About the Course
'Introduction to weaving with the rigid heddle loom.' Come and learn the craft of hand weaving with Dunja Roberts on our traditional hill farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park. On this Beginners workshop you will learn how to select your weaving materials, warp the loom and weave a lovely runner or scarf in your chosen colour way all in one day. The landscape of the Brecon Beacons inspires creativity whatever the season. This is a day to forget the stresses of daily life, to return to the skills we used to value more, and to have a lot of fun - you will never think of cloth the same way again!
Although the rigid heddle loom is a simple piece of equipment, it is possible to weave beautiful pieces with it. It is the ideal introduction to weaving, and from here you can attend courses to develop further skills with the rigid heddle loom or move onto weaving with a four shaft or eight shaft table loom or floor loom if you wish.
If you would like to gain a qualification in hand weaving you might like to consider the Level 1 unit in Weaving with a Multi Shaft Loom.
Basic weaving terminology
Prepare a warp using the direct warping method
Warp the loom
Weave your cloth
‘Finish’ your handwoven cloth
By the end of the day you will have proudly woven your very own fabric suitable for use as a table runner or scarf.
We offer luxurious B&B accommodation in a double/twin room with private shower room and use of a sitting room with fantastic views across the Rhiangoll valley. Why not take a few days out to learn a new craft in the stunning setting of the Brecon Beacons!
I am a qualified tutor and assessor in the Lifelong Learning Sector and have many years experience running practical courses. I also undertake spinning and weaving commissions for clients who wish to have fleece from their flocks hand spun into yarn and woven into cloth. I am passionate about promoting our wonderful British sheep breeds for their fleece; when not weaving and spinning I assist on the farm and during the summer months show our Clun Forest and Zwartbles sheep at the larger agricultural shows in Wales and the Midlands.
Bespoke workshops can be arranged at other times, please contact me to discuss your requirements or follow the link to my website.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?

Great day and so nice to be able to take something home at the end of the day that I had produced. I have now finished all the tassels on my scarf and I am looking forward to wearing it.
The course is a very good introduction to weaving and by the time you leave at the end of the day you feel confident in the skills you have learnt.

I really enjoyed my time at Dunja's studio learning to weave. I was a complete beginner but under Dunja's patient and expert tuition I came home with a beautiful scarf which I'm really pleased with.
A great way to spend the day learning something new in lovely surroundings. Thank you Dunja.

I am a relative novice in relation to weaving, my previous experience consists of an enjoyable two hour workshop in Suffolk where the loom was set up on arrival and I just shuttled a bobbin back and forth, and being about 6 years old and wrapping string around cardboard before wiggling bits of long grass through the threads... . I enjoy most crafts and having recently moved to Wales felt it was time to put my toe in the weaving water. A quick search online brought me to All in a Spin, and after a couple of emails between myself and Dunja I found myself in the company of 5 other would be weavers at her delightful, warm and welcoming studio. (I believe that the classes are generally no more than 5 but my friend hopped into the car at the last minute wanting to share the adventure...). The class started promptly at 10.00 and Dunja's clear explanation, patience and step by step approach took us from warping the loom to weaving and then finishing in 6.5 hours. We all managed to make a scarf and there was choice as to pattern and colour, which gave the class a personalised feel. Dunja was there every step of the way to help overcome any missthreads and tangles or just to advise and explain. Hot drinks and biscuits were provided, (an introduction to McVities thins), and the lunch break allowed us as a group to chat and share experiences. (There was a microwave if anyone was wondering). All in all a wonderful day and, with the clear printed step by step guide that Dunja provides, I feel that if I were to invest in a rigid heddle loom I would probably be able to get weaving. Oh, and I came away with a lovely checked scarf! Thank you Dunja, I'll be back.....

This is a great day getting to know about weaving on a rigid heddle loom. Dunja is a superb teacher and explains everything clearly so that you pick it up quickly and can come away with a finished article with minor finishing elements. I really enjoyed spending a day with people looking to learn a new yarn craft.

