Hello, we hope you are all well and safe.
We are delighted to announce we will be back up and running in the summer after the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions have been lifted and hope you will find our workshops a welcome delight after the very difficult times we have all had.
Come along to one of our 'one' day (10am to 3pm) fun and friendly Furniture Painting Workshops at the gorgeous Grappenhall Heyes Walled Garden, Warrington, Cheshire. Spend the day in the bright and airy schoolroom and glass house whilst looking out onto the spectacular gardens. On sunny days, we can get outside to paint!
Learn how to upcycle, refresh, modernise and skilfully transform a piece of your tired and dated furniture whilst making some new like minded friends in a relaxed, supportive and beautiful environment.
Leave with the skills and inspiration to continue further projects at home. A small group of no more than 6, therefore you will receive one to one instruction for much of the time.
You will bring a small piece of furniture which you'd like to freshen up and transform into a beautiful, elegant piece to match your home decor.
During the first section of the workshop I will teach you about the paint, brushes, tools and wood preparation. You will also learn a variety of painting and effects techniques incl. painting, crackling, dry brushing, distressing, two colour, stencilling, waxing and finishing/protecting the paint when you will be able to experiment with different paints, colours, brushes and techniques on a practice board (provided and which you will be able to take home). I will guide you through each stage and discuss in detail how and when to use each technique.
You will then try out your newly learned skills during the second part of the day when you will paint and transform your own piece of furniture.
I will be there every step of the way to guide you and to provide advice and ideas for a creative result. With such a small group, there is plenty of time for one to one discussion. Full workshop notes on techniques, paints, products and where to buy will be provided.
If you have any questions in advance of booking your place please select 'chat with the maker,' if you would like to proceed to booking your place please select 'see available dates.'
I look forward to meeting you and to spending an enjoyable and creative day with you!
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All tools, paints and and materials are provided and are included in the price.
The price also includes lovely homemade cakes, cream scones, biscuits, tea and coffee throughout the day. Lunch is not included in the price, however a delicious afternoon tea or lunch can be enjoyed in the gorgeous adjoining glass house Ape Bars Cafe overlooking the amazing gardens (please let me know if you would like lunch in the cafe as I will need to book you in at the moment), or please feel free to bring some lunch with you which can be eaten in the workshop or in the beautiful gardens.
Parking is available free of charge within the Walled Garden just outside the School Room (I will provide a map and directions).
Please come in comfortable clothing and ideally an apron (not essential). Also comfortable shoes.

1 day (10:00am to 3:00pm)
I attended the 1 day furniture painting workshop for beginners yesterday at the lovely Grappenhall Heys Gardens in Warrington. It was a very enjoyable, relaxed and informal day. First class tuition from Jo who took us through several paint techniques step by step. Jo kept us topped up with refreshments and delicious cakes & scones baked by her mum and auntie.
I painted and waxed a small side table using the air brushing and ageing technique and I was well chuffed with the final finish resulting in my table now being promoted from garage to dining room.
All materials were supplied by Jo with a huge choice of colours. I would highly recommend the workshop and I’m ok considering booking the upholstery course she runs in the future.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your lovely kind words Wendy. I’m delighted you enjoyed the workshop and cakes! Mum and Aunty are delighted. 😊 Hope to see you next year.
A great course! Jo takes you through a range of techniques and gives you the confidence to experiment on your own piece of furniture. She is knowledgeable,
patient and inspiring. Lovely to take home a transformed piece of furniture at the end of the course. Looking forward to doing level 2 next year!
Response from The Boho Shed:I’m so pleased you enjoyed the workshop Luise. I look forward to seeing you again next year.
I attended Jo's Painting Furniture workshop in Grapenhall and wasn't sure what to expect as it was a gift from my husband and I hadn't done anything like it before.
Jo did a great job of putting me at ease, taking the time to explain lots of different techniques before we got to put them into practice.
The workshop was lovely and relaxed and after practicing some of the techniques, we got to paint our own piece of furniture from home. There were lots of handy tips, and I feel like a gained the confidence and inspiration to paint some more pieces (and we got to enjoy some lovely cakes and scones too).
Response from The Boho Shed:I’m delighted you enjoyed the workshop Rachael. You made a lovely job of your table. Thanks for your lovely comments.
