Description
Paint Print COLLAGE Art Course Suitable for complete beginners. A creative art course held over FIVE CONSECUTIVE FRIDAY MORNINGS. COURSE DATES: Friday 27 February, Friday 6 March, Friday 13 March, Friday 20 March, Friday 27 March Please Note: This course builds week by week so you will need to be able to attend all five mornings if at all possible. Collage allows you the freedom to play with composition and colour before having to commit! However it can also be liberating to work intuitively…layer by layer by layer. During this course you will learn expressive techniques for creating your own original painted and hand printed papers. How to cut, tear and assemble them to develope your own unique collage artwork/s. You will build skills and colour confidence and learn to express yourself. But most importantly you will also have fun! Course outline: Week One: Base papers. This week is all about going big and bold. Working in acrylics with your choice of a restricted 3 colour palette and using large brushes on large sheets of paper you will paint shades and sweeping textures. This process is both liberating and playful and a great way to explore colour, colour mixes and build self confidence. We will then move on to add and enhance these colourful papers as you explore other mark making techniques. Scraping, blowing, resist and drawing shapes and patterns with natural and man made pens and objects. Week Two: Pattern & texture. This week you will choose one additional colour to add ‘pop’ to your palette. You will increase your skills and decorative collage paper collection by exploring some simple stamping, printing from nature and stencilling techniques. It’s also time to look at your collage paper collection, both as you are working and at the end of this session and start thinking about how you would like to use them. Often the marks and patterns on the papers themselves will suggest how they would like to be used. I will be on hand to guide you as you develop ideas. Week Three: Tearing and cutting: We will discuss how to cut with scissors, craft knives and how to tear your papers. How to build a composition, finding balance and contrast. Layering foregrounds and backgrounds. How to work on more than one collage at a time. What to put in, but also what to leave out. Those who are ready may want to begin gluing down this week. But it’s not a race! Whether abstract of representational, you may want to create one larger piece whilst others may develop an idea for two smaller works. I will be there to support you in your decisions. Week Four: Building Layers: If you haven’t already begun pasting your papers down this will be the week to start building your layers. I will supply one A3 sheet of quality heavier weight paper to use as the base background for your work. I will also supply a number of ready made blank cards and envelopes should you wish/ have time to create hand made greetings cards. I am also more than happy if you would like to supply and work on pre stretched and primed canvas/es or ply wood panels. These can be of any quality to suit your budget. Please ensure you have these available by week three on Friday 13 March. I'm happy to advise on this. Week Five: Finishing Touches: We will review the creative stage each participant has arrived at and then use this final morning to complete at least one artwork. I will demonstrate some additional and optional mark making and colour techniques you may wish to use to add detail and enhance aspects of your work. We will discuss how to dry and press your work flat, and options for mounting and framing your finished pieces.

Maker
I am an artist and designer, living and working near Ely. Having been a professional designer for all of my working life, I now create artwork and surface patterns inspired by a love of decorative and historical design. I find joy experimenting with different colour palettes and enjoy the challenge of adding hand and free motion embroidery to my paper collages to add detail and texture. For me creativity is not just a ‘thing', it's a way of life. I don't differentiate between who I am, what I create and how I live my life. It is a joy and a privilage to share my skills and knowledge with others and continue to learn in return.
