Glass Enamelling on Copper for Jewellery - kiln enamelling

X

Description

This exciting day course in enamelling on copper explores the skills and techniques of kiln enamelling, a colourful jewellery course brought to you by Eleanor Watson from The Jewellery Boat. The course is for anyone over 16 years old. We'll be exploring enamelling step by step, learning to fuse finely powdered enamel onto the surface of copper to create a beautiful glossy surface. These ancient techniques were first used by the Chinese, Greeks, Celts and Egyptians to decorate metal and add colour to metal jewellery and other precious objects. If you love working with colour you will enjoy enamelling; the combinations are endless, the results swift and exciting to see as they emerge from the kiln. We will experiment with a range of simple decorative techniques to create your own one-off pieces to make your own unique jewellery or small pictures. On this day course you will learn to: Prepare copper for enamelling Make several sample pieces using a range of techniques Explore the use of opaque and transparent enamels Use decorative inclusions (e.g. frit, glass threads, millefiori, and copper wire) Cover health and safety and the kiln firing process Explore colour, and surface designs with stencils, printing and drawing Design at least one final piece to finish and mount on jewellery findings by the end of the day (most people make 3 or 4 or more...!) A supply of silver-plated jewellery findings will be available on which to mount your sample pieces and information will be provided on suppliers of enamelling equipment and jewellery findings should you decide you want to pursue your new hobby. Due to the continued need to socially distance we now limit this course to a maximum of 4 people at a time in our studio to allow for this. The added benefit to students being smaller classes with more 1:1 attention possible. FFP3 face masks will be provided as these are necessary for health and safety when sifting or working with powdered enamel. So much scope, so little time....it's a fun day, and you will be delighted with the results!

Maker

I'm Eleanor, I'm a jeweller and glass maker and I love colour, texture, design and pattern. I work across all of these in a variety of media including fused glass, enamel, silver, copper, anodised aluminium creating my one-off jewellery and glass pieces. I retrained as a jeweller in 2012, and I work with my husband at Rainbow Glass Studios where I thoroughly enjoy teaching weekend courses in glass and enamelling. I believe everyone has creativity and I want to encourage you to explore yours!