I did the one day beginner’s course, had a relaxing yet stimulating day, and came away with lots of enthusiasm and the knowledge to plan, warp up and work on my own projects. Dunja paces the course very well and gives attention and help to each weaver as needed, offering a wealth of knowledge and skill. The course is very hands on, with everyone involved from the start. It was great to be able to take away a finished piece at the end, and my only regret was not signing up to a second day. There’s a peaceful rhythm to the course and to the weaving itself, and the studio and surroundings are beautiful. Thank you for a perfect day, and an excellent introduction to weaving!

Brilliant course! The workshop facilities are excellent and Dunja's teaching is well paced, very informative, clear and friendly. It was a relaxed day with lovely people, fiendly chat and the satisfaction that comes with learning a new skill. As a complete weaving novice I was pleasantly surprised how simple the rigid heddle looms are to set up and get weaving fast and delighted to come away with a useable scarf. We did the improvers weaving course the day after and couldn't wait to get started!
Thanks to Dunja being very accomodating we were able to have three days of tution to learn weaving and spinning whilst staying the the fabulous Weaver's Cottage just next to the workshop. The cottage is very well set up, as fabulous views and it was lovely to settle in for an evening in front of the log burner after a very enjoyable days learning.

My partner and I took the Beginners’ Weaving course at All in a Spin with Dunja Roberts because we wanted to learn something completely different. We had an amazing time. Dunja is a careful, patient instructor and both of us felt we learned a huge amount during the day. The other people on the course were lovely and the studio is gorgeous. By that weekend we had decided that we had to get our own rigid heddle looms. Two months on and we have already woven 14 scarves between us, most of which are to be sold for charity. Whilst the device is simple, a rigid heddle loom can produce remarkably complex and beautiful designs and with Dunja’s guidance, you simply can’t go wrong. We booked in for Weavers’ Intermediates shortly after collecting our looms.

This was a brilliant introduction to weaving. Dunja is a very good teacher with an impressive knowledge of both weaving and spinning. She is very supportive and gently guides you along and I am amazed how much I achieved in just one day. It’s a great craft to try with all sorts of exciting possibilities for future development. Thank you Dunja.
Sharon Thomas - - #10812
I knew from a previous course what a thorough and patient teacher Dunja was, she also is able to inspire confidence even in a beginner. This was the first weaving I have ever done and was amazed at what could be achieved in a day.
Trish Gilbert - - #10793
What a fantastic day! I learned so much and was so inspired I came away with a loom of my own - will definitely be back for the 'Improvers Course'!
Shena McCulloch - - #10783
Had a fantastic day. The time flew by with everyone having fun weaving, chatting and brilliant teaching. We have booked in for the second course.
James - - #10685
I cannot recommend attending one of Dunja's courses enough. The workshops are held in a beautiful setting and the course covered everything you needed to know to create a beautiful scarf of your own choice. It was an extremely relaxing and cosy experience and Dunja was always on hand to help students through all stages of the weaving process. I will certainly be looking to attend more courses in the future!
Rachael Lewis - - #10644
I came to the course to accompany a friend who wished to do the rigid heddle weaving course and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Dunja is a lovely, patient and helpful teacher who clearly loves her job. I managed a table runner, and have now done the finishing touches and for a first effort am pleased with the result. A relaxing day learning a new skill and the views from the farm are beautiful.
Heather Gregory - - #10266
Recently had a lovely relaxing day learning to weave on the rigid heddle loom. Hadn't used one before. It was fascinating to learn how to set up the loom, choose the yarns and design and make a scarf and it was all done in a day. Beautiful surroundings too - very peaceful. Would thoroughly recommend the course and Dunja, the very patient tutor, to anyone who wishes to try this lovely craft.
Jill Ross - - #10264
I can only agree with all the other glowing reviews. A great day; just wish it could have been two so my scarf could have achieved a respectable length. (That is due to my short(!)comings as a pupil, and in no way detracts from the excellence of Dunja's teaching skills.)
Rosie Fearn - - #9046
Lovely space with amazing views to learn about weaving on a rigid heddle loom. Dunja is a talented and patient teacher. I can't wait to practice new skills learnt and look forward to booking on the advanced course. Thank you Dunja
Kirstie Gardner - - #8977
I had a wonderful day learning to weave in this spectacular location. I was a complete beginner but learnt so much during the day with Dunja's help. To cap it all I went home with a beautiful scarf which I have worn most days since! I have definately got the bug and after some practising at home on my newly purchased loom I would love to return to 'All in a Spin' for a more advanced course. Thanks Dunja for a really lovely day.
Carol Ibbetson - - #8227
Learning was very enjoyable, helped very much by the relaxed and calm atmosphere. A lot was covered in the day, but the various aspects were taught in a rigorous way with nothing glossed over or hurried. Dunja has a wonderful way of adapting to each student's learning needs, and she guides and encourages in such a way that learners are able to grasp fully each element during the day. The opportunity to weave a piece of fabric from start to finish was very exciting and rewarding. Many thanks Dunja for your knowledge, enthusiasm and patience. This course can only be very highly recommended.
Christine - - #8209
I loved this day! I'd been trying to find somewhere to start learning to weave and Dunja did a fantastic job on a complete beginner. Her approach is great - friendly, clear, calm, professional and she lets you get on with it until you make a mistake (which she always notices!). Now I just want to learn more weaving and certainly hope to learn more with Dunja. and the location is spectacular and inspiring - I certainly recommend the whole experience.

