Quilt in a Day FOR TWO, in-person course for two people with Amanda Jane Ogden

If you have always wanted to try quilting, this course is for you. This is a one-day course, including six hours of individual tuition time for TWO people, for absolute beginners, to quilting and patchwork. Great for two family members or two friends to do together! The course will introduce you to all the basics for making a quilt: choosing fabric, cutting, joining pieces to make blocks, joining blocks to make rows, adding a border, quilting, trimming and finally binding a quilt. You will leave with a small quilt as a sample and with the skills and information to go ahead with tackling a full-size quilt in the future.

The course is taught at my studio, which is a 3-minute walk from my home in Kent. You only need to know how to use a sewing machine before you come. This is a full, but relaxed course, which will be tailored to you both (as the only learners that day), so that you get the most out of it. There will be lots of hints and tips given throughout the day.

Covid-19 information: during the day, masks are not required (but can be worn if preferred) a one-metre distance is maintained, the window is kept open (so bring an extra layer of clothing!), all surfaces and equipment are cleaned and sanitised before your arrival. There is a wash basin available for you to wash your hands.

Tutor information: Amanda Jane Ogden is a qualified and experienced teacher of textiles, who designs fabrics and writes quilt and sewing patterns for national magazines and for sale online.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All the tools and equipment for the day are provided, including the use of a sewing machine. Materials (fabric, wadding and thread) are included. You will be asked your colour preferences before you come and a carefully curated selection of fabrics will be waiting for you when you arrive. (However, if you particularly want to bring your own fabrics, Amanda can offer advice once the booking is made.)

Coffee or tea is provided (with biscuits) mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Please bring a packed lunch.

I had such a wonderful, fun, productive day learning to make a quilt with Amanda last week. Amanda is a very calm and patient teacher, with a wealth of experience and advice to offer. The fabrics that she had curated were lovely and I am so pleased to have come away with a completed mini quilt and the skills and enthusiasm to embark on my own quilting projects. The course was everything I hoped for, and more. Highly recommended to anyone thinking of giving it a go!

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:

Thank you Pauline for your review. It was a pleasure to teach you. This is just the start of your quilting adventure!

It was a very inspiring day and made quilting very doable even for a beginner - the fabrics were lovely and so were the flapjacks! Amanda was very patient and helpful with knowledge, experience and advice you just can't get in a quilting book. Thank you!

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:

Dear Zoe, Thank you for your review. You progressed so quickly during the day as you made your first quilt - you took to quilting like a duck to water! I hope you get lots of pleasure from this new craft.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day spent with Amanda learning the skills of traditional quilt making. As it was one to one tuition from a very experienced quilter it was fabulous. I even managed to leave with my own quilt sampler. Couldn’t recommend the day enough.

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:

Thank you for your review Pauline. It was a pleasure to teach you yesterday in the studio. I hope your sampler quilt will be just the beginning of your quilting experience!

What a great day! Very patient teacher with a novice and full of tips and tricks. Everything planned perfectly so I went home with a great mini quilt, having tried the techniques needed to make a full size one. One to one teaching means you have someone making suggestions and sharing expertise all day and so learn quickly. Aftercare great too- follow up email with more tips and a newsletter and advice re suppliers. Feel I’ve taken a leap forward and have the confidence to get started on my own!

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:

Dear Angela,
Thank you for your review. I am delighted that you are now launched on your quilting journey!

I really enjoyed my day with Amanda, her studio is in the beautiful surroundings of Ushaw college. All COVID precautions had been taken and rules observed at all times. This was my first time quilting but after Amanda’s excellent tuition I am confident in giving it a go myself. I was given lots of advice and tips to help with my future projects. The course was delivered in a comfortable atmosphere and led by my pace, as the course is one to one it could have been intense but it was amazing how quickly the day passed. I left with a completed quilt. I would totally recommend this course to anyone looking to begin quilting.

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:

Thank you for your review, Barbara. I'm glad that you enjoyed the day at Ushaw. It was nice to have fine weather, so we could eat lunch outside in the grounds. I hope you continue to enjoy quilt-making in the time ahead.

I thoroughly enjoyed my course with Amanda. I’m a first time quilter and was shown lots of good basic steps to get me started. The quilt I left with is really lovely. She followed all covid rules and made me feel very safe. Additionally the building she works from is beautiful, adding to an altogether great day.

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:

Thank you for your review Pauline. I'm glad you enjoyed the day and hope that it will be the beginning of a long and pleasurable journey into quiltmaking.
