Do you fancy trying your hand at Spoon Carving?
Come along and learn safe knife skills in a comfortable environment and make your own spoon. No previous woodworking experience is necessary, though those with knowledge of working with wood will still find fresh challenges in the hand carved spoon.
The joy of spoon carving is that we don't need expensive tools, workshops and work benches. Just our hands and a few simple tools. You will develop skills to take away with you to be able to carve at home, sat outside on warm summers evenings or in front of the fire on those chilly winter nights.
I will concentrate on giving you a knowledge of safe grips and cutting techniques with both a straight and bent (hook) knife which are the two that we use to make the spoon.
We will begin from a rough spoon blank that I have prepared with the axe beforehand and use straight and hook knives to carve your spoon.
You will end the day with a spoon of your own and an overwhelming desire to carve more spoons - believe me it is addictive.
I will supply all the tools you need and a selection of wood to work with. I can give you information about where to go to buy good tools of your own if you want to take this further.

Very welcoming, friendly and patient tutor.
Steve was very encouraging and positive throughout.Good to feel so in touch with the wood. Totally absorbing.
We loved this session! We were totally new to spoon carving, and Steve taught us four safe and very effective techniques. It boosted our confidence and showed us a good and safe practice. We now understand how to 'see' the wood, judge the grain and use an appropriate technique to carve with that. We went and bought ourselves a starter kit to continue doing this at home - looking forward to what it will bring!
Really enjoyed the course, having previously watched YouTube videos it was really great to be able to ask the tutor questions and to get practical tips.
A great introduction to spoon carving from our excellent tutor, Steve Ridd. In just two hours our small group was shown tools, examples and cutting techniques, told about different wood and processes and given demonstrations at each stage which enabled us to craft our first item. A respectable first attempt has given rise to an enthusiastic new spoon maker.
Lovely, friendly tutor. Very informative & helpful, didn't make you feel as though you were wasting his time. I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson & will finish the spoon when my new knife comes.
The course was very informative but relaxed and informal, was well worth the money and has made me keen to find out more about wood carving
Well thought out and extremely informative clear direction and monitoring.
For someone who had never done this before, I found that the use of just 4 cuts was sufficient for me to take in for this taster session, and though a couple of them took some effort to get right, I eventually managed without losing too many fingers!
All in all, the course was really good, better than I hoped for and has encouraged me to explore some other options as a potential hobby when I retire.
This was a super course and very different to the usual craft courses on offer. A great introduction to this skill. The tutor was very engaging, well organised and encouraging. There was a good mix of group teaching and individual attention. The time went really quickly and everyone was happy with the spoons they took away with them.
Good tutor, clear instructions, interesting and great with the sticking plasters. Yes this was a challenging course, even more so for those of us who had never handled a wood carving knife before, but we all finished with good looking wooden spoons ready to finish and oil at home. I was surprised at how much we did achieve in the two hours. I hope to repeat the course again to build on what I achieved this time.
Our tutor was welcoming. He gave clear explanations throughout the length of the course. The demonstrations were also clear. He has a nice sense of humour. I much appreciated the continuous individual attention and constructive help and encouragement.
I would have liked the course to have been a bit longer to enable me to achieve a better finish to my spoon, though others seemed to be happy with theirs in the time allotted.
I absolutely loved this course! It’s my first time working with wood and it was amazing. The teaching was fab. Steve was very patient and informative. I learned a lot from how to use the tools to the type of wood to use. I could’ve sat there all day.
This is a lovely workshop allowing anyone to have a go. Its fun and relaxed and plenty of tea, encouragement and support to come away with your own uniquely designed spoon. It was so much fun I'm bringing along the whole family to another workshop :-)
I got the ticket for this from a friend and so was not something I would have actively sought out, but as soon as I got into the class and started carving I could instantly see the appeal. It's just something about the feel of a sharp knife on wood and the ease with which you can remove long curls of material, carve nice curves and so forth that made it so satisfying. With the majority of us working office jobs and rarely developing this type of skill, it just feels like a medicine for the slog of modern life.
As for the instructor, Steve is calm and clear in his delivery, but you quickly get a sense of his enthusiasm and it's infectious. When our time was up we didn't want to stop!
thoroughly enjoyed the course.excellent teacher. good balance of information for beginners and those with some experience.very proud of my efforts, although still not sanded down. something I might come back to.thanks for happy time.
Wonderful afternoon spent at The Sill learning about techniques and tools and carving my very own wooden spoon. The teacher was great, very informative and attentive, and the workshop was relaxed and friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Highly recommended!
Just been on this course. It was brilliant! Steve is an excellent teacher and reviewed ALL the tools needed and allowed hands on use of all of them. The session was so relaxed and full of useful anecdotes and other bits - the sort of stuff you can only get from a course just like this😀 Stunning and very highly recommended even if you already have some experience.
Enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere and first class instruction. Could perhaps have done with another 30 mins to progress a little further with the spoon. Otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable course and highly recommended
Thoroughly enjoyed the taster session. It was well planned and professional in delivery; explanation was clear and I’m sure everyone enjoyed the experience. It would have been good to finish the spoon but this wasn’t realistic for just over 2 hours of work.
I would highly recommend the session to others.
Great course, friendly informative instruction, enjoyed by all.
This is a really good course. Just the right level of challenge, extremely informative and friendly. The day went by in a flash because the carving and instruction were so absorbing.
I had a lovely day, the course was engrossing and the instruction excellent. Superb