I had such a lovely day and didn't want it to end. A great introduction to Rigid Heddle Weaving. Dunja is a wonderful teacher - patient, welcoming, thorough, highly knowledgeable, supportive and skilled on all levels. A beautiful location and a beautiful space. I would have happily stayed in Dunja's calm and tranquil space weaving away for days. I will without doubt be back for more soon.

This is the third workshop I've attended with All in a Spin and I thoroughly enjoyed all of them.
The workshops are held at Dunja and Brian's beautiful farm in the magnificent Black Mountains. This time I learned to design a scarf, calculate the amount of yarn required, warp a loom and weave the scarf. Throughout, Dunja was on hand to pass on helpful tips and steer us through the process.
I recommend All in a Spin to anyone wanting to learn the basics of weaving on a rigid heddle loom. Dunja is a patient and encouraging teacher and a skilled weaver. I look forward to the next workshop.
Nerys Osbourn - - #7437
David and I had a wonderful weekend. Dunja was a very good and patient teacher. It was my first experience at weaving yet I came away with enough confidence to carry on at home. I would definitely recommend this course.
Sharon Humberstone - - #6856
An excellent introduction to weaving for a complete beginner. Dunja is extremely knowledgeable and very organised. She was able to give each of us in the group just the right sort of help we needed to complete a piece of weaving. Lots of tips as well as handouts to help me continue. I was so inspired and enthusiastic that I purchased a loom to continue practising at home! I learned to spin with Dunja last year and it was great that she encouraged me to bring and use some of my own yarn to use in the finished product - I felt very proud of my scarf! I look forward to returning to glean more information from the 'fibre preparation' course soon.
Elaine Perry - - #5963
I simply loved this course. Dunja is very welcoming. Her knowledge of her craft is extensive coupled with an excellent teaching technique and endless patience together with very small classes ensure that all students get the support that they need. Each of us came away with a viable piece of cloth that could be used. I cannot recommend this course highly enough. I will certainly looking to return to build on the excellent foundation that I have been given.
Chris Roberts - - #5962
Dunja has set up a delightful small business in her lovely farmhouse, set in stunning scenery. Her professional and enthusiastic attitude inspires confidence in her abilities as a teacher - the website, equipment and materials are good, as are the accompanying notes. For a complete beginner I can thoroughly recommend this weaving course.
Linda Price - - #5955
Had a wonderful day with Dunja and three others, learning to weave our scarves. It was great seeing us all come to grips with our new skill and produce our weaving. Dunja is an attentive, generous teacher with a keen eye for detail and I learned much from her and also from the group as we shared our learning and overcame problems. I returned the next day for some one to one tuition to advance my skills and Dunja was flexible, encouraging and inspiring. I would definitely recommend her as a teacher and hope that our paths weave together in the future.
Sue Llewellyn - - #5809
Had a lovely day learning to weave with Dunja. She's a patient and generous teacher and despite my reservations about weaving I did indeed come away with a beautiful handmade scarf and a curiosity as to what else I could achieve with my new found skills. The location is also lovely with spectacular views. What comes across most in the course is Dunja's enthusiasm for her craft and for teaching, even if you decide weaving isn't for you, you will still get a lot out of this fantastic course
Becky Preston - - #5803
Excellent day's weaving with Dunja. Taken through the process step by step in an unhurried way. Very easy to understand the why and the how at beginner's level. Had been a little worried about warping up, but it was explained so well that it was not difficult at all. Thoroughly enjoyable day.
Euth - - #5765
Calm and peaceful day (once I found the farmhouse)! Learnt a lot and Dunja changed her original course to accommodate my patchy knowledge. Came away with a lovely sample piece to make into a cushion.
Penny - - #4916

