In-person course

Musical instrument making lessons - New Forest

About the Course

Learn to make your own guitar, ukulele, mandolin or mountain dulcimer with an experienced luthier in regular weekly classes in my New Forest workshop.

I will guide you through all the stages of construction, from designing your instrument and selecting materials (including access to my own stock of beautiful timbers grown in the national park) all the way through to a finished, playable instrument.

No previous woodworking experience is necessary, I am very happy to teach the basics of using traditional hand tools and can recommend projects that would be suitable for any level of experience.

Please note that the number of lessons required to complete an instrument will vary from student to student and according to the instrument you are making. I am happy to provide taster lessons if you would like to see if instrument making would suit you.

Feel free to send me an email with any questions.

Lessons last a minimum of two and a half hours once a week, for groups of a maximum of 4 students. I have limited weekend availability, which tends to fill up fast.

The price listed is for individuals as part of a group based on a full class of 3-4 students. One to one tuition or private two person classes available on request.

If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

- All tools and equipment are provided
- Anything that you make is yours to keep
- Secure storage for your instrument between classes
- Safety equipment where necessary
- Tea, coffee and biscuits
- Fully insured
- Secure on site parking

What's not included?

Apart from for taster lessons, students will need to purchase their own materials. You are welcome to supply your own, or you can choose from my stock. I keep a reasonable selection at very competitive prices, including timbers grown in the New Forest. If you would like to source your own materials I will be happy to recommend any of the suppliers that I personally use. Material costs will vary from instrument to instrument, and can be as little as £20-30. I am always happy to chat about this before you commit to booking, or I will cover it as part of a taster lesson.
