About the Course
Release your inner creative on our Introduction to speed sketching experience run by Edinburgh artist Mark Kirkham.
Capture in detail the historical architecture, unique heritage features and charming landscape of Edinburgh's city centre with Mark Kirkham, a local artist known as the Edinburgh Sketcher. Explore Edinburgh’s New Town and Portrait Gallery with a sketch book in hand, using ink and watercolour to bring your visit to life. You will take home your favourite drawing in a frame plus a number of other personal pieces documenting your journey.
With helpful instruction from Mark you will quickly pick up sketching skills while increasing confidence in your own artistic ability as you wynd through cobbled streets, Georgian crescents and stylish shop fronts.
On this half-day workshop, we will start with quick simple drawings in black ink and increase to more detailed pieces using watercolour washes as your confidence grows.
This experience is also available as a full-day workshop which allows you to develop your sketching skills more fully, and to explore a broader range of locations. And an Advanced option is also available to anyone who has completed an Introductory workshop. These dates are also included.
Our artists support you throughout the day offering one-to-one guidance and tips, as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.
The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited so our artists can offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided, as are all the materials you will need. Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
All The Arienas Collective experiences are also available as a private group booking. Please email us for details.
Please note that The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a first-floor open plan reception room and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies when booking.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The price for the day includes all materials and refreshments, including a framed copy of your favourite sketch to take home to enjoy and inspire you. Our full day workshops also include lunch.
Refreshment breaks - featuring locally sourced products - are an important part of The Arienas Collective experience. We are fortunate to have a fantastic range of independent shops and producers nearby who we love to support. Our breaks allow time to socialise, make new friends, and chat to the artists.
I really like Mark’s sketching style so I thought I would give this taster class a go. The Arienas Collective is a very relaxed, creative environment. From the moment I arrived I felt welcome. I had the chance to chat with the other members of the group over a cup of tea, a half and half mix of locals and tourists, before a brief introduction from Mark along with a look at his example sketchbooks. We then took our clipboards and pens out for sketching in the local New Town area. Each short sketch gave us the opportunity to try out a different technique including perspective, shape and shading. We then walked to the nearby Portrait Gallery and did two sketches in there. Back at the Arienas Collective we were treated to soup and cheese for lunch. We then learnt how to use watercolour to add colour washes to our sketches. I really enjoyed adding the layers of colour to my black and white drawings. All too quickly the course was over and we were choosing which of our sketches to put into a frame.
The Arienas Collective is a great place to come as a creative break from day-to-day life whether you come on your own or with a friend. This sketching course was an excellent taster class to learn the basics. Thanks to Mark and Lynn for a very productive morning! I am now looking at the full day class so I have more time to develop my skills and I’m off to buy some watercolours!

Response from The Arienas Collective:Thanks for your lovely and detailed feedback Anna. Mark has a knack for releasing the sketcher in everyone, and I'm so glad you enjoyed your morning with him capturing the beautiful Georgian New Town of Edinburgh. Your sketches were amazing! Best wishes, Lynn :-)
