Hello, we hope you are all well and safe.
We are delighted to announce we are now back up and running and hope you will find our workshops a welcome delight after the very difficult times we have all had.
Come along to one of our 'one' day (10am to 3pm) fun and friendly Furniture Painting Workshops in the picturesque village of Billinge, on the outskirts of Wigan.
Learn how to upcycle, refresh, modernise and skilfully transform a piece of your tired and dated furniture whilst making some new like minded friends in a relaxed, supportive and lovely environment.
Leave with the skills and inspiration to continue further projects at home. A small group of no more than 6, therefore you will receive one to one instruction for much of the time.
You will bring a small piece of furniture which you'd like to freshen up and transform into a beautiful, elegant piece to match your home decor.
During the first section of the workshop I will teach you about the paint, brushes, tools and wood preparation. You will also learn a variety of painting and effects techniques incl. painting, crackling, dry brushing, distressing, two colour, stencilling, waxing and finishing/protecting the paint when you will be able to experiment with different paints, colours, brushes and techniques on a techniques board (provided and which you will be able to take home). I will guide you through each stage and discuss in detail how and when to use each technique.
You will then try out your newly learned skills during the second part of the day when you will paint and transform your piece of furniture.
I will be there every step of the way to guide you and to provide advice and ideas for a creative result. With such a small group, there is plenty of time for one to one discussion. Full workshop notes on techniques, paints, products and where to buy will be provided.
N.B. Please note Billinge is a new venue for us, and the reviews mentioned for this course refer to exactly the same course previously (and currently also) held at Cuerden View Cafe in Preston.
If you have any questions in advance of booking your place please select 'chat with the maker,' if you would like to proceed to booking your place please select 'see available dates.'
I look forward to meeting you and to spending an enjoyable and creative day with you!
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All tools, paints and and materials are provided and are included in the price.
The price also includes lovely homemade cakes, cream scones, biscuits, tea and coffee throughout the day. Lunch is not included in the price so please bring some lunch with you.
Parking is available free of charge at the venue.
Please come in comfortable clothing and ideally an apron (not essential). Also comfortable shoes.
We are extremely proud of the lovely reviews we have received from people attending previous workshops. Please take a look in The Boho Shed review section.
Should you choose to join us on this workshop, I look forward to meeting you and sharing a lovely and creative day with you.
Our lovely chalk paint will be available for you to buy from the workshop or online should you wish to continue with other exciting projects at home.
This is the Level 1 Furniture Painting Workshop for beginners/intermediates We also run Upholstery Workshops for those of you who would like to learn some all-round skills. Please see our other 'The Boho Shed' course listings here on the Craft Courses site.

Thoroughly enjoyed Jo’s furniture painting workshop at the Boho Shed. Spent a lovely relaxing day learning a new skill in a beautiful location with friendly people. Thanks Jo. Hope to return soon for the upholstery workshop.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your lovely review Deb. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it, our first in Billinge. I love it that you went all out and experimented with a few different techniques on your lovely frames. I look forward to seeing you again at one of the upholstery workshops. x
I had a brilliant day today amongst some lovely like minded people! Jo’s workshop is excellent. She explains techniques really well and is so helpful with answering questions and demonstrates them individually as well as to the whole group. I managed to transform a dated old side table into something unique and pretty! The added bonus was the delicious cakes and tranquil setting.
I would highly recommend this workshop 😀
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so very much for your kind review Annette. I sincerely enjoyed our day together. You were a pleasure to teach and made such a fantastic job of your little table. Glad you enjoyed the cakes too! I’ll pass on your comments to the bakers aka Mum and Aunty. 🙏💕
Had a great day on the furniture workshop and learnt many things which I can’t wait to put into practice.
The afternoon tea provided was also delicious.
Highly recommend this course and Jo was very informative and helpful.

Just wanted to say I had such a lovely day today. Never felt so relaxed for a long time.
& loved the sunshine touch lol! Xx
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your lovely review Sarah. I'm so pleased you had a lovely day. For those reading this, Sarah has given me a new name for 'dry brushing' - the 'sunshine touch' cos she loved the technique so much, and so do I! :-)
Lovely welcoming reception v informative day thoroughly enjoyed
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your kind words Ruth. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the workshop. X
Had a really enjoyable day in the shed and Jo was excellent - good level of information given and then we were let loose to work on our projects with Jo on hand to help and make suggestions along the way. I had a brilliant day and was delighted with the results of my project - the outcome was better than I had dared to hope for. Would have no hesitation in recommending this course to anyone starting out on furniture painting - it gives a really good base of knowledge and understanding. The homemade bakes were a bonus too! Many thanks Jo for a brilliant day.
