Botanical Eco-Printing in the Lake District

X

Description

Botanical contact printing, or eco-printing, is a method of transferring the shape and pigment of leaves onto cloth, to make a permanent image. This is achieved by tightly rolling a bundle of cloth and leaves, and steaming it. Results are very beautiful, often almost photorealistic, and are washable. This workshop is designed to teach you all the techniques you need to produce clear vivid prints from botanical materials on fabric. You will learn: Which fabrics to use and how to prepare them How to select leaves that print well How to use mordants – a way of helping to fix colour into your cloth How to roll your bundles correctly, for clear crisp prints What you need to start printing inexpensively at home, including how to work safely in your kitchen working in a way that is safe for you and the environment How to care for your printed fabrics Suitable for complete beginners or those with a little experience. (Please note that the following day, 4th July there will be a follow-on from this workshop to explore combining ecoprinting with natural dyes as a more advanced technique to develop your skills. See listing at bottom of this page). In the morning you will work on samples, and in the afternoon you will print a silk scarf, or a square of fabric large enough to make into a bag or cushion cover. Your tutor, Caroline, has a lifetime’s experience of working with textiles, but after discovering ecoprint and natural dyes eight years ago she has worked almost exclusively with these. Her work has been exhibited in a number of galleries and she has a worldwide reputation as an ecoprint teacher having run workshops in Greece, Italy, Morocco, France and the Azores.
