What a brilliant day and we were very lucky with the weather and the sun was shining most of the day at the beautiful location of Walford Mill in Wimbourne. Jack ensured we were all taught the importance of using the axe and knives safely and was always willing to help and give advice during the day.
I was a total beginner and had no idea when I arrived what I would be doing but I came away from the course with a lovey spoon which I am very proud of. I would recommend this course to anyone whether a beginner or experienced.
Thank you Jackš
I loved my spoon carving day. Iād dabbled at home but wanted some hands on tuition and the day fitted what I wanted perfectly. I came away wishing Iād booked the follow up day as well.
I bought this course because I wanted to know about spoon carving. Jack was a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructor. He managed to get the information over very clearly for a mixed group of people. I went home with a nearly finished spoon and a part formed spoon.
I would highly recommend Jacks course to anybody.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Hi Alan, it was great to meet you and thanks for the lovely review. Good luck sorting that old hook knife out! This one day course was given as a birthday gift to my husband and me. Such an interesting and enjoyable day. Jack was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his craft. I was impressed at how he made sure we all adhered to safe practice without being a killjoy!
We were amazed at how a spoon materialized with support, as and when required, by just using an axe and some very sharp knives!
We would certainly recommend this course as a gift for someone or a treat for yourself.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Sue!The spoon carving workshop was given as a birthday gift.
It was awesome to meet Jack and hear about his passion for woodcraft, which definitely came through during the course with his teaching and advice. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and was proud to take home my finished spoon. All the tools and resources were of great quality and the location was lovely too. I would definitely recommend Jack and Fazey Woodcraft to anyone interested in doing something different or learning a new skill.
Thank you š
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Adam!Great day, excellent tutor, beautiful suroundings . Really enjoyed learning how to carve a spoon .āŗ
What a great day! The setting is wonderful with a nice cafe within 20 steps and a rippling brook too.
More importantly the instruction was fantastic - as a secondary school teacher I think a lot about quality instruction and Jack nailed the day in terms of safety, scaffolding the teaching with phased delivery of skills and enough time for practice under his supportive observation. The teaching was real quality and the advice on suitable tools really useful.
His knowledge of his field and enthusiasm is an inspiration.
It was almost a two hour drive but I would go again in a heartbeat.
He allowed some more experienced students to move on quicker and threw in a sharpening talk and demo for those interested.
Highly recommended.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thankyou Steffan!I recently attended a 'Spoon carving workshop' hosted by Jack of Fazey Woodcraft, and what a great day it was! We were provided with all the necessary tools and equipment, with instruction from Jack into the correct and safe use of each implement. This was followed by an introduction into the properties of the wood used in green woodworking, with particular attention to the piece we were about to craft. The group of willing students was small enough to allow Jack to provide each of us with one-to-one assistance when required, whilst keeping a watchful eye on the rest of the group. His tuition was pitched perfectly for our skill level, in this case mainly newcomers to the art. As we progressed through the day he demonstrated different carving techniques to enable us to complete our task successfully. We all left with our āworks of artā, with mine requiring a little āhomeworkā to complete the finished look. I slowed towards late afternoon, as Iām not used to working with fine tools for prolonged periods and finger-fatigue began to set in! Nevertheless, Iāll be going back for Jackās more advanced spoon carving workshop and maybe some of his other workshops too. Thereās a world of green woodworking knowledge yet to learn, and I would certainly recommend Fazey Woodcraft as a great starting point for anyone who may be interested.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Sue! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! I look forward to seeing you again on another workshop!I couldn't wait for my spoon carving day. Jack was a really good, engaging, thorough teacher. Having a small group was perfect also. He patiently demonstrated and explained all aspects of carving and definitely gave us the confidence to (hopefully) carry on. Thank you Jack!
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
My pleasure Jody! Great to meet you both, good luck on your spoon carving journey!A great way to spend a wet Sunday - under a gazebo! Jack was well prepared and an excellent tutor. He is very knowledgeable and happy to share his skills and enthusiasm for wood carving. We had good quality tools to use which made the learning easier. Already booked on the bark course!
