Description

This online course shows you how to make your very first quilt. So long as you can use a sewing machine to make a straight stitch, you will be fine because everything else is explained. You will be making a small square or oblong quilt (big enough to be a throw or playmat or cot quilt). You will make design decisions, cut and join fabric pieces, then join rows, layer up your quilt, add quilting and finally finish and bind it. Tutor information: Amanda Jane Ogden is a qualified and experienced teacher of textiles, who also designs fabrics and writes quilt and sewing patterns for national magazines and for sale online.

What's included in the price?

Fifteen short segments of video material, plus lists, notes, diagrams to take you through every stage of making your first quilt. A full quilt pattern complete with photos to make the quilt. When you buy this course, Amanda will send you a private link to the video, plus a PDF of the pattern.

What you will need

Equipment: sewing machine; a rotary cutter, quilter's ruler and cutting mat; an iron and ironing board; dressmaker's pins; quilter's safety pins; scissors; coloured crayons, sewing needle. Materials: a shopping list is given at the beginning of the course and full details are enclosed with the pattern.

I particularly liked her focus on how to be as sustainable as possible - for example explaining the best sustainable wadding to use. "It was good that the course is made up of a number of short video clips, making it easy to return to different points of the process when I had got to that point and being able to repeat them for greater understanding. Instructions were clear and well illustrated. I have now completed my quilt! It doesn't bear close inspection, as I didn't line up all my squares correctly and I found it difficult doing the corners on the binding, but it looks good and I wouldn't have been able to do it without this course."

"Excellent, well thought out course and Amanda Jane is a great teacher who explains things patiently and well. With this 1-2-1 course I was able to learn and practice hands on all the steps to make a small quilt : cutting, sewing a few different patch styles, and then joining the patches, creating the layers, basting, quilting, adding borders and binding. I came away with a finished miniature quilt, and the skills needed to make a full size quilt. The individual tuition helped me learn all this in 1 day so was really time efficient and I think good value vs a 2-3 day beginner course to cover the same skills in a group. I would definitely recommend this course and Amanda Jane as a teacher. "