Response from The Boho Shed:Wow! Thank you so much for your lovely words Jane. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the day. You did a lovely job of your furniture. Happy painting at home! :-)
I attended the 1 day furniture painting workshop for beginners yesterday at the lovely Grappenhall Heys Gardens in Warrington. It was a very enjoyable, relaxed and informal day. First class tuition from Jo who took us through several paint techniques step by step. Jo kept us topped up with refreshments and delicious cakes & scones baked by her mum and auntie.
I painted and waxed a small side table using the air brushing and ageing technique and I was well chuffed with the final finish resulting in my table now being promoted from garage to dining room.
All materials were supplied by Jo with a huge choice of colours. I would highly recommend the workshop and I’m ok considering booking the upholstery course she runs in the future.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your lovely kind words Wendy. I’m delighted you enjoyed the workshop and cakes! Mum and Aunty are delighted. 😊 Hope to see you next year.
A great course! Jo takes you through a range of techniques and gives you the confidence to experiment on your own piece of furniture. She is knowledgeable,
patient and inspiring. Lovely to take home a transformed piece of furniture at the end of the course. Looking forward to doing level 2 next year!
Response from The Boho Shed:I’m so pleased you enjoyed the workshop Luise. I look forward to seeing you again next year.
I attended Jo's Painting Furniture workshop in Grapenhall and wasn't sure what to expect as it was a gift from my husband and I hadn't done anything like it before.
Jo did a great job of putting me at ease, taking the time to explain lots of different techniques before we got to put them into practice.
The workshop was lovely and relaxed and after practicing some of the techniques, we got to paint our own piece of furniture from home. There were lots of handy tips, and I feel like a gained the confidence and inspiration to paint some more pieces (and we got to enjoy some lovely cakes and scones too).
Response from The Boho Shed:I’m delighted you enjoyed the workshop Rachael. You made a lovely job of your table. Thanks for your lovely comments.
Attended the furniture painting and upcycling workshop a few days ago and it was excellent! The workshop was a perfect size, really chilled and informal and the location was perfect, surrounded by beautiful gardens and a fab little café. Jo was an excellent trainer and I picked up some great prepping and painting techniques and advice around the best paints and brushes to purchase. Will definitely be attending more of Jo's sessions! X
Response from The Boho Shed:So pleased you enjoyed the workshop Christina. It was a pleasure for me and your little chair looked really gorgeous. I look forward to seeing you again soon. X
The furniture painting workshop at Cuerden Valley yesterday was really enjoyable and very informative. Jo allowed all participants to ask questions as we were learning new techniques and was very supportive and encouraging as we worked on our individual pieces. We all came away inspired and more confident to try out new techniques. Thanks Jo!
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your lovely review Lesley. I’m delighted you enjoyed the day and feel inspired to try some more new techniques. Happy Painting.
Great course for anyone wanting to enhance or reminder of techniques, or like me start from the beginning not having tried it before. Great tips on which paints work better with the different techniques. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere in a great location. I will definitely be going to more of Jo's courses!
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks for your lovely review Lesley. You did such a great job of your furniture particularly it was your first time. I look forward to seeing you again.
I had an amazing time both learning new techniques and brushing up (pardon the pun) on previously taught skills. This was my second experience of the level 1 course, and I was delighted to realise how much more I learnt. The entire day was so much fun, led by an extremely accomplished artist who was so generous in sharing her vast knowledge and experience. Joanne purposed to divide her time between all 8 of us so brilliantly, guiding and advising with ideas personal to each person, and perfectly appropriate to each piece. We all had a fabulous time of bonding throughout the day as we practised the various exercises. We all came away with a greater understanding of approaching furniture restoration, along with transferable skills for future endeavours. We also came away with a finished product that, to my mind, were of a very high standard. I can highly recommend Joanne’s workshops. You will never see a piece of furniture in the same light. A joy!!
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your really lovely words Michelle. You are doing such a fantastic job of all your painting projects. You're very talented and creative. Your biscuits were delicious btw! Thank you!
I recently attended the beginners furniture painting course and I absolutely loved it! The woman who runs it, Jo, was very warm and welcoming and she did an amazing job with showing us all some great basic techniques with which to apply to the pieces of furniture we brought! You can really tell that she puts so much effort and love into what she does and its obvious in the advice she gave me when it came to painting. She made me feel like my piece wasn't just a work she thought would be good and was very keen to work around what we each like in terms of colour, style and texture! And that's just talking about the course!
The venue itself is a beautiful little gem of a cafe - easily the nicest I've ever been to - where everything from the aesthetics to the staff to the variety and quality of the food and drinks provided is truly top notch!