Had a great day, despite the rain! Such an absorbing (and potentially addictive) activity! Jackās teaching was excellent.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thankyou! It certainly helped you all remaining in good spirits despite the damp! See you again.Had a really good time, even though it was raining and cold, we sat under a gazebo and everything was good. Made a spoon. Talked about interesting stuff. Enjoyed the other people there. Very welcoming relaxed atmosphere. Jack is very engaging. Really glad I did this. Wasn't sure what to expect.
It was very good.
Michael
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Michael, it was great to meet you both. Good luck in your woodworking adventures! It turns out that spoon carving is fun. Great fun, and very therapeutic. Five of us (all socially distanced) spent yesterday celebrating special birthdays with the brilliant Jack from Fazey woodcraft and had such a memorable day. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are chuffed that we each have a spoon(like) memento of the day. As long-time friends we usually spend most of our time talking, non-stop. Yesterday at times all you could hear was the (almost) metronomic sound of axe or knife on wood as we focused our attentions on creating our own personal 'masterpieces'.
Jack's technical mastery and the artistry that goes into making a spoon were evident but so were his excellent teaching and communication skills which made the day even more enjoyable. He clearly loves what he does and, with a sense of responsibility combined with fun, is able to inspire that enthusiasm in his novice students too.
I would absolutely recommend Jack and spoon carving. A great day. Thank you Jack.
This course was amazing! Jack was a very calm and encouraging teacher, full of knowledge. Walford Mill is a beautiful location and the staff are excellent, with lots of other things to see. I would love to do more courses there soon and visit their wonderful exhibitions.
I recently attended a spoon carving course run by Jack and it was a fantastic experience. The event was extremely well organised and Jacks delivery style ensures a relaxed learning experience. He built confidence step by step and by the end I had a number of projects completed.
Would definitely rebook for more courses.
Thanks Jack
What a great day! Jack was friendly and approachable. The course layout meant everyone progressed together and left with not just a spoon, but the techniques and knowledge to safely continue carving at home. Highly recommended!
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Cheers Seth! Hopefully see you again on 'The Next Level' Workshop! What a great day. Jack gave very clear instructions, was attentive to the group, timely, knowledgeable... He was also totally "on" the Covid issue, but in a low-key way. I felt very safe. What else can I say. Unhesitating recommendation.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Rebecca, so glad you enjoyed it!He is a truly excellent teacher. He carefully breaks down content and provides memorable pieces of theory, application and practice. The course was incredibly fun, relaxing, and we all walked away with new skills, and a beautiful spoon!
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks for the kind words! So glad you enjoyed it!I wanted to start 2020 learning new skills and spoon carving had been on my bucket list for a while so when I saw the course I signed up and what a course it was! Jack is an excellent teacher and explained in detail each step of the way to producing my final spoon with all my fingers intact! It was such a great day and a lot of fun and I canāt wait to sign up for the improvers course soon. Would recommend his course to anyone looking for a well priced fun day.
Jack has something for everyone. I had a little experience carving spoons and my wife had none but we both learned a lot throughout the day. The course felt relaxed and we both felt like we got all the instruction we needed.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Ben! Get yourself on 'The Next Level' spoon carving workshop.... ššJake was very clear, and explained things well, before we started. He watched us and helped us when we needed, and he was encouraging. I had never done anything like this before, and so was worried I'd get it all wrong, but learning the right way to do things was valuable.
I'm not sure how many spoons a person needs though, so I'm hoping to learn to carve other things once I get better at spoons.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks for the review Wendy.. and for the record you can never have enough spoons! The 1 day course from Fazey Woodcraft was brilliant!
Jackās knowledge of wood and carving is huge and his approach to the course was perfect. Letting us learn our own mistakes but also helping at the right times so we didnāt ruin what we were making.
This workshop was a great thing to do. Carving is very therapeutic!
I would highly recommend this to anyone, even if they donāt consider themselves to be a practical person.
Response from Fazey Woodcraft:
Thanks Joel. šI loved this course and Jack is a brilliant teacher. By the end of the day I came away with one spoon and another in the making and a desire to buy the tools and get cracking on some more. The beginnings of a great hobby for life! He was thorough in teaching us how to handle the tools safely and guided us through each stage. No one was left behind and Jack was available for help at any moment with a watchful eye at all times yet allowing us to feel our own way at the same time.
Many thanks šš» Jack for a wonderful creative day.
