About the Course

On this two day botanical art course you will be introduced to the techniques and processes used to create accurate plant portraits using a variety of media. Starting with simple line drawing you will be encouraged to focus in on the form and detail of autumnal subjects such as seed heads, fir cones and fruit.

You will be guided through how to depict these subjects in black and white on the first day (pencil, pen and ink) and an exploration of watercolour on day two. This course is suitable for beginners that are fascinated by the natural world, or those who want to delve into the process of producing realistic plant studies. More experienced artists can also be accommodated, bringing their own project if preferred.

Julia Trickey is an award-winning botanical artist and experienced tutor. She enjoys depicting the beauty and detail of nature in watercolour and is particularly drawn to less than perfect specimens such as autumnal leaves, seed heads and fading flowers, often depicting them larger than life. She has received many awards for her work including four RHS gold medals. Julia has produced written resources and online tutorials for botanical artists as well as articles for national art magazines. She teaches regularly in the beautiful historic city of Bath and runs workshops for botanical art
groups further afield.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Good course. I arrived late so it was my fault. I sat at a desk near the door, keeping me a seat. ( thank you). I was near the door and each time it was opened I was very cold. Being glass a draft from under it all the time. One lady hit her head not seeing the glass. Prehaps a sticker ? Lovely people, food good and teaching excellent. Time went too fast!!!!!

Response from Art & Inspiration at Sculpture by the Lakes:

Dear Selina - Yes we've written to everyone on the course about the draft and we've already got new heaters so everyone stays warm - thanks for the tip about the glass door too! Very glad you enjoyed the workshop despite missing the first half but hope you managed to catch up.... We hope to see you again at the Lakes soon.

Excellent course in idyllic surroundings. Julia is a very good teacher and makes the topic very accessible. Her own work is inspirational. The lunch was delicious and the company good. Thoroughly recommended.
