About the Course

From fibres to cords, to knots, textiles, and beyond - these are ancestral skills that we've been using since prehistoric times, and plying is a great skill to learn! We'll make plied cordage using a whole range of different materials, ancient and modern. Then, using our cordage we'll make simple projects, learning more useful skills and tricks along the way. At the end of the course you'll have new skills, knowledge of how to use these skills, and a huge appreciation of the simplicity and versatility of cordage.

This is one of my 'Ancestral Skills' workshops, and I'll update my CraftCourses page when new dates are set. In the meantime, you're welcome to contact to arrange a workshop or to register your interest for future workshops. I'm based in the East Midlands but am happy to travel to run this workshop elsewhere.

I like a maximum of 10 of students for the workshop. Any level of ability is fine, with no previous knowledge required - I'm sure everyone will learn some good things!

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

The price includes materials. There are some things which you can bring - basic household things like scissors, etc. and you'll get a list of these when you book on to the course.

Want to review this course?

I loved this course. It was such a unique and brilliant idea and one which proved useful in so many ways. Helen is a great tutor. She is enthusiastic and encouraging and really brought the importance of cordage and its many uses to life. Not only did she teach us lots of useful techniques but she brought a wealth of knowledge on the significance of the subject throughout history. It was really thought-provoking to understand how what we were doing was relevant across both time and geography. The group on the course was lovely too and we all came at this with differing backgrounds and interests but making something amazing out of all sorts of wonderful materials brought us all together. I now keep thinking of more ideas for different types of cords. It’s a really great course to inspire creativity in anyone and I would highly recommend it. Thank you Helen.
