Beginners spoon carving workshop - Morning

X

Description

Spoon carving is not only an enjoyable craft skill, it’s also incredibly relaxing and meditative. Join one of our experienced instructors, Monica or Mary (or sometimes both!), for an afternoon outside in nature, working with your hands at Alderfen Marshes: a SSSI conservation site just outside Norwich, Norfolk. Suitable for beginners or those who have some basic spoon carving knowledge but would like a refresher, this workshop provides an accessible introduction to the craft of carving spoons using locally sourced green wood and professional tools. You will be able to take home your creation at the end of the course and will be given tips on caring for your item (e.g. preventing splits, applying finishes and post-production care). – Please note this is an outdoor, all-weather course. Sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and layers are strongly recommended. A covered outdoor area will be provided in the event of rain and a fire pit will be lit in colder temperatures. – Due to the nature of working with axes, knives and other sharp tools, all students must be 18+ (or 16+ if accompanied by an adult). Monica has extensive experience in wood craft. She started carving 7 years ago and has offered several courses as a way of highlighting par-avion co’s commitment to heritage craft and ecologically minded design, as well as the importance of skill sharing, creative community and mindfulness. Mary lives at Alderfen Marshes and regularly hosts wild campers and conservation students on the site. She is one of Monica's first spoon carving students and has since progressed her skills independently. She sells many of her greenwood creations at local craft & farmers markets in the area, alongside naturally-grown teas and other produce harvested from the property. The course is held at an outdoor site just south of Norwich. Directions and parking instructions will be provided upon booking.

Maker

I am a furniture designer in Norfolk with a background in architecture. I got into spoon carving by accident when I had to display some ceramic dishes that all had a small chip on the rim. I decided to make some spoons and use the chip as a depression to hold them. The spoons were a hit and after years of practice, I now want others to experience the joy of spoon carving that I get to practice nearly every day.
