About the Course
I am City & Guilds trained and qualified in soft furnishing making and hold Level 3 Award in Education & Training. I will teach you how to make bespoke soft furnishings to a professional standard.
These 2 workshops are more suitable for those with some sewing experience.
You will learn how to produce professionally finished curtains, considered to be "high end" luxury. Following traditional techniques, they are predominantly hand sewn with weighted hems and mitred corners. The internal layer adds a sumptuous feel and appearance, whilst acting as an insulator. You will learn how to pattern match and join fabrics, create different handmade headings including double & triple pleat, box, cartridge, and goblet pleats.
Interlined Roman Blind
The methods used to construct this type of Roman blind are at the top end of soft furnishing making. You will learn how to construct a blind with an internal layer, which gives structure, luxury and insulation properties to your blind. The rod pockets on the reverse of the blind are contained within the lining fabric and there are no unsightly stitch lines showing on the front of the blind.
You will learn how to construct a blind, both with a standard fold, where all of the pleats stack neatly on top of each other and also learn how to set them so that they cascade, known as a waterfall effect. The techniques covered are essential if you are thinking of starting your own business making soft furnishings or if you would love to make luxury items for your own home.
I have devised a Roman blind calculator which eliminates all the complicated maths necessary when working out your rod pocket placement, both on the face and the lining fabrics which can be particularly difficult on cascading blinds. You will be given permanent, free access to this. (Requires Excel or compatible software.)
This is a full day workshop where you will make a sample size Roman blind. This will include all of the techniques required when making and hanging full size blinds and will become a valuable reference. You will be given comprehensive notes which include step by step instructions.
You are legally obliged to make any blind compliant with current safety legislation. We will discuss your legal obligations and I will demonstrate what is required.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Janet’s one day workshop for interlined, cascading Roman blinds was excellent in every respect. She is so friendly, really knows her stuff and her teaching qualification means she is a good tutor. I am amazed at how professional the resulting sample blind looks. The hints, tips, and low-cost gadgets that Janet shares are so useful. Delicious lunch. Brilliant notes and calculator.

I had previously purchased an on-line course and several books in the hope of learning how to make Roman blinds, but it seemed impossible to follow the instructions correctly. Last week, I travelled a round trip of 120 miles to attend Janet's course, but it was so worth it. I have since made 2 beautiful interlined blinds that would have cost me hundreds of pounds if I had had them made. I'm not very experienced at sewing but it was easy to learn from Janet, who patiently demonstrated every step and supplied me with informative easy to follow instructions and access to a spreadsheet that makes it so easy to calculate pleating the blind. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and cannot recommend this course enough. I have booked to attend the interlined curtain course already. Thank you Janet, you are a fabulous teacher, looking forward to seeing you again soon.

I spent the day with Janet, to learn to make interlined curtains. The course was truly excellent. I learnt so much - making a curtain from start to finish over the course of the day - and had such a very pleasant time throughout, that I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone else who wants to learn to make beautiful curtains. Janet really knows her stuff, and not only teaches you the right way to do things, but very helpfully points out the potential pit-falls to be avoided!

Another great day with Janet. I learnt the tricks of the trade about hand stitched roman blinds earlier this year and returned yesterday for a lesson in hand stitched, interlined curtains. Again, Janet was able to share top tips to make a fantastic product as well as sharing ways in which she dealt with the large pieces of fabric which curtains inevitably are. I would recommend her courses to anyone who wants to make professional looking window dressings. You won’t be disappointed.

After alot of searching for courses I finally found Janet's Make for Home range of courses. I am a complete beginner, I have made a few simple curtains but wanted to try making Roman blinds. I really enjoyed the course, found the time went too quickly and Janet is very patient and explains the process in simple terms. Detailed course notes were provided which will come in very handy when I make my first blind.
Janet is a lovely lady and looks after you very well with home made lunch, tea and biscuits throughout the day. I travelled from Liverpool to attend and wouldn't hesitate to book another course, best one I have been on.

I booked this course based on the positive online reviews and I was not disappointed. I completed a sample Cascade Roman Blind to take home along with a complete set of notes and access to a calculation sheet for calculating the spacing which will be invaluable. Janet is very knowledgeable and patient and gives you lots of tips. She made me feel very welcome and I was supplied with lots of tea throughout the day. I had a most enjoyable day and agree with other reviewers', if you want to try making Roman Blinds, Janet is definitely the lady to teach you.

Having spent the day with Janet I completed a sample cascade Roman blind. I have made ordinary Roman blinds but found Janet's course very informative and her calculation sheet for working out the spacing was excellent. Janet is a very knowledgeable lady and is happy to share her knowledge and advice, The day went too quick having been supplied with lots of tea and home made cake but I left with a sample blind and lots of information. If you want to try making a Roman Blind, Janet is the lady to teach you.
