Opening 25 Aug. 2-metre distancing and smaller groups.
Silver clay is an exciting medium that appeals to both jewellery novices and more experienced craftspeople. It requires little by way of equipment and responds beautifully to the imagination! Silver clay can be moulded, rolled, stamped, shaped and will retain fine imprinted detail. It lends itself particularly well to texture, 3D forms and experimentation. Fired on the day, your design will bond into a finished piece of pure silver, ready to take away. Join us and create your own unique pendant, earrings or brooch.
We will have lots of designs, images and textures to inspire ideas and use within your work. You are welcome to gather textures, leaves, feathers, shapes and flowers on the farm to inspire your work or imprint into your designs. Depending on how fast you work, you can expect to create at least two pieces, maybe more.
Jo Dix is a designer-maker based in Milnthorpe where she has a retail shop and workshop. Qualified as a secondary school teacher in the mists of time, Jo has made jewellery for 20 years, and made it her career 15 years ago when she moved to Cumbria. Jo works predominantly in silver and gold, although she also creates fused glass jewellery when she has time. Most of her business is commission based, but being passionate about learning and sharing her knowledge, it is no surprise that she has also been teaching jewellery making since 2005 and is an inspirational teacher.
This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay on the farm. Check out our website for availability.
All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.

There is an additional material fee of £30 will be charged for the silver clay, which will allow you to make a small pendant and/ or a pair of earrings. Further silver clay can be bought from Jo if you would like to make more. All equipment is provided.

A wonderful day. Jo is an excellent teacher who guided us all through the use of silver clay with plenty of detail and useful tips. She has endless patience and supported everyone to develop their own ideas. I was delighted with the pieces I made and would recommend every aspect of both the workshop and venue. We had a lovely lunch sitting in the beautiful sunshine, I will certainly go again.
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Thanks Heather for lovely comments. I will pass them on to Jo. Look forward to seeing you again.
What a lovely day we had. Wonderful views! Excellent lunch. And a very good teacher. We all came home with beautiful pieces of silver jewellery. Jo had time and patience with everyone. Joan
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Lovely to meet you Joan and thanks for your kind words. We look forward to seeing you again.
A perfect and wonderful way to spend a day with like minded people. The setting was wonderful and the weather was glorious. I think I was glad I’d put a little thought into my creation but still felt like I couldn’t commit when the time came to it! Not sure whether I’d gone with too many ideas and going with a more clueless approach would have been better(?). Love the fact we left the session with a finished piece. Nothing seemed too much bother for Jo. She worked around the group expertly supporting everyone. I enjoyed the explanations she gave around how to work with the clay, why things would and wouldn’t work. The session ran over expected time but this didn’t seem an issue. No feeling of being rushed. Obviously there was a little time pressure as we couldn’t stay all day and night! Although I didn’t need it, Jo provided a sort of after-course service to help people get their desired finished for pieces. I thought this was an exceptional service from a tutor.
Definitely inspired to do some more creating of my own. Would look into doing another silver clay knowing what I know now! Have booked another course for this summer at The Cowshed already!
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Thanks so much for such detailed feedback. I have passed your lovely comments on to Jo and look forward to seeing you again.
Stunning location, inspiring and relaxing. Jo is an excellent teacher, she made it very easy for us all to produce great pieces. George is a great host and she looked after us with the most amazing healthy lunch plus fabulous cake! Highly recommend Cowshed Creative as a location and Jo Dix as a teacher. Will definitely go again.
