Description

If you need to discuss your van build, need advice or want help with ideas or specific problems, then this may be the ideal solution for you. Our course offers two options, a one-off session on the key elements of building a campervan, or a series of practical one-hour, live, one-to-one sessions. You choose how much help you need and what specific elements of a build, when you need them and book accordingly. Initially, you book a first session (£50), and you can then follow this by booking any number of follow-up sessions (£45. each) immediately after, or later on. These follow-up sessions are flexible (to fit around your build and your life) and the contents can be agreed nearer the date to reflect the specific build info you need, at that precise moment. During the session/sessions, you can master the fundamental key skills required to design and build your own camper van. Whether you already have a van for conversion or plan to acquire one, this personalized course provides expert advice to ensure a successful build. Do you have a friend or partner building a van or considering building a van? Then this can be a great way of getting them started or helping them along the way, especially if they are new to van building and conversion. The first session is a step-by-step overview of how to plan and build a van. Included are considerations and things to avoid, all based on Scott's experience gained over the years, on the many vans he has converted. Follow-up sessions can then be chosen with the element of the build that you are looking to take on e.g you want to put in a kitchen sink. All you do is contact Scott, arrange a time and date, and book your online workshop. All workshops have a 12-month time limit, so they can easily follow your build in real-time and you can dip in and out for information and advice. No prior skills or experience are necessary to join the course. Throughout the program, you will gain valuable insights into the tools, materials, and construction techniques Scott uses in van conversion. The sessions will be conducted online at mutually agreed dates and times, typically midweek in the evening, or throughout the day on Thursdays or Fridays. Each course is tailor-made to meet your individual needs, and upon booking, you will be asked to complete a 'wish list' so that the course can be shaped to suit your requirements. You can also add more sessions at any time if you require it. The course covers a wide range of subjects, which can include, but not limited to: Electrics (12v & 240v) Plumbing Choosing water pumps Dealing with wastewater Toilets How to cut a hole in your van! Design and layouts Insulation Van preparation before starting your build Safety planning (including ventilation, fire, carbon monoxide, smoke, airflow, gas leaks, and crash planning) Storage planning Building sequence and order Selecting tools and materials Understanding power requirements Choosing the right size cables, fuses, and batteries Wiring installation and building a basic wiring loom Installing switches, fuses, and units (e.g., USB charging points) Lighting options Techniques for attaching wood to metal Creating bolt mounting points Please be aware that within an hour we can only cover so much and these courses are designed to give you an overview only of van building and its different elements. If you need in-depth, specialised help, for a specific problem on your van/or build then please ask before you book, as this unfortunately may not be the course for you. The course instructor, Scott, is an experienced teacher with over 30 years of teaching background and a strong passion for upcycling and repurposing. He currently conducts various courses in metalwork, pallet building, woodwork, shabby chic furniture creation, and clock making. Furthermore, he runs hands-on one and two-day courses in van conversion at his workshop in Somerset. Scott is also well-qualified, running a handyman/property maintenance service and holding full qualifications in P.A.T electrical testing and management. With Scott's three decades of experience in building vans and assisting others in their van conversion endeavours, this course provides a solid foundation for a comprehensive and practical learning experience.

What's included in the price?

This course is essentially a live conversation about van building, and Scott will make it as practical as possible, despite being conducted online. What is required from you? No prior skills in woodwork, metalwork, or using tools are necessary for these courses; all you need is enthusiasm and a keen interest in learning. If you book multiple sessions, we can spread them out over a few weeks or even a few months, allowing you ample time to work on one element before moving on to the next session. This ensures you can make steady progress and get hands-on experience in your van build at your own pace.

What you will need

During the sessions, we encourage you to ask lots of questions to ensure you get the most out of the learning experience. Having a pen and paper handy is recommended for taking notes, as there will be valuable insights and practical information shared. To facilitate smooth communication, we use 'Google Meet' for all our online sessions. Therefore, you will be required to have a good internet camera and microphone which will greatly enhance your participation and interaction during the course. This way, we can ensure that you have a seamless and productive learning journey.

Maker

Scott has been upcycling furniture for many years, but it was only after family and friends asked how they could make the inventive pieces in his home that Scott first started sharing his skills. Over 7 years later Scott continues to host a number of Black Paw upcycling experiences in his workshop, helping people to create their own pieces of upcycled furniture and learn the skills needed to upcycle at home.