I imagine this review probably sounds kinda cheesy but it's only because of how much I enjoyed the day! To anyone who wants to paint up that old table in the shed or want to spruce up a picture frame, you would be mad to not give it a go!
Response from The Boho Shed:What a really lovely review Beth, thank you so much. I really enjoyed working with you in helping you to develop your skills and go home with a gorgeous piece of transformed furniture. You did a fantastic job!
I would like to thank Jo for a brilliant introduction to furniture painting, I'm not very good at arty things but thought I would give this course a try and see what I could produce. We were provided with written, verbal and practical instruction and Jo was very supportive and helpful at all times. And so, we set about using our new learned techniques to transform our tired old pieces of furniture into some lovely items.
The course is held in a large and comfortable room near the cafe where we ate a wonderful afternoon tea. I would recommend this course to anyone who is curious/interested in furniture painting and I am certainly going to try my hand at painting some furniture at home.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your wonderful review Joyce. It was great that you were part of the day! I am so pleased you will try out your newly learned techniques at home. Please let me see what you produce.
A lovely day, I learned a lot and met some great people too. Would definitely recommend this course.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your recommendation Suzanne. Your mirror looked delightful at the end of the day. I had a lovely day with you all too. Hope to see you again.
What a lovely day
Very interesting and interactive, every minute used to the max.
Learned such a lot and came away with a great sense of achievement.
Lovely place with great facilities.
Very well done Jo.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you Carolyn. You did so well with your unit. I hope your fish enjoy their new home. It was lovely to spend the day with you.
I was given this course as a birthday present from my daughter. This course did not appeal to me but went with a very small table (just about to be thrown into a tip) not knowing what to expect! The day was spent with a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructor, Joanne.
At the end of the day I came away having transformed my small table and learnt a great deal about all types and methods of transforming items of furniture.
There were 8 of us all with different items and all took a marvellous turnaround in appearance. Changed my mind - would recommend this course especially to people who think they cannot do this.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your lovely review Val. I am so delighted you enjoyed the day and got so much out of it having arrived feeling quite cynical about the workshop. You did amazingly well with your table and I hope your daughter loved it too.
Jo was a fantastic teacher. I went having no experience of doing any furniture painting to creating two beautiful picture frames and feeling truly inspired.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks for your recommendation Anna. I'm so pleased you left feeling inspired and hope you manage to continue at home. Hope to see you again.
Excellent day! This course is well organized, Jo is always there to help and her instruction are easy to follow. There is plenty of material to choose from at every step of creating your personal piece of art or joy. I loved the fact that these skill are so easily transferable to other materials or projects too.
Great course, excellent company and skills as well as memories or gifts to go home with! What more can you wish for!?
A big "Thank you" to the cafe for the amazing food!
Thank you, Jo!
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your lovely words Ines. It was a pleasure to have you be part of a great day and I'm delighted you are pleased with your creations. I agree, as usual, the cafe did an amazing job of providing a delicious afternoon tea!
What a lovely day! Jo guided us through making the Christmas bottle and Christmas plaque with patience and expertise. I was delighted with the things I made. To be able to make such an effective keepsake or decoration in one day was wonderful. Thank you for the yummy cakes along the way and thank you to all at Cuerden Cafe for a fantastic afternoon tea. The location couldn't have been better. I would definitely come back for more courses like this with Jo at the helm!
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm so pleased you enjoyed the workshop Sarah, especially on your birthday! Thanks for being part of a really great Christmassy day. Hope to see you again soon.
Today I had the privilege to attend Jo’s Boho Shed studio and learn how to paint a piece of furniture. My best friend bought me this experience as a surprise and it did not disappoint. I had a dark wood table that looked very unloved and with Jo’s great knowledge, passion for her craft and Enthusiastic enthusiasm for us to enjoy learning a new skill, I produced an amazing rejuvenated piece of furniture in Swanky Pants colour edged in distressed silver. Highly recommended and thank you Jo xx
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm delighted you enjoyed the workshop Sharon and that it was a good surprise! Lovely of your friend to do that for you. Thank you for your kind words. x
I have just spent a wonderful day learning loads of excellent furniture painting techniques. There were only a few in the class so Jo was able to support us all really well. Jo is obviously a very knowledgeable & experienced teacher.
I arrived with a very boring and highly polished dark wood nest of tables & left with a beautiful & classy navy & grey table, looking forward to painting the other 2. Already planning my next day with Jo, but what to choose - upholstered footstool or intermediate painting techniques 🤔 . Great day, thanks Jo xxx
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much Sal. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the workshop, you did a really great job on your tables. I look forward to seeing you soon on the next one. :-)
Just had a brilliant day with Jo who was wonderful and informative. Even though I am not creative, this allowed me to try out different techniques which I will be able to use. Jo spent time with everyone discussing ideas for our chosen piece of furniture. I am looking forward to booking on another course in the future.
