About the Course
Have you ever wanted to learn how to create your own handwoven fabric?
Set within a relaxed home studio in the Surrey countryside, this beginner’s workshop will allow you to try weaving various weave structures on a pre-warped 4 shaft Table Loom and give you the basics of how fabric is constructed. You will be able to choose from a variety of yarns to design and weave your very own piece of fabric which you can take home.
With only two Table Looms running per session, it allows hands on help and freedom to ask as many questions as you like!
Ideal for complete beginners or those wanting a refresher in weaving.
The first part of the session will go through the weaving process, tell you how the loom has been set up and an explanation given of different structures you can try during the session
The second part is where you will be able to start weaving, exploring yarns and structures.
The third part is when you will be able to weave one larger sample.

Had a lovely evening with a friend weaving a sample and trying our hands. It was very relaxing and Rebecca was a patient and charming teacher. Thoroughly recommended.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my lovely morning with you this morning, probably only scratching the surface of what there is to learn yet, but very definitely, very happy to have done it! Thank you so much, and can’t wait for the next stage!
Isabel Gill - - #22960
A lovely morning spent with Rebecca! Great tuition and help as soon as you needed it, we’re rather chuffed with our fabric samples and have shown them off to anyone who’ll listen! Saving for a loom of our own has begun... we’ll be back to learn how to set it up
Hazel Knight - - #22715
I absolutely loved this introduction to loom weaving (a birthday 🎁 from a friend, who joined me for the session a couple of weekends ago).
Rebecca had already set the loom up and my sample piece was great - can’t believe we were each able to produce a usable piece of cloth in such a short session, playing about with all six weave structures. Today I tackled the wet finish process. Thank you Rebecca!
Sue Waddell - - #22329
I received my weaving workshop as a Christmas present from my husband. It only took a few hints for him to get the idea! I'd seen Rebecca at Farnham Maltings and her enthusiasm for weaving fired my curiosity. I wasn't disappointed! I spent a delightful morning learning to weave at Rebecca's studio. I'm very happy with the fabric I created and plan to make it into a unique makeup bag as soon as time permits!
Pam - - #21797
I was the lucky recipient of a Dobby and Rose Weaving gift voucher. The workshop was everything it promised to be and more - very relaxing and therapeutic but also exciting to learn a new skill and see the colours and textures develop on the loom. Rebecca is a fantastic tutor and very encouraging; I came away with a sample of my work, a great sense of achievement and a desire to learn more. I highly recommend the workshop - and it is a fabulous present!
Margaret Popplewell - - #21786
We first met Rebecca at Farnham Maltings, displaying her wonderful wares. I subsequently ordered a beautiful lampshade for my daughter’s Christmas present. This was personally delivered by Rebecca, who was concerned about the reliability of the post. Thank you! My daughter and I then spent an interesting morning with Rebecca, which flew past, learning to weave on an 8 saddle loom. We had only woven on simple looms before, so were excited to produce some great patterns, the diagonal being my favourite. As the looms were already warped up, after some instruction, we could move onto weaving our samples. Of course, we are now eager to learn how to warp up the loom. Another workshop seems to be on the cards or perhaps the purchase of a Louet! Thank you Rebecca for inspiring us!
Bev Williams - - #21421
Rebecca is an amazing teacher and the beginners course at Dobby and Rose is a great introduction to weaving. Rebecca's easy way of teaching makes the overwhelming first introduction to a loom feel like a walk in the park. Always at the ready to answer any questions. My sample of weaving which I brought away with me has inspired me to sign up for the next course. Thank you Rebecca
Shaun Noelene BROWN - - #21275
I very much enjoyed Rebecca's laid back, patient approach to teaching which displays her understated but obvious passion for the subject. She clearly loves it and explains things very clearly (although there is a lot to take in). I am seriously thinking about following up the introductory day as I was inspired by the potential of the end products - absolutely love the lampshades Rebecca designs and produces!
Angela - - #21274
What a lovely way to spend an evening. Rebecca’s calm and relaxed approach made us feel very welcome. Her passion, knowledge and experience was evident. We are so pleased with the woven samples that we bought home, now we just need to decide what to create with them! Thank you
Viv - - #21273
A wonderful course with a relaxed yet productive atmosphere. Rebecca explained everything really well and answered our questions fully. We were able to explore many different weaving patterns to produce our take home sample. Rebecca's wealth of experience in terms of weaving and teaching shone through to help us iron out minor hiccups we had made and thus enable us to spot our own errors later. Her own work is stunning!