Attended the furniture painting and upcycling workshop a few days ago and it was excellent! The workshop was a perfect size, really chilled and informal and the location was perfect, surrounded by beautiful gardens and a fab little café. Jo was an excellent trainer and I picked up some great prepping and painting techniques and advice around the best paints and brushes to purchase. Will definitely be attending more of Jo's sessions! X
Response from The Boho Shed:So pleased you enjoyed the workshop Christina. It was a pleasure for me and your little chair looked really gorgeous. I look forward to seeing you again soon. X
Great course for anyone wanting to enhance or reminder of techniques, or like me start from the beginning not having tried it before. Great tips on which paints work better with the different techniques. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere in a great location. I will definitely be going to more of Jo's courses!
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks for your lovely review Lesley. You did such a great job of your furniture particularly it was your first time. I look forward to seeing you again.
I had an amazing time both learning new techniques and brushing up (pardon the pun) on previously taught skills. This was my second experience of the level 1 course, and I was delighted to realise how much more I learnt. The entire day was so much fun, led by an extremely accomplished artist who was so generous in sharing her vast knowledge and experience. Joanne purposed to divide her time between all 8 of us so brilliantly, guiding and advising with ideas personal to each person, and perfectly appropriate to each piece. We all had a fabulous time of bonding throughout the day as we practised the various exercises. We all came away with a greater understanding of approaching furniture restoration, along with transferable skills for future endeavours. We also came away with a finished product that, to my mind, were of a very high standard. I can highly recommend Joanne’s workshops. You will never see a piece of furniture in the same light. A joy!!
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your really lovely words Michelle. You are doing such a fantastic job of all your painting projects. You're very talented and creative. Your biscuits were delicious btw! Thank you!
A lovely day, I learned a lot and met some great people too. Would definitely recommend this course.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your recommendation Suzanne. Your mirror looked delightful at the end of the day. I had a lovely day with you all too. Hope to see you again.
What a lovely day
Very interesting and interactive, every minute used to the max.
Learned such a lot and came away with a great sense of achievement.
Lovely place with great facilities.
Very well done Jo.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you Carolyn. You did so well with your unit. I hope your fish enjoy their new home. It was lovely to spend the day with you.
Jo was a fantastic teacher. I went having no experience of doing any furniture painting to creating two beautiful picture frames and feeling truly inspired.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks for your recommendation Anna. I'm so pleased you left feeling inspired and hope you manage to continue at home. Hope to see you again.
I was given this course as a birthday present from my daughter. This course did not appeal to me but went with a very small table (just about to be thrown into a tip) not knowing what to expect! The day was spent with a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructor, Joanne.
At the end of the day I came away having transformed my small table and learnt a great deal about all types and methods of transforming items of furniture.
There were 8 of us all with different items and all took a marvellous turnaround in appearance. Changed my mind - would recommend this course especially to people who think they cannot do this.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your lovely review Val. I am so delighted you enjoyed the day and got so much out of it having arrived feeling quite cynical about the workshop. You did amazingly well with your table and I hope your daughter loved it too.
Today I had the privilege to attend Jo’s Boho Shed studio and learn how to paint a piece of furniture. My best friend bought me this experience as a surprise and it did not disappoint. I had a dark wood table that looked very unloved and with Jo’s great knowledge, passion for her craft and Enthusiastic enthusiasm for us to enjoy learning a new skill, I produced an amazing rejuvenated piece of furniture in Swanky Pants colour edged in distressed silver. Highly recommended and thank you Jo xx
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm delighted you enjoyed the workshop Sharon and that it was a good surprise! Lovely of your friend to do that for you. Thank you for your kind words. x
I have just spent a wonderful day learning loads of excellent furniture painting techniques. There were only a few in the class so Jo was able to support us all really well. Jo is obviously a very knowledgeable & experienced teacher.
I arrived with a very boring and highly polished dark wood nest of tables & left with a beautiful & classy navy & grey table, looking forward to painting the other 2. Already planning my next day with Jo, but what to choose - upholstered footstool or intermediate painting techniques 🤔 . Great day, thanks Jo xxx
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much Sal. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the workshop, you did a really great job on your tables. I look forward to seeing you soon on the next one. :-)
Just had a brilliant day with Jo who was wonderful and informative. Even though I am not creative, this allowed me to try out different techniques which I will be able to use. Jo spent time with everyone discussing ideas for our chosen piece of furniture. I am looking forward to booking on another course in the future.
