Glass enamelling on copper for jewellery - day course Rainbow Glass Studios with The Jewellery Boat

A handmade enamelled pendant, with hand painted detail

This exciting day course in enamelling on copper explores the skills and techniques of kiln enamelling, a colourful jewellery course brought to you by Eleanor Watson from The Jewellery Boat. The course is for anyone of 16 years old and above.

Due to the continued need to socially distance we now limit this course to a maximum of 4 people at a time in our studio to allow for this. The added benefit to students being smaller classes with more 1:1 attention possible. PPE will be provided which we will ask all students to wear whilst in the studio, and we will provide supplies of hand sanitiser. We will also have a supply of gloves if students would prefer to wear these as well.

We'll be exploring enamelling step by step, learning to fuse finely powdered enamel onto the surface of copper to create a beautiful glossy surface. These ancient techniques were first used by the Chinese, Greeks, Celts and Egyptians to decorate metal and add colour to metal jewellery and other precious objects.

If you love working with colour you will enjoy enamelling; the combinations are endless, the results swift and exciting to see as they emerge from the kiln. We will experiment with a range of simple decorative techniques to create your own one-off pieces to make your own unique jewellery or small pictures.

On this day course you will learn to:

Prepare copper for enamelling
Make several sample pieces using a range of techniques
Explore the use of opaque and transparent enamels
Use decorative inclusions (e.g. frit, glass threads, millefiori, and copper wire)
Cover health and safety and the kiln firing process
Explore colour, and surface designs with stencils, printing and drawing
Design at least one final piece to finish and mount on jewellery findings by the end of the day (most people make 2 or 3 or more...!)
A supply of silver-plated jewellery findings will be available on which to mount your sample pieces and information will be provided on suppliers of enamelling equipment and jewellery findings should you decide you want to pursue your new hobby.

Plenty of tea and coffee and biscuits will also be provided, enamelling is thirsty work!

We limit each enamelling workshop to a maximum of 4 people to ensure individual attention and faster learning and social distancing within the studio space.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All materials are included as well as a supply of jewellery findings to finish your pieces so you can wear them home.

Plenteous supplies of tea, coffee and biscuits.

You may either bring your own packed lunch or go out at lunchtime to enjoy one of the multitude of cafes on Stoke Newington Church Street, or head for Clissold Park for some time out in the "countryside" over lunch.

Eleanor is a wonderful tutor - patient, encouraging, creative, very safety conscious (important with kiln work!). She teaches you the basics of enamelling on copper and then shares a variety of decorative techniques, so that you can really let your creativity come out. I love this course so much that I’ve done it twice with different friends - and we’ve had a wonderful time on both occasions. Thanks Eleanor!!

Really fun! It was great to be able to walk away with 3 finished pieces, I just wish I had time to try out even more techniques and styles as there were so many different possibilities :D A very well laid out day with good use of time and satisfying results

Response from Eleanor Designs:

Thank you Louise, it was great to have you here for the day! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Do come back and we’ll work in more of your ideas and other techniques! the possibilities are endless! Hope to see you again soon! Eleanor

I wasn't sure what to expect, I love making jewellery and wanted to learn a new technique. This was a fabulous course, Eleanor has a wonderful way of teaching many different techniques, so you can explore your own ideas. Only time limited how many pieces you can make. I'm absolutely delighted with what I have made, and planning to book the advanced course.

Response from Eleanor Designs:

Hi Laura, I am so pleased you enjoyed the day! I'm just as excited to see what you all make with the techniques we cover! Well done! Look forward to seeing you again at a future course at Rainbow Glass Studios!

I did the day course in copper enamelling recently. It was just brilliant. From the inspiring workshop full of colourful examples of fantastic glass work to the careful attention to detail and tips that Eleanor shared - I left buzzing with ideas and information to be able to plan to start experimenting with my own enamelling. Thanks Eleanor - I might be back!

Really enjoyed this course. I loved the fact that I knew nothing about enamelling when I started in the morning and took home four lovely pieces, which I have already worn.
Eleanor was a lovely teacher, clear instructions and calm when when things got a bit panicky.
I am already planning my next course with her.

A well structured day with an excellent teacher and not a minute wasted. A chance to compare two common table top kilns, learn the health and safety aspects and study the behaviour of opaque enamels when fired.
Eleanor said 'Everyone has to start somewhere'. This is the place to start.

Learnt loads of new skills. Eleanor gave very clear instruction right from the beginning. New information was drip fed throughout the day at just the right level; with plenty of opportunity to recap when needed. She managed to achieve and excellent level of supervision whilst also letting up work on our own and at out own speed. Plentiful cups of tea and some very calm rescues when things went a limitless wrong. A perfect environment for first time enamellers

This was an excellent day. I had never done any enamelling before and Eleanor explained things patiently, helping us through the process and letting us experiment, giving lots of hints and tips along the way. I would recommend this to anyone. It was a fun day and we all learned such a lot about the enamelling process, taking home some lovely finished pieces. If you do come on this course, beware, I went back and bought a kiln and am now completely smitten!!5

A wonderful day. Eleanor is an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher, who explains and demonstrates clearly. Within a short time, we had finished our first piece of enamel. So much is put into one day, covering a variety of techniques, which we immediately put into practice. We all had some beautiful results. Thoroughly recommended!

I really enjoyed the enameling on copper workshop. I learnt a lot and found Eleanor a great tutor; informative, friendly and giving us all equal attention. A great day in a wonderful environment.

Clare McLoughlin - - #6369

This was a fantastic and informative course led by Eleanor who covered the basics in a short amount of time from preparing the copper to Hand S with enamels and kiln and techniques which can be applied. Throughout the day Eleanor gave hints and tips on the successes and mistakes(turned into interesting things) which will help when she is not there e.g firing times/what to look for/ enamel properties etc... There was a fantastic display of completed enameling which you could draw design inspiration from and inquire as to how they were completed. This was a highly creative day however I would agree that no previous experience would be required and no drawing skills needed. I would definitely go again. Many thanks to Eleanor for an inspiring day.

Eleanor was incredibly informative, helpful and very lovely company . She most certainly went the extra mile to help each student individually and I absolutely loved my experience of her class .