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm delighted you enjoyed the day, thank you for your lovely review. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Had a brilliant day learning new skills which I can't wait to try out on other pieces of furniture that desperately need to be rejuvenated!
The instructor was very informative, and with guidance and advice along the way, I finished up with a brand new contemporary paper rack. Thank you so much!
Response from The Boho Shed:I'm so pleased you enjoyed the day Helen, you did a great job on your paper rack. I look forward to seeing your future creations. Thanks for your lovely words.
Having attended the Level 1 Furniture painting course earlier in the year & thoroughly enjoyed it, I was keen to get booked on the Level 2. Jo is extremely knowledgeable, patient and makes the whole day great fun. I would highly recommend attending Jo’s workshops & will be returning for the footstool upholstery workshop in the new year.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your lovely words Jane, I'm so pleased you got as much out of the level 2 painting course and I look forward to seeing you for some upholstering in 2020! :-)
I attended this course sept 14th. Jo is absolutely delightful. She is well informed, patient and encouraging! The choice of kit that she provides is amazing. This is my second course with Jo and I’m looking to attend my third soon! The venue is brilliant and the lunch/afternoon tea is delicious. Highly recommended. Thanks Jo.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so very much Julie. It was a delight to spend the day with such a lovely group of girls. I agree, Cuerden View Cafe is a perfect venue and all credit to the staff and chefs for consistently providing an excellent and friendly service and afternoon tea.
What a fab day, this is my second course with the Boho Shed at Cuerden Valley and already planning my next one. The course was informative and fun in an informal atmosphere. The techniques we have learned and all the expert tips will enable me to use them on projects at home. Thanks again Jo for a lovely day. PS. The afternoon tea (lunch) provided, sets you up for the afternoon.
Response from The Boho Shed:It was great to see you again Jan and I'm delighted you enjoyed your second workshop as much as the first. Credit to Cuerden View Cafe and staff for providing a beautiful environment and delicious afternoon tea! See you again soon. :-)
I have just attended Level 2 furniture painting workshop and had another amazing day learning new techniques to add to my Level 1 skills. In level 1 I learned one colour distressed look, two colour distress with waxing, two colours with crackled effect (my fave) and stencilling and dry brushing. If that's not enough I'm now adding glazing, raised stencilling, image transfer, decoupage (amazing technique) blending, dry brushing and metallic foiling.
Can't believe how much I have learned, and again Jo you are an amazing teacher and so passionate and patient. I would recommend these two courses, you will love them.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your kind words Julie, but it takes two to tango :-) You did a lovely job on both workshops. Hope to see you again soon.
Another great day learning new craft skills from Joanne. Level 2 was brilliant, as was level 1. My shed is now cleared waiting to be painted and have my electrics re-connected. Can't wait to get started on my own projects!

I attended the furniture painting workshop today Level 1, thank you Jo for another fab day. I loved the upholstery footstool workshop so much I wanted to learn more skills and thats what I did today. I was looking forward to this course and it was more than I expected it to be. I have learned some amazing techniques that I will use on some pieces of furniture I have at home to upcycle. Jo, I keep looking at my chair and thinking wow I did that! Thank you again for all your patience, knowledge and the skills you taught us today and your encouragement to step out of my comfort zone! I met a lovely couple today, so nice meeting like minded people. Can't wait for Level 2 Jo, and the handouts are spot on and a great help in knowing what to buy. I would highly recommend the workshops.
Response from The Boho Shed:It was really great to see you again after the upholstery workshop Julie. I'm absolutely delighted you enjoyed the painting as much. It's such a compliment to have lovely people return for more learning with me. You helped to make it a wonderful day! See you at Level 2 :-)
Myself and my friend have always fancied upcycling furniture but have never been brave enough to have a go so we decided to go on a course to see what it was all about and I'm glad we did.
Jo is a fantastic teacher, very good at explaining things and with it being a maximum of 6 people per class she had time to come round and give advice and help to everyone individually.
The afternoon tea was to die for and it was lovely to sit and each lunch in such beautiful surroundings'
I would recommend any of Jo's courses - we will be attending many more in the coming months
Now - where's my paint...

Lovely relaxed but informative workshop with the delightful Joanne who goes out of her way to help individuals as well as supplying lots of general information on how to get the best effects. The location for this workshop is ideal, comfortable and set in a lovely park and the lunch was plentiful and delicious. All in all a really wonderful way to spend a day.