Sue - - #20799
I’ve always been fascinated to find out how fabric is woven and this course was an excellent introduction. Rebecca explains things brilliantly in her lovely workshop and is very skilled, knowledgeable and professional. There was lots of hands on time to experiment with different patterns and understand how the loom works. I’ve come home with a lovely sample which I will use to make a purse.
Catherine - - #20793
My husband bought me this course after we had met Rebecca at the Maltings Christmas market. I am local and live all things fibre. I was really interested to have a go at traditional weaving. I wasn’t expecting a one in one so I was delighted to have 3 hours with Rebecca, sharing her top notch skills and experience and using her fantastic resources. I’m hoping to do an intermediate course in the future.
Amanda Matthews - - #20766
The three hour morning as an introduction to weaving was fantastic, Rebecca was inspiring and she made it so interesting. She touched on setting up the looms and within the first hour we were weaving ourselves and it was very rewarding to come home with a piece of handmade fabric. It was mesmerising and I would love to continue to learn more and progress. Thank you Rebecca for a fabulous morning, I couldn’t recommend this “taster” session more highly.
Alex Welman - - #20763
My wife and I had a super time with Rebecca, everything was well prepared for our basic's weaving session. Rebecca made us very welcome and quickly put us at ease. It did not takes us long to start producing interesting weaving (my pattern was a bit more obscure !) We are now keen to try out the loom we have and build on the very good instruction Rebecca gave, she made it so easy to follow.
We would recommend having a look at the lamp shades Rebecca makes , they are superb. We are hoping to have 2 made to fit it exactly with our new lounge decor .
Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who fancies a try at weaving.

A lovely setting for this excellent weaving introduction.. very informal but super informative and this complete novice managed a lovely decent sized and pretty sample to take away, thanks to Rebecca’s patience and help! Beware... this could start an addiction!
Liz usher - - #20422
I'm now TOTALLY hooked on weaving after completing this course, and can't wait to go back for the intermediate course. Rebecca's course has the balance between theory and practical just right -she is really informative whilst giving plenty of time for actual weaving and experimenting with different designs. Rebecca is very encouraging and supportive, and the workspace has a lovely feel to it. The class was over far too quickly, and I came away buzzing with ideas for next time.
kaye bridgewater - - #19872
This course is a wonderful introduction to weaving which I would highly recommend. Rebecca had set up the loom ready for us and so once she had taught us the basics we were ready to go and give it a try. By the end ( which came all too soon!) we had a sample which demonstrated the various weave structures we had chosen to do. Thank you Rebecca!
Sarah Ainsworth - - #19688
This course was a relaxed and fun way to spend a morning. The cosy studio was full of bright and varied yarns to choose from, Rebecca had done the hard work in setting up the looms for us, so all we had to do was learn the basics and enjoy playing with colour and pattern. We left with a piece of woven wool each, which we had made and that we can make into something to remind us of the day. I had no idea I would find weaving so fascinating and relaxing! Great experience, and the biscuits were very nice :-)
Liz Evenden - - #19204
Excellent course, professional, friendly and encouraging. A fantastic introduction to weaving and I am very eager to continue.
Tamasin Ellis - - #18730
I cannot wait to go back for a second class. With only two of us there I felt like I could ask all the questions I wanted. She has lovely looms and a very modern aesthetic.
Kristiina Ouzounis - - #18705
What a wonderful morning! Rebecca was knowledgeable, patient and friendly. The looms were set up to go so we had plenty of time to try different weave patterns and colours, but Rebecca also took us through the process of setting up a loom in detail, giving my fellow trainee and me enough confidence to have a go ourselves. I am not naturally very creative but found it easy to create a piece of fabric which wowed my friends and family! I am now looking to buy my own loom as I enjoyed it so much. If you are wondering whether to give this course a go or not, then dither no more, do it! Thanks Rebecca, it was fabulous xx
Fi James - - #18626
Jennifer is an excellent teacher. She is super organised and she keeps things moving at the right pace. Even though it can be a little overwhelming at first seeing the loom set up, things become clear just as they need to, so it makes it very suitable for absolute beginners. Before I knew it I was off to the races weaving up a storm. It's such a thrill to see the sample growing and to have such a lovely piece of fabric to take home. I am seriously hooked now. I've just booked in for the intermediate course with Rebecca next year.
