small group was really lovely. The two and a half hours just zipped past and we all left with the materials and knowledge to complete the work at home. Elspeth was a very enthusiastic teacher, very approachable and her home is a lovely place to spend a morning doing crafts. Thank you so much!
I attended Elspeth's course recently, and had a really enjoyable day with her and a small group of other ladies in a beautiful setting. I learned a lot and was greatly inspired by the examples of finished pieces dotted all round us.
Elspeth is lovely, and a very good teacher. We also had fun, and all in all it was a great day. I thoroughly recommend it. I have shown my hotelier in Greece how to do this while on holiday, and she is now hooking away like crazy! Marvellous.
Very informative, relaxed and very friendly. Came away with cushion started in workshop to complete at home. Right amount of time. Would recommend people trying this.
What a great morning I had learning the basics of rag rugging.
Elspeth was friendly and helpful and an extremely good teacher. She explained and demonstrated clearly and carefully the different types of rag rugging. I left, after the morning's course, with a cushion cover started and the confidence to carry on at home.
Elspeth is extremely talented and it was lovely to see some of her work displayed.
A throughly enjoyable day learning a new addictive craft that can easily be achieved by all. The time just whizzed by listening to Elsbeth explain the technics of cutting fabric and using the tools to achieve our desired projects! A great day and everything you need is supplied. Wonderful hospitality will be had by all who attends this interesting course. Recommend highly.
This was an excellent course: very informative and great fun. It was a good mixture of teaching and practical work and Elspeth was very well prepared. We all went home with enough material to finish our projects and a great deal of food for thought. Talking of food...we were also given some lovely nibbles to keep us going - homemade nougat and fudge! I'd thoroughly recommend the day.
Very helpful course for beginners. Great surroundings and company. Instructor has enormous passion and enthusiasm. Great examples and inspiration on how to apply. Would have liked the course to have been longer so that we had more time to apply our learning.
I have just an introductory course on 7/02/2015 at Ragged Life with Elspeth Jackson. She was a great teacher and very inspirational. Can't leave rag rugging alone now as I have all the equipment and knowledge to finish the cushion cover I started at the course and have the hessian and know how to do a rug. What a lovely morning we all had.
A helpful introductory course for complete beginners taught with great passion and enthusiasm for the subject. Too short to really get very far with individual pieces but everyone on my course went away keen to apply their learning .
Very nice course. Everything was perfectly organized and the Elspeth is a very good teacher!
An excellent course which I attended as a complete beginner. Elspeth explained the techniques well and enabled attendees to rag rug successfully and to go home with enough confidence, and desire, to carry on with our projects. A thoroughly enjoyable day which I wholeheartedly recommend.
Thoroughly enjoyed this class for the second time - Elspeth is an excellent tutor with oodles of patience and lots of creative and sensible suggestions. Fab location, excellent pace and length of class, all equipment provided and something tangible to show for it and confidence to complete the projects not quite finished in the time.
Would heartily recommend - next stop rag rug Christmas wreaths!
I had such fun on this course! As someone who struggles with most 'arty' endeavours, I found Elspeth's tutorial friendly, easy to follow and very accessible. All equipment was provided and we came away with all the knowledge necessary to finish our designs and feel confident in starting our own rag rug projects. It was a very sociable, relaxed atmosphere and there were plenty of bright and beautiful examples of Elspeth's completed rag rugs on show, which was inspiring.
I would thoroughly recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn a lovely new craft and have lots of fun doing it!
Enjoyed learning a new skill and the cost was very reasonable.
I really enjoyed this course. It was a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and we learned exactly what we had set out to do. Elspeth described the two methods of rag rugging - shaggy or the flatter one and talked about other ways with the proddy. She provided cushion size hessian and hook to take away or a frame and smaller piece of hessian if you chose to do the little picture and she provided scissors and lots of cut fabrics to use on the evening. We could take any fabric we were using to keep with the design and she suggested ways of keeping the design varied . We started a project which was easy to finish and gave lots of ideas. 2.5 hours is a good length of time to get started. When I told friends they were very5 interested, as it's not a common craft to learn about.
