A one day course learning the fundamentals of sharpening green woodworking tools.
There is no better way to get in touch with the heritage of Sheffield and its great tradition of steel blade making than learning to sharpen your own tools effectively.
Did you know that many tools are sold blunt?
Spend the day learning a number of techniques using various sharpening equipment for green woodworking tools, i.e. axes, drawknives, billhooks, turning tools, chisels, slashers in the lovely surroundings of Ecclesall Woods.
If you have tools which are giving you problems – bring them along for Dave to look over – he will either help you get them sharp or advise you what to do. (Please restrict to 2/3 tools as you will only realistically have time to work on a couple of tools)
You will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear for working outdoors in this season. Steel toe cap boots would be advantageous if you have them.
Please let us know if you have any specific requirements or needs. Please email for T&C'S. All courses are for 18 years and above.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All materials and tool use are provided for you on the day.
Refreshments and biscuits throughout the course.
Please bring a packed lunch, notebook and pen. PPE is available where applicable.
Cafe on site doing light lunches Thursday-Sunday.
All green woodworking courses are based outside. Most other courses inside based but bring clothing/footwear/sunscreen etc. suitable to working outdoors in the season you attend.

I arrived 10 minutes late but was immediately greeted with a smile and offer of tea or coffee. I found the course very enjoyable and informative. Dave and the team we’re very friendly and as you would expect knowledgeable about tools, sharpening and how to use them. Dave and his team explained all the various ways to sharpen tools and the equipment needed. Most of the other people like me on the course had watched various ways to sharpen tools on YouTube, but felt we needed to be shown one way, and the right way. Dave’s method which he’s used for years was shown and it appeared we all felt comfortable with his method. I would recommend this course to anyone who would not only like to learn how to sharpen their tools, but also maintain them to a high standard of sharpness. Excellent course, excellent venue, very friendly. I will be going again.
Great value for the money spent. Well done to Dave and Kay for squashing a huge amount of very useful information into one day. We were introduced to many sharpening and restoring techniques on a variety of tools. I particularly appreciated the one-to-one teaching and the sociable, chatty atmosphere. I would strongly advise future participants to bring pen and paper for making lots of notes and sketches. There is a lot to take in, which can easily be forgotten. I highly recommend this course.
Had a fab day from start to finish.
I was worried that the course content would not cover my needs, I was wrong, All aspects of tool sharpening was covered during the day, from draw knives to super sharp chisels.
The mysteries surrounding achieving a razor shaft cutting edge melted away with plain and simple techniques using basic equipment that anyone could buy without breaking the bank.
Good course, learnt a a lot.
Really enjoyed the course, a good mix of explanation, background, and opportunity to try various sharpening techniques. The demonstrations on a wide range of participants tools was particularly useful.
Time is of course short for much personal feedback when there are 9 on the course, but there were opportunities and these were greatly valued.
I would encourage any future participants to bring an array of tools, much of the 'added value' was in considering some of the braod range of sharpening challenges! Thanks Dave, a great day!
I learnt about a wide range of tools both carpentry and green wood related.
We learnt a simple and easily applicable approach to all tools which will not break the bank.. but requires practice and commitment. This was great.
There were occasions when it would be helpful for the excellent facilitator to make sure that the participant does the work and he comments on ways to improve our technique. Dave saved time and got better results by doing things himself but possibly we could have learnt more by getting our hands even dirtier!.
A very enjoyable day learning an essential skill that I just haven't got round to learning, despite its usefulness in so many crafts.
The small group brought quite a selection of their own tools and Dave also demonstrated the technique for chisels, planes, spoke shaves and knives.
A good bunch, pleasant surroundings and they even arranged warm, sunny weather for a Bank Holiday weekend. Who could ask for more?
Great course, taught by knowledgeable people in a pleasant, relaxed and informal setting. What more could you ask for?
Many different aspects of tool sharpening covered and many different tool types.
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in learning more about tool sharpening.
Really enjoyed the course, extremely informative, just the right level for me, great bunch of people running and helping with the course. A lot to take in - would benefit from a few notes on different tools and sharpening from recovering tool to day to day sharpening
