The workshop is about creating an emotive connection to your sitter, involving the technical side of oil painting through colour mixing, exploring form and colour theory. It is a figurative workshop using natural and expressive colours with the aim is to achieve a finished or near finished painting. We will look at how oil paints works and help you to develop a personal style and explore new approaches.
This is not an atelier workshop but I will be referencing historical methods. We will be concentrating on painting but some drawing will be necessary using a grid system to aid proportions.
The workshop will aim at creating a likeness and capture a sense of the sitter in the painting - this is why you should have a personal interaction with your chosen subject.
Day one is an introduction and general overview to portrait painting. We will start by creating a monochrome or grisaille under painting to explore form through shade and tonal values.
In day two we will add colour. Exploring how colour theory can help you develop your painting by looking at primary and tertiary colours.
We shall be working from photographs - a subject of your own choosing. It is imperative that you take the photo, preferably someone you know or someone you find interesting. No flash!
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

I applied to join this course with uncertainty as I was almost a total beginner in the art of drawing and painting. Over the course of the two days Karl spent time explaining step by step the whole process but also allowing you to experiment . I would never have imagined that I could have completed a portrait of my partner which was so like her.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 days and will definitely return for another weekend .
Thank you Karl
Really enjoyed the two days - only 3 'pupils' (it takes place in Karls studio) so lot of one-to-one guidance. Karl is also painting one of his own portraits from scratch so you can really see what he is reaching in action. Lovely atmosphere. Would do another workshop with him and recommend it.
I really enjoyed spending a couple of days in the studio learning oil painting techniques with Karl. I had never used oils before so was a little apprehensive but Karl was extremely patient and calm, which made me feel relaxed enough to experiment. He explained how to use oil paints, the techniques he uses and how to mix colours. It was so helpful to see how he paints by watching his demonstrations. This workshop has given me the confidence to give oil painting a go at home and I would highly recommend it.