Amanda - - #18237
Rebecca's beginners workshop was a wonderful introduction to the craft. Just run with two of us on it so plenty of time to be guided and ask qiestions. Looms were already set up so we had time to actually weave but Rebecca gave us a clear explanation of the steps and work inbolved in setting up so we had a good idea of what that would involve if we wanted to do more in the future. The manual which R gave use was again very helpful and clear. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning, the 3 of us had a lovely chat and I came away with a food sampler and an urge to buy a loom! Also.good biscuits :-)
Fiona Louise Henderson - - #18220
Thoroughly enjoyable and informative evening spent with Rebecca on the beginners weaving course. I would love to learn more and eventually get my own loom. Thank you Rebecca
Laurie Smith - - #17743
Rebecca's approach for a beginners workshop was perfect & absolutely what I had hoped for. She provided just enough detail regarding the how of weaving to bring me to the loom understanding, in a very satisfying way, the basics to give it a go. I genuinely felt Rebecca wanted to share both her knowledge and her love of weaving with me. What could be better in a teacher. Loved it. Want to do more. Without hesitation recommend Dobby & Rose beginners workshop and thank Rebecca for such a lovely experience.
Helly W - - #17661
I would definitely recomend this course. Rebecca is a great teacher, her lesson was very well organised and 100% hands on. I came home with a piece of fabric, which I will treasure. I would like to come back soon to do the advanced course. I had a very enjoyable afternoon.
Jana Bowhill - - #17064
I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn how to weave. Rebecca is an excellent teacher. Her instructions are very clear and easy to follow no matter what level of ability, so we were made to feel very comfortable. I came along with my husband for a beginners session and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we have both got the weaving bug now! We intend to carry on learning via Rebecca and I'm planning to book the next session as soon as possible. Thank you Rebecca!
Rebekah Palmer - - #16798
I spent such an interesting and engaging evening with Rebecca as she showed me the basics of weaving and then let me loose one of her looms to try out a variety of patterns.
I left with written details and a lovely sample of my evening's work. I would highly recommend Rebecca as a friendly, informative and encouraging teacher. I plan to go back!
Jacqueline Epps - - #16541
I wanted to have a go at weaving on a loom. I was delighted when I found this course. Rebecca is a really inspirational teacher. She has a great mix of patience, enthusiasm and encouragement. You finish with a piece of work you have woven to show off to family and friends! She has really inspired me to look into further weaving, especially how to set up a loom. Thank you for a great experience!
Penny Malik - - #16436
I spent a fascinating morning learning the basics of weaving which was perfectly pitched for a complete beginner allowing hands-on experience and some technical information to understand the process. It was absorbing and the time flew past. Rebecca explains the details without overwhelming you. I would highly recommend this course - it was fun and inspired me to consider learning more so the next course is being arranged.
Gill Schooledge - - #16300
My daughter, Joanna, and I spent a fabulous morning with Rebecca! It was Joanna's first experience with a loom, and she was hooked straight away! I hadn't woven for 34 years, so needed a gentle re-introduction. Rebecca was a warm, enthusiastic teacher, who worked at our pace, explaining clearly the basic processes, giving us lots of time to experiment with all the lovely colours and textures. We are thrilled with our sample cloths, and have come away with lots of ideas! Thoroughly recommend this course!
Sally-Ann Hooper - - #16006
Loved this course. Rebecca is an excellent teacher, very inspirational and gave me lots of practical advice (I am planning to get some alpacas when I retire and process the wool myself). The day just flew by and I'm now completely hooked!
Frances Black - - #15791
Excellent course, I can well recommend it. Rebecca is lovely and the setting is idyllic.
Rachel Glasgow - - #15777
Rebecca was a wonderful coach being calm and very knowledgeable. I have been interested in weaving for years but never tried it and was delighted with the outcome. I will certainly explore this amazing craft further.
Libby Halford - - #15492
This course was fantastic and gave me the basics of weaving. I had never woven twill before!
Rebecca was very clear in her explanations and gave notes at the end which covered all we had achieved. She demystified the weaving charts so we could follow a pattern. I'm going back next month to learn more. She is an excellent, patient teacher.
Thank you Rebecca
Denise - - #15455
I was so excited about spending the morning with Rebecca and having a taster of what loom weaving was like. The workshop did not disappoint! I had a great time and learnt so much. Rebecca patiently walked us through the technicalities of loom weaving (the set up of which is way more complicated than I imagined) and then we had lots of time to get weaving! I would highly recommend this workshop and am now excited to learn more and have another go!!
