Oil Painting from Observation

Oil Painting from Observation
X

Description

Carolyn is running a morning class on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

They are aimed at all abilities.

Painting from life and photographs, these classes will give you the opportunity to work at your own pace on a landscape or still life of your choosing. Even though this is primarily an oil painting class, sometimes students may wish to use another medium.

On occasions, I will carry out a demonstration when I feel that it would be of interest to the majority of the class, however, after ten years of teaching adults painting, I have found that most people benefit from working on their own painting with individual tuition from me. For this reason, the group size will be kept to a maximum of eight students, to enable adequate time to be given to each member of the group.

Equipment list

This is only a rough guide to help anyone needing guidance in what to buy to start painting in oils.

Canvas, or canvas board

Palette (flat, not one with compartments)

Palette knife

Sansodor or any low odour solvent medium for oils.

A variety of brushes – size, shape and composition (bristle, synthetic)

Pencils, 4B to HB, eraser (Staedtler are good). Sketch pad

Oil paints (Winton are reasonably priced student quality paints by Windsor and Newton.)

Titanium White, Ultramarine, Cobalt, Cerulean, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Naples Yellow, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber

A table top easel is useful.

Rags or paper towel

Reference. Images you are interested in painting. I advise you to start collecting images you find interesting, a photo of a tree, an interesting sky, for example, in addition to ‘scenes’ that you are drawn to. Simple is best!
