About the Course
Tapestry weaving is a colourful and tactile method of creating a beautiful and unique textiles. It is a weft based weaving technique which can be used to create pictures varying from realistic, representational designs, to minimal and abstract pieces.
During this course you will explore the structure of weaving, which is essentially a grid; a vertical warp stretched over a simple frame with coloured weft woven horizontally. You will also learn how to break free of the grid! The many ways in which the weft yarns are joined to build the surface fabric constitutes the fascinating potential of this wonderful craft.
You will learn to make textures through knotting, weft wrapping, and whipping, to add interest and three dimensionality to the weaving. Curiosity and exploration and experimentation is encouraged!
Each week will examine different aspects of colour mixing and how to blend yarns to make an expressive weft. You will experiment with various visual effects to build a picture. By the end of the course you will have created a personal ‘weaving vocabulary’ to share and inspire.