Alice Ellis - - #15296
I had a smashing day and the time went very quickly. Rebecca know her stuff and made it all seem very easy. At the end of the session I had a sample of weaving, despite getting the pattern wrong in the beginning, Rebecca turned it around so it all looked lovely in the end. A great day and would love to do it again.
Anne Rowlandson - - #14840
My 13yr old son and I had a super time with Rebecca in her lovely craft room, surrounded by glorious countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3hrs learning how to weave. My son - a typical teenager - was absorbed through-out and produced a lovely sample to remember his day! We are both hooked on weaving!
Claire & Dylan Newman - - #14799
A very enjoyable introduction to weaving. Well-pitched for complete beginners, with the loom all ready and set up to start weaving straight away. Room to begin to experiment with patterns independently, but with only two in the class, plenty of support to improve technique and answer questions as you go along.
Plenty of tea and biscuits add to the enjoyment!
Clare - - #14217
The perfect introduction to weaving - a supported practical experience with a great outcome. I did not anticipate the speed with which the fabric grows, nor the quality of the fabric produced; it's exciting to see how one could progress to produce lovely tweedy patterns. I'm excited by this and look forward to taking it further.
Sarah Lohmann - - #13737
I signed up to the Beginners Weaving Workshop to learn a bit more about the process of weaving and making your own fabric. Rebecca expertly guided us through the basic mechanics, terminology and art of weaving, without bombarding or overwhelming us with technical jargon. She is an extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher and rather than feeling like we were being led through the motions, we were gently encouraged to have a go, be creative and experiment. The atmosphere was relaxed yet industrious and the three hours flew by. I have come away with a one-of-a-kind piece of handwoven fabric and the urge to weave again! Thank you Rebecca for a lovely morning.
Catherine - - #13345
What a lovely way to spend a few hours. Rebecca made the process so easy to follow - before I knew it I was weaving a tartan style piece of woollen cloth. She demystified the loom (a fearful looking engine) and answered all my questions thoroughly.
A really helpful introduction to weaving with a table loom. Highly recommended.
Lynne - - #13161
I really enjoyed the introductory workshop with Rebecca! I learnt so much and she was very patient with my long list of questions! Thank you very much for an enjoying morning of weaving! Now to get a loom!
Naima Rafferty - - #13155
I attended the beginners weaving class today with my mum and we had the best time. Rebecca is a great teacher, she makes you feel relaxed and gives you the space to experiment with the loom. She combines knowledge with enthusiasm to provide a fun morning. I have attended many craft courses over the years and this has to be one of the best.
Ella edwards - - #12668
Rebecca explained patiently and concisely and very quickly we were actually weaving. Really pleased with what we produced and would come again. Lovely cup of tea and cake too!
Lisa P - - #12507
Had a fantastic morning with Rebecca learning some of the basics of loom weaving. Rebecca was very patient with the many questions I had. The course was very flexible allowing my friend and I to explore and create in our own directions but offering us guidance when we needed it. Thoroughly enjoyable and very relaxing.
Lucy Rodd - - #12502
A great introduction to weaving. An interesting explanation to the loom and how it is set up and then you have a go! Rebecca answered my numerous questions very patiently. It was great to try out different patterns and to come away with a piece of woven material that I had done. I'll be back to weave another piece again.
Margaret Taylor - - #9747
I had a wonderful morning with Rebecca. She made the inexplicably complexities of weaving understandable to a complete novice. By the end of the session I had weaved a beautiful sample to frame incorporating various techniques. Rebecca is passionate, incredibly knowledgable about weaving (she has a weaving degree) and a patient and thoughtful teacher. In addition, she makes rather good cookies too!
Jo Saunders - - #9688
I had a fantastic morning of weaving on this course. I felt slightly overwhelmed when I first looked into the loom but before I knew it Rebecca had explained the main technical bits and I was weaving. As soon as Rebecca saw that I needed some help or a tip that would help she was there…I also enjoyed asking her a myriad of other weaving questions which she was more than happy to answer.
I have booked my next lesson already!
RooNovak - - #9366
The course with Dobby and Rose is amazing! Becci is full of weaving knowledge and answered all of my questions. She is also very patient which was appreciated as I am new to weaving. It was lovely to come away with a sample that I had made. I highly recommend the course!
