I am a professional jeweller and adult education teacher - teaching jewellery making since 2009. I offer individually tailored 1-1 / private tuition with me at my lovely studio in Camden Town, London. I can also accommodate groups of two if you'd like to come for a different type of day out with a friend or family member..
I work primarily in silver, but I like to be able to mix the silver with designs that incorporate different materials and techniques, from textiles and beads, to stones. I therefore have a fairly broad range of skills and can offer a wide range of options for both complete beginners and more advanced students wanting to add to their skills.
Teaching from my studio in central London - close to Camden Town station, I have everything you need on hand to make your own gorgeous jewellery to take away with you.
Whether you are completely new to jewellery making and fancy trying your hand, are starting at a new hobby, fancy a fun day (or evening) out with a friend, or already create your own jewels and want to build on your existing skills, I can help you create unique, professionally finished jewellery.
This listing is to learn how to work with silver precious metal clay.
Silver clay is a relatively new material that requires a very different way of working and thinking to regular metal fabrication:
Silver clay is a magical material - recycled silver particles suspended in an organic water based clay - it can be worked just like other clays, then dried, refined and eventually fired to create a solid silver form.
Beginners can create two or three simple pieces in a day (or one more complex one) and improvers can add skills including stone setting, creating different types of 3D shapes, making rings, and more.
I also offer tuition in different jewellery areas - see my other listings, or contact me for more information:
- Silver and gemstone jewellery
- Bead stringing and wirework
- Pearl knotting
- Kumihimo (Japanese braiding)
- Wax carving for jewellery
- Stitched beadwork
- Electroforming for jewellery
I offer one off, one day sessions as an introduction to, or skills boost on a specific chosen topic or style of jewellery making, as well as offering blocks of sessions for those looking for longer term support, mentoring, or to build more skills.
All tuition is personally tailored to you. Classes will be socially distanced - wearing masks when we need to get closer, and all tools and equipment sanitised before the session.
I have been making jewellery for around 25 years, have a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing (1999), and have been teaching jewellery making since 2009, when I completed my initial training for teaching adult education classes. I love making jewellery and sharing my skills with new people from all over the world; I have occasional repeat students visiting from Italy, France, Egypt, Norway, as well as from all around London and the UK.
Do get in touch anytime, and we can discuss what you would like to work on and what jewellery you will create.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The price listed is for a single day for one person - this includes an individually tailored schedule of projects / exercises for the day based on your own interests and experience (discussed and planned in advance by e-mail), and my undivided help and attention for the day!
All the materials and information you need to complete these projects and create your own gorgeous jewellery to take away with you are included in the price, as well as refreshments during the day.
Lunch is not included, but there are many local shops and cafes, or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Also includes a short Zoom follow up session after the day if needed.
Alternatives are available for shorter or multiple sessions, or to add a second person if desired.

Hi All.. I have recently done the copper electro-forming course with Penny. I have been wanting to do it for some time and I finally found someone super talented to teach me. I did Pennys electro-forming 2 day course. I wanted to combine the course with my love of crystals which penny helped me with and she customised it to what I wanted to achieve. Penny is an amazing teacher and really recommend the course to anyone. No previous jewellery experience needed either :-). Penny has inspired me to start making jewellery with copper and crystals and I have began making a collection to sell on my instagram... Watch this space.. Thank you Penny x
Response from Penny Akester Jewellery:Thanks for the review! I'm so glad you enjoyed the weekend - can't wait to see what you create with it, do share lots of pics - good luck with all your ideas/plans!!
