If you have always wanted to try quilting, this course is for you. This is a one-day course, including six hours individual (one-to-one) tuition time, for absolute beginners to quilting and patchwork. The course will introduce you to all the basics for making a quilt: choosing fabric, cutting, joining pieces to make blocks, joining blocks to make rows, adding a border, quilting, trimming and finally binding a quilt. You will leave with a small quilt as a sample and with the skills and information to go ahead with tackling a full-size quilt in the future.
The course is taught in my studio in a beautiful historic building (Ushaw, near Durham in the North-East of England). You only need to know how to use a sewing machine before you come. This is a full, but relaxed course, which will be tailored to you (as the only learner that day), so that you get the most out of it.
Covid-19 information: Ushaw is fully compliant with current government directives for workplaces. All visitors are asked to wear a face covering in the public areas (corridors, stairs and toilets) and to sanitise their hands on entering the building. In the studio, masks are not required; a one-metre distance is maintained, the window is kept open (so bring an extra layer of clothing!), all surfaces and equipment are cleaned and sanitised before your arrival. There is a wash-basin in the studio and paper towels and hand-sanitiser are provided.
Tutor information: Amanda Jane Ogden is a qualified and experienced teacher of textiles, who designs fabrics and writes quilt and sewing patterns for national magazines and for sale online.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
All the tools and equipment for the day are provided, including the use of a sewing machine. Materials (fabric, wadding and thread) are included, but you are welcome to bring your own fabrics if you would prefer that - the tutor will offer advice once the booking is made.
Coffee or tea is provided (with biscuits) mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Allergies and intolerances can be catered for. The outdoor 'Bounds' cafe at Ushaw is available, where you can buy a simple lunch, or you can bring a packed lunch.
Free parking is available at Ushaw. Suggestions for overnight stays nearby can be given.

Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:Thank you for your review Tracy. I hope this will be just the start of your quiltmaking! Looking forward to seeing the photo of your finished item.
I really enjoyed my day with Amanda, her studio is in the beautiful surroundings of Ushaw college. All COVID precautions had been taken and rules observed at all times. This was my first time quilting but after Amanda’s excellent tuition I am confident in giving it a go myself. I was given lots of advice and tips to help with my future projects. The course was delivered in a comfortable atmosphere and led by my pace, as the course is one to one it could have been intense but it was amazing how quickly the day passed. I left with a completed quilt. I would totally recommend this course to anyone looking to begin quilting.
Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:Thank you for your review, Barbara. I'm glad that you enjoyed the day at Ushaw. It was nice to have fine weather, so we could eat lunch outside in the grounds. I hope you continue to enjoy quilt-making in the time ahead.
I thoroughly enjoyed my course with Amanda. I’m a first time quilter and was shown lots of good basic steps to get me started. The quilt I left with is really lovely. She followed all covid rules and made me feel very safe. Additionally the building she works from is beautiful, adding to an altogether great day.
Response from Amanda Jane Textiles:Thank you for your review Pauline. I'm glad you enjoyed the day and hope that it will be the beginning of a long and pleasurable journey into quiltmaking.
