About the Course
Take your art in a new direction with this 3 day residential break at Flatford Mill.
This is a course designed especially for those with some experience in watercolour painting who have a love of and interest in flowers and plants and now wish to take their first steps in botanical illustration. The course begins with close observation of the subject and some sketching. We will take a look at composition and cover colour mixing and colour matching to our specimens, plus all those watercolour techniques needed to achieve the various textures required by the botanical illustrator. A full materials and equipment list is provided in the course details leaflet and all of your plants, flowers and other source material will be provided on the course, together with appropriate handouts.
Lesley Smith has been teaching Botanical Illustration in adult education for over 25 years. She started as a complete beginner and after 6 years was asked to take the class over when the tutor retired. Freda Titford her tutor had been taught by Mary Grierson at Flatford Mill and Mary attended classes with John Nash the founder of the course now run by Jenny Jowett SBA, a course that Lesley still attends regularly. She is particularly good with complete beginners and runs several courses throughout the year at Flatford and elsewhere.

Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.
The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
