This unique course to make your own green woodworking 'shave horse' from Oak & Ash. Usually this is a 1-2-1 experience.
A shave horse is a devise that clamps down a piece of wood with your feet, allowing your hands to be free whilst shaping any timber. It's a tool that is absolutely critical in helping to make a rustic piece of green wood furniture.
This course is an opportunity to 'unplug & slow down' & take a step into the rural life of an old fashioned village carpenter. During this very 'hands on' experience you will learn many traditional carpentry skills & techniques using a selection of beautiful old hand tools.
The Rustic Carpentry workshop is an historic old tithe barn on a farm which is 5 mins drive from Loughborough train station (we can collect you from the station!)and right in the heart of The National Forest. We specialise in the ancient and traditional art of green wood working & rustic carpentry, coppicing and bush craft skills.
Ian Varley is a rustic oak furniture maker so most of his time is spent on commissions such as rustic benches and seating for parks and woodlands, play structures, cleft fencing and oak timber framing. Ian specialises in creating handcrafted unique pieces and use only timber sourced from sustainably managed woodlands within the boundaries of the national forest.

An amazing experience. Ian’s attitude to rustic work in my opinion is second to none. The experience I had was certainly fulfilling. If you like carpentry you would most certainly not go wrong by going on a course with Ian. He has really good person skills. The time with him was not only enjoyable but educational as well. Thank You Ian.
A brilliant day learning skills with different heritage tools to make a shave horse.
Ian is a great teacher; patient, very skilled and knowledgeable and encouraging.
This course was just what we needed after a very busy term and we felt thoroughly engaged and ended up with a shave horse that we can use in our Forest School.
We will be back to learn from Ian again ! Many thanks.
Ian fitted me in at short notice with a condensed day, which worked out well for both of us I think. Fantastic day of learning yet more new skills and came away with a great new device which I was very pleased with. The only small issue now, is finding some spare cash for all the new tools I want to buy.
Well recommended and a good development from the rustic stool course for those wanting to learn a bit more.
