About the Course

Shibori is a traditional Japanese hand dye technique. Join me in creating surface patterns on fabric by folding, tying, clamping and stitching samples of fabric. After preparing your fabric you will dip each piece in an indigo dye vat. After a few minutes, magical and exciting surface patterns will be revealed when the fabric pieces are exposed to the air. Make a fabric stash suitable for further textile experiments, stitching, quilting or gift wrapping.
Either bring your own pieces of fabric pre-scoured for dyeing or purchase fabric by the metre from me.

Please contact me for the early bird booking rate of a discounted price of £65.

Aims of the course
To know about an ancient and traditional Japanese Resist Dye technique.
To be able to create a range of surface patterns on fabric, useful for future textile projects.
Develop confidence through practice and be able to continue at home.

Whilst practising the folding, clamping, tieing of the fabric everyone will consider the geometry and predictability of regular resist methods in comparison to the unpredictable pattern formed by irregular resists.

As experiments are opened a wealth of shibori patterns will be revealed as will the visual phenomenon of lime-green dye turning to blue when the fabric is first opened. The visual surprise is very stimulating and inspiring.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Relaxed and informal yet busy and productive. There will be a limitless supply of coffee and tea all day and a light lunch will be provided.

Other notes: Amanda has found in the past that students have very different rates of productivity when preparing and dyeing their samples. Either bring your own fabric to dye or Amanda can supply at a reasonable cost. Making items to wear is totally possible on this day if you either bring a couple of items with you or purchase items for dyeing on the day.