What a lovely day I had learning to weave ! Dunja is an excellent teacher- patient and encouraging at every stage. The setting is beautiful and I certainly plan to return.
Alison Watson - - #3927
After a rather stressful week, a day spent weaving in Dunja's beautiful farmhouse learning to use a rigid heddle loom was a tonic.
Dunja is a very calm and thoughtful tutor. Although I had some problems with the weave pattern I picked, she sorted them out and I learnt from the mistake.
I would recommend this workshop.
Alison Ross - - #3789
Had a fantastic day with Dunja learning to weave. She went through the complete process from choosing yarn, warpping up and finishing plus everything in between.
We all had a wonderful homemade lunch in a lovely cosy farmhouse kitchen.
Dunja is a great teacher with a wonderful calming influence, we all came away with a beautiful scarf and a wonderful day of memories.
I really didn't want the day to end but eventually came away full of enthusiasm and armed with the skills to be able to use my own loom at home.
I would fully recommend any of Dunja's workshop and hope to book onto another very soon.
Jeanette Mortimer - - #3264
Had a great day with Dunja and thoroughly enjoyed everything about the course. The setting and hospitality are second to none and I was very proud of my scarf! Dunja provides everything you need with lots of choice of materials to work with. The relaxing atmosphere made for a real day off!
Nina - - #3030
Me and my Mother had a lovely, interesting and educational time with Dunja. She was a really good teacher and we were made to feel very comfortable in her home. We'll be back to do a spinning class!
Sian - - #2973
I had a super day learning to weave with Dunja. I had always before been intrigued and amazed by woven pattern but slightly confused as to how to achieve it, so I really appreciated Dunja's very clear, calm and structured approach to teaching each stage of the process. She demystified weaving in a way that made it all the more magical. Confident that I can now weave some of that magic myself, I am saving up for my own loom...!
Zoe Quick - - #2950
I enjoyed the peacefulness of the day and even though we were very productive, busily warping and weaving away it felt calm and relaxing. I appreciated Dunja's very thorough teaching that was very hands-on and at the same time hands-off as much as possible to give me the opportunity to try things out and 'feel' my way through.
I left with a clear sense of this way of weaving being something I can do and would very much love todo more of: very empowering and encouraging!
Petra Hilgers - - #2865
I absolutely fell in love with weaving. Spent the day on a 16" rigid heddle loom and ending up buying one from Dunja and going home with it. 2 weeks on and still in love with weaving. A great introduction to an amazing craft
Lynda Clark - - #2245
Lovely day with Dunja in a fabulous setting. Dunja went through the process of weaving on a 16" rigid heddle loom, very patiently explaining everything i needed to know to get started. We looked at selecting yarn, warping the loom, weaving, finishing and removing from the loom and finally washing the finished weaving, all in one day!
I was made to feel very welcome and the day included a lovely lunch with homemade soup in Dunja's cosy kitchen.
I went home with my first piece of woven cloth and full of enthusiasm.
I would certainly recommend this weaving workshop and would like to do some spinning and fleece processing with Dunja in the future.
