Ciarán at Cheshire Woodworking Courses

I would recommend this course even if you have a lot of knowledge of woodworking as I thought I did. It taught me a lot about woodworking, planning, thinking, sharpening tools and having more patience.
I have just completed the 4 day beginners course. I have to say that I am quietly proud of the stand I left the workshop with yesterday. I would have never believed what could be achieved in such a short period. Ciaran is a very experienced, highly effective and likeable tutor. He has a wealth of knowledge (and biscuits) that he is more than happy to share with the students. He allows all participants to progress at their own pace in a superbly fitted out workshop and training room.
Starting with the basics of woodworking, you will quickly become competent with a saw, plane and chisels (not as straightforward as you may think). By day 3 you will be confidently hand cutting mortice and tenon joints (prepare for some aching muscles). On day 4 your project comes together in a way you would not have thought possible.
If you have any old woodworking tools, bring them along - I found some old rusting, blunt and chipped chisels in the bottom of my toolbox, nothing special just cheap DIY Chain-store tools which I thought were only good for the bin. In a very short time Ciaran had them cleaned up and sharpened to the point where the blade literally shaved hairs off your arm! Now they are not 'cheap old chisels'.... they are 'my' chisels.
I spent a lot of time looking at the many woodworking courses available before settling on Cheshire Woodworking. It is 250 miles from where I live, but I know I made the right choice. If you are reading this, you are probably thinking about booking. The best advice I can give is book a course, you will not go wrong choosing a Cheshire Woodworking course
I can’t thank Ciaran enough. I’ve taken so much away from this course and picked up a lot of new skills for life.
The workshop is such a great place in which to learn, with plenty of space and lots of tools to practice with. His course is really relaxed and very informative and you never feel stressed or worried you will mess up as he’s always on hand to help.
Anyone who has ever thought of learning to work with wood should look no further than this course as you will learn a lot in a short period from a brilliant instructor.
This intensive beginners course is superb and Ciaran is the best instructor I've ever come across. I really cannot rate the experience high enough.
Where to start ...... first Ciaran himself ... he is pleasant, friendly, attentive and so good at explaining and demonstrating techniques. The course has a maximum of six people on it and we each have our own bench and tool set. This is a perfect number to create a great atmosphere and allow Ciaran to spend time with each of us individually. You start with an intro to the basic woodworkers tool kit and learn how to sharpen blades. Then move on to sawing and planning and by the end of day one you're cutting a mortice and tenon joint.
On day two you start to make a display stand (similar to a light weight bar stool). Over the next three days Ciaran teaches you a large number of techniques which are used in its construction - measuring and marking out, squaring up, cutting, planning, chiselling, jointing, sanding, gluing, clamping, oiling and thoughout you learn how to handle all the tools correctly. It's so easy when someone with his great skills and communication shows you how. Our group arrived with varying degrees of experience ranging from none at all, through to long forgotten lessons at school to occasional home diy exponent. We all made an attractive stand of equal quality and amazed ourselves with what we'd achieved.
Throughout the course Ciaran made us regular cups of tea, supplied endless packets of all sorts of biscuits and took us to lunch every day at the White Lion. We all arrived at 8:30 and started straightaway. Most days we finished about 17:45 and the last day about 18:30 but time flew by and I was on such a roll I could have stayed all night. Ciaran stays with you every minute of every day. You are totally immersed in a world of woodworking - Ciaran has his own workshop next door to the class workshop and he shows you bespoke pieces he is working on and discusses wood selection, hardwood suppliers, how to buy wood for your own projects and where to buy tools and what to look out for.
I strongly recommend that before you set off for the course you search your home tool box (and any that the family may have) and take old tools along to show Ciaran. He is an enthusiast for old tools and emphasises that they are often much better quality than modern equivalents and urges you not to throw them away. He'll show you how to clean them up and sharpen them and during the odd quiet moment you can use the tools around you to sharpen blade and restore them.