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm delighted you enjoyed the day, thank you for your lovely review. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Had a brilliant day learning new skills which I can't wait to try out on other pieces of furniture that desperately need to be rejuvenated!
The instructor was very informative, and with guidance and advice along the way, I finished up with a brand new contemporary paper rack. Thank you so much!
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm so pleased you enjoyed the day Helen, you did a great job on your paper rack. I look forward to seeing your future creations. Thanks for your lovely words.
Having attended the Level 1 Furniture painting course earlier in the year & thoroughly enjoyed it, I was keen to get booked on the Level 2. Jo is extremely knowledgeable, patient and makes the whole day great fun. I would highly recommend attending Jo’s workshops & will be returning for the footstool upholstery workshop in the new year.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your lovely words Jane, I'm so pleased you got as much out of the level 2 painting course and I look forward to seeing you for some upholstering in 2020! :-)
I completed the one day furniture painting workshop for beginners on 7th June. It was an excellent day. First class tuition from Jo who took us through several paint techniques step by step. I painted a small side table using the crackle glaze technique, some stencilling and air brushing. I was really impressed with the final result. All materials supplied with a huge choice of colours. I would highly recommend the workshop. Far better than a previous workshop I had attended.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your kind words Heather. Your did an amazing job on your table. keep up the good work.
Had a great day with Jo on this workshop. Jo gave us the chance to practice some painting techniques with lots of help and guidance. We then set about painting our own piece of furniture. I feel confident now to have a go at painting more items in my home. A fun day. Thanks Jo
Response from The Boho Shed:Wonderful news!! My job is done - for you to leave with the knowledge and confidence to continue with your own projects at home. Don't forget to show me your creativity. :-)
I would recommend this course as a fun an informative way to learn various painting techniques. Jo is very helpful and knowledgeable, and the group of other ladies on the course were friendly and supportive. I’m looking forward to doing the next level.
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm so pleased you and your lovely Mum enjoyed the day Clare, it was great for me too. A lovely group and soooooo creative. I look forward to seeing you again on the level 2 workshop.
Just had a fab and fun day at the furniture painting course on 7 June in Grappenhall. Jo is an excellent teacher and very approachable. We learnt lots of new techniques which I can try at home before going on the level 2 course later in the year. It was a great venue, great crowd, great fun and great value.
I would recommend this course and Jo to anyone.
I'm also looking forward to the upholstery course which I have booked for this summer.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks so much Liz. That's so kind of you. I look forward to seeing you in August for another fun and creative day.
I had the best time, learnt loads of techniques and felt confident enough to try out my new skills on furniture at home by tge end of the workshop. Jo was so friendly and patient.
Response from The Boho Shed:Ah, thank you Vanda, I had such a great day with you all and I'm so pleased you learned so much. I love that little jewellery box, you did such a great job! I have received your message and will book you onto the advanced workshop now.
I attended Jo's paint workshop on Friday with my mum. It was excellent day out, good value for money and very informative. We learnt how to create a distressed look, stencil, how to create the crackling look. Jo was extremely friendly, patient, helpful and full of wonderful ideas as we had the opportunity during the course to create an effect on an item of our choice. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Jo's workshops and I will definitely be attending one very soon. xx
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks for your lovely words Julie. I'm delighted you and your Mum enjoyed the day. My Mum and Aunty are tickled pink you enjoyed their homemade cakes and scones! And I am so very pleased you have been inspired to keep your old furniture and make it beautiful following the workshop. See you at the next one.
I attended Jo’s workshop in February and was very impressed. Jo is very knowledgable and patient and taught us lots of amazing techniques. An old childhood bookcase became a very modern and refreshed piece of furniture thanks to Jo’s advice and guidance. The cakes were yummy too. Highly recommended the Boho Shes and Jo. Can’t wait for level 2.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your lovely words Jane. It's so great to receive such positive feedback. Your bookcase looked gorgeous and I'm delighted you enjoyed the day...and the cakes! :-)
Great workshop attended in February, learnt some great techniques. If you are looking to upcycle any old furniture I would highly recommend on Thebohoshed courses. Thanks Jo looking forward to the next one.
