About the Course
The 2 day stone setting course in Ely is the ideal way to further develop your skills in making silver jewellery, with a specific focus on basic rub-over stone settings. Within the two day course, you will have ample opportunity to explore various stone setting approaches and be able to take the skills away with you to further develop in your own making context.
The course is designed for those of you who have some basic knowledge of silver jewellery making and is ideal for people who have previously taken the one and two day silver jewellery courses with Jonathan Deer Jewellery. Unfortunately the course is not suitable for complete beginners.
The following topics are covered, with plenty of hands on to put into practice what we cover in the stone setting course:
- Introduction to stone setting options – the key techniques in stone setting
- Overview of stone options (semi-precious and precious gemstones)
- Useful tools and resources needed for stone setting
- Bezel setting for uniform round/oval cabachons
- Bezel setting for non-uniform shaped cabochons
- Basic Tube setting approaches (including making a ring/pendant to provide a base for a tube set)
- Flush setting
As all our classes cater for a maximum of three participants, you can be sure that you will have a more personalised experience and truly have the mentoring and guidance needed.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
You will be provided with all the basic materials needed to complete the course, including silver for a ring/pendant and tube/bezel strip/wire for setting. Practice stones are also provided (cubic zirconia and quartz).
Prior to the course I can arrange for the purchase of semi-precious/precious stones (prices according to stones selected), if you’d like to complete a project using stones you have chosen - please contact me directly for options and to discuss suitability of stones for specific projects.
During the two days I provide a light lunch and tea, coffee and homemade biscuits.
This is the second course i have completed with Jonathan, and again it was a comprehensive and exciting course.
Jonathan runs small classes so you always feel like you have one to one time and whatever your ability he always boosts your confidence.
I have hopefully made some new friends and we defiantly had fun over the two day course.
I cannot recommend these courses highly enough to anyone who wants to learn a new skill set.
Thanks Jonathan and Helen for another warm welcome.

The second course I’ve done with Jonathan Deer and thoroughly enjoyed it as expected. Not too many participants is there is a generous allowance of time to practice what is taught and to make an item of jewellery to take away. Everyone was happy to be on the course and receptive to the easy but informative delivery of the course content. Certainly delivered what was promised in a relaxed atmosphere. Would highly recommend this and other courses by the same provider.

Excellent course, outstanding teacher! Three students including me, learned so much in two days and I came away feeling enthused and excited to make more jewellery.
Jonathan's teaching style is informal and fun, he made us feel comfortable from the beginning and like friends by the end. I feel much more capable than before the course and am looking forward to coming back for another course!

Such a wonderful teacher. 2 days learning so much about all aspects of stone setting. Great knowledge of techniques and so practical. Recommended to anyone wanting to start the journey of stone setting. I found the confidence to start working on my own pieces, thanks to Jonathan.

Absolutely loved this course. After doing the 2 day silver jewellery making course with Jonathan 3 weeks ago I was really excited to learn how to finish off my pieces with stones and it was even more rewarding than I'd expected. I came away with pieces of jewellery that I'd actually buy which felt like a great achievement. As before, Jonathan communicated everything so well, made sure to balance information with hands on practice, managed to split his time evenly between all 3 of us on the course and make sure we were ok with what we were doing at all times. Not to mention he kept us well fed and watered. Would recommend to anyone wanting to learn the basics of stone setting.

Three of us arranged a bespoke date for the 2 day course with Jonathan and what I can say is that it was a fabulous, informative and inspiring two days. Aside from the great introduction to stone setting that it gave us, we also learned a lot about gemstones themselves. I had no idea that there were so many options and cuts available and Jonathan shared his in-depth knowledge with us and gave us great advice on buying stones, as well as different types available. He provided in depth worksheets/information guides as well as ring sizing, carat weight and gemstone charts (nicely laminated for a mucky workshop!) that I think will be invaluable in future, for both revision and general use.
I can speak for us all in that we can now go ahead with confidense with basic stone setting, the process has been demysitified, and with this wonderful workshop as a solid grounding feel far more able to stone set as a part of our jewellery making attempts! Thoroughly recommend the course and the teas and coffee and biscuits and great lunches were a definite bonus too.
