Upon booking this online course I will post out the materials and colour instructions required to make up the Humming Bird Linen Panel with free machine embroidery. The five videos (emailed to you ) will all be accessed anytime from the date of purchase.
I will take you through step by step how I approach such a textile project. Participants will achieve a beautiful machine embroidered wall panel designed to go in a 10-inch hand embroidery hoop to be mounted on the wall or within a boxed frame. In this instance the hoop is purely for decoration as all the embroidery itself is done on machine without the use of a hoop as the fabric used is stable enough. I will send you the linen, paint and fabrics but there are some essentials you will need to have access to and these are listed.
Please allow a two week delivery time .
I will post both background Fuchsia and Blossom templates as well as the bird template itself for you to work from and whilst everyone who books on the project, will be working on the same humming bird template, the course is really about what you will learn on the way. The course covers composition , application of paint and appliqué, free motion stitch techniques and design transfer with the use of Heat and Bond. If you wish, you can change up the design , add elements of your own and move around the leaves and branches to make it more unique to you.
The course is designed for those with some free machine embroidery experience. If you have any queries at all please do not hesitate to click the 'chat with the maker' button.
Hummingbird, Fushia & blossom Templates (A. Waylett Designs)
You can choose which templates you use to surround the bird .
Heat and Bond
Stitch N Tear
Silver Leatherette for the branches.
Silk for body.
Blue sheers for 3-D flowers.
Red silk for Fushias and hummingbird chest.
Metallic green leatherette for hummingbird body.
Two pots of acrylic paint –, sea green metallic and sapphire metallic.
Hand dyed velvet in mint and sea green for the wings/leaves.
Linen for the base fabric. You can use cheaper, but this is my favourite.
A 10-inch hoop to display – or a 10-inch circular template to draw around.
Machine with ability to drop feed and Free motion foot.
Gutterman Textile glue.
Small amount of white acrylic or gesso.
Cocktail stick or pin for applying glue.
Very fine brush for painting flowers and wings.
Machine Embroidery Threads in various blues of your choice. I have also used a gold/green for highlighting and an off white for some of the background vermicelli.
You will need several bobbins.
90/14 machine needle and Pins
Hand sewing needle.
Soldering tool and glass mat and machine embroidery hoop would be helpful but not imperative.
Black bead for Hummingbird Eye
Tail Feathers ( Ebay)
I have used predominately blues in both designs with the accent of red for his chest but there is no reason why you can’t change up the colours from your own stash if you wish.

This course in a box is such a brilliant idea. The box comes with beautiful fabric and very clear instructions. The videos are easily accessible from the website and the beauty of doing this course is you can do it at your own pace. I have learned many new skills and I am really pleased with my finished piece. I might have to make another one. Thank you Alex.
Response from Alexandra Waylett:Thankyou so much Sheena - your finished piece is super xx
What can I say about this kit, and about Alex’s courses ..... designed for those of us with either little or lots of textile art experience.
Likewise If you have ever wanted to use your machine for more than clothes, curtains etc and really want to push your creative edge then Alex Waylett’s courses are for you ! Her kits take you step by step through the process, almost everything you need is provided in the kit other than your thread, your machine, sewing kit, brushes and perhaps any other little extras you want to add. Resources are of high quality and always sourced ethically.
Am working my way through the hummingbird kit just now but have others to start in the pile - thank you Alex for taking this time to invest in your courses and making them accessible to people who can’t make it to your wonderful studios.
Go for it - have fun and play!
Alex is a fantastic tutor and this kit is excellent containing ample beautiful fabric along with written instruction and several videos. This is the 4th kit I have had from Alex and I have been impressed with all of them. Her in person courses are also brilliant set in a light workspace with ample parking. The courses are well organised, friendly, informative and good value for money
A fantastic course which I really loved doing. This is the first online course I have done with Alex and the video tutorials make it very easy and fun was very happy with the results. You will definitely be doing at least one more so I have a pair as both designs are lovely. Thanks Alex, I will be keeping an eye out for any more of your courses.
Absolutely brilliant course well worth doing and I am so pleased with the finished piece. With a choice of two styles, I just had to purchase more fabric so I could do it all again. The videos and instructions were clear and easy to follow. Well done Alex for an excellent course.
Response from Alexandra Waylett:Thank you Debbie - so pleased you enjoyed it. Send me photos when your ready! Alex
I really enjoyed this course and I’m very pleased with my final outcome! The fabrics in the kit were beautiful and the instructional videos were clear and easy to follow. The techniques I learnt will help me to experiment with my own ideas. I’m really looking forward to working with my own fabrics using what I have learnt while looking at my hummingbird in pride of place on the wall!
Response from Alexandra Waylett:Aw - Thank you Sarah! The photos you sent were beautiful too. Thank you for taking the time to review the course. Alex
