About the Course

Copper wire is a wonderful medium with which to make structured jewellery. Combined with semi precious stones and glass crystal beads you can learn to make unique pieces for yourself or as gifts for family and friends.

This course focuses on the very basics to get you started working with wire and beads . During this one day course, you will be introduced to the tools, materials and techniques to produce a rosary link necklace and a pair of simple drop earrings, using copper wire and semi-precious gemstones.

The course runs from 09.30 - 15.30. We begin with an introduction to copper wire, its properties and how to choose the correct gauge for your projects. After this, we will look at the toolkit that we will be using and discuss each tool, how it is used most effectively to produce the best results and to protect your hands.

We will then go through the tutorial for making a simple pair of drop earrings. After this, you will learn the technique of rosary linking semi-precious beads with copper wire to produce a rosary link necklace and finishing off the piece with a hook clasp.

Lastly, you will learn how to make a simple plain copper wire ring

At the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and skills to select the correct wire gauges for your project. Cut and shape ear wires for and a simple hook fastening. Use a chasing hammer to work harden wire components and add hammered detail
Shape a simple ring on a ring mandrel

Using these techniques, you will leave the course with the skills to make fully handcrafted bracelets and necklaces and a simple ring or a chain bracelet.

The course is set on our beautiful boat with views overlooking the river Thames in Gloucestershire. Places on each course are limited to ensure everyone gets individual attention, I keep classes to a minimum and take two people only on each. Therefore, to ensure that you reserve a place on your preferred date, I recommend that you book early by emailing us using the 'Contact' form above.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

The use of all tools and materials to complete the projects are included in the price. However, there is the opportunity to purchase further wirework kits and materials on the day.

Please note that tea and coffee are provided, but please bring your own packed lunch.

We would also like you to know that we do have a cat on board. He is friendly and generally will keep out of the way. But we highlight this in case anyone has an allergy to cats. I'm afraid we can't put him anywhere else for the day.

A truly lovely day spent aboard a warm and cosy narrowboat with a fabulous welcome by Sarah & Martin. The course was great fun and Sarah is a very patient and excellent teacher, who took us through the basics for creating necklaces, earrings and pendants, and as we progressed introduced us to more complex techniques.
I thoroughly enjoyed my day, which was both productive and relaxing, and a truly lovely way to spend time with friends. I was amazed at how quickly the time went and what we managed to achieve in the time.
I am looking forward to the next course making Christmas Decorations.

Response from Crafty Boaters:

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the day. Looking forward to seeing you on the next course.

Where do I start...! What a wonderful day. The setting on Sarah and Martin's boat was just lovely - especially with the fabulous wood burner and Frobisher the cat for company (I hope I spelt his name right!).

We were instantly made to feel very welcome, and Sarah took us as slowly as we needed through basic wirework to enable us to create some lovely earrings, pendants and necklaces. We had a great selection of beads and colours of wire to choose from, and, as we progressed, Sarah showed us some more complex wirework, and the day just flew by!

I was so pleased with the items that I managed to create, and even took them to work to show my colleagues, who were also suitably impressed.

We had such a good time, we have booked in again to have a go at making some wirework Christmas decorations, and I am already really looking forward to it.

Highly recommended. :0)