Above all you'll come away with great confidence and enthusiasm and eager to tackle projects that you never dreamt of being able to tackle. I found it important to take notes throughout the course otherwise I'd never remember the steps and many tips that Ciaran provided.
Go for it - if you have the slightest interest in woodworking and would like to explore whether it could become a meaningful hobby, then book onto this course. You don't need to have done the one day beginners course. Fantastic experience, thank you Ciaran and thank you Cathy, Loz, Rich, Iggy, and Chris. 28.1.20
Four day intensive beginners woodwork course -
I have just completed the four days beginners course with Ciarán, and I have to say it was the best birthday/Christmas present I have ever had.
Ciarán is a charming man and a natural teacher, his love of wood and working with it is infectious, his knowledge is extensive and he seems to genuinely enjoy sharing that knowledge with his pupils.
As a complete beginner I was delighted with Ciarán's patience, guidance and encouragement. With his help I created a table that I would never have been able to make, even in my wildest dreams, without him.
I learned so much on this course from how to sharpen and bring old tools back to life, to how to make a mortice and tennon, along with many simple little tips to make the running of the workshop more efficient without having to spend a fortune.
I was also lucky enough to see some of Ciarán's bespoke commissions, he is obviously very proud of his work and quite rightly so. His attention to detail is minute and it shows in the quality of his work, which is quite exceptional and beautiful.
If you are looking at this course, I recommend, without hesitation, that you do it. It has given me confidence and the pleasure I get by looking at my table and thinking "I made that!" is priceless.
Thank you Ciarán!
A really great experience. Learning to work with wood is one of my bucket list skills and this woodworking course by Ciarán at Cheshire Woodworking launched me on my way.
The course was a great blend of theoretical and practical - Ciarán firstly introduces you to a topic, explains the details, answers questions, performs a demonstration and then sets you off to practice. He guides you step-by-step through everything you need to know, from tools to techniques, to wood types and joints, etc. Every question was answered! This all culminates in you building a piece of furniture.
I was a total novice but there were a couple of more experienced students in my class and they expressed that, like me, they were constantly learning. Ciarán managed the class so as to ensure that no one was left waiting or wanting - each individual progressed at their own pace.
The class was a mixture of men and women of various ages, all of whom were very friendly, fun and chatty – there was a real sense of comradery in the class.
Ciarán is a lovely guy, very friendly and welcoming. He developed an immediate rapport with all students. Most importantly, his skills as both a craftsman and teacher were equally impeccable. He has a few great Irish turns of phrase that add to the enjoyment of the course – keep an ear out!
The greatest testaments to the quality of the course are that:
a) every day the students arrived early and departed late because we were enjoying ourselves so much – the days fly by!!
b) I will be booking onto another course and I know that other students from my course are doing the same.
Such a brilliant course! Excellent teaching, well-structured and guaranteed to equip you with a good set of core skills and make you feel confident about undertaking projects of your own. Ciarán is so patient and has a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and clearly loves to share them. My fellow participants were also great - we bonded quickly and were soon cheering each other on as we progressed. Some of us (me) were slower than others, but that didn’t seem to be a problem, and I never felt as though I was falling behind - just going at my own pace.
All that, and I now have a lovely table! I’m already planning my next course....
I have just completed this course and cannot rate it highly enough. Ciaran is a lovely chap with a real passion for his craft. His gun boxes are outstanding examples of his ability. The course is very intensive and we produced a very nice tall table. I have done basic woodwork with power tools but now know the difference between this and real carpentry. The facilities and equipment provided are great and the lunches at The White Lion very sociable. I have already booked myself on the intermediate course and am going to upgrade my tool kit. Thanks again Ciaran.
I've just completed the intensive four-day beginners course and can't recommend it highly enough. I'd last done a bit of woodwork at school (now a LONG time ago) and really wanted to get back into it with a view to a hobby or possibly making pieces to sell.
Ciaran is a great teacher and a smashing bloke (who also makes a mean cup of tea/coffee). The atmosphere is relaxed and very friendly and Ciaran taught us a wide range of woodworking skills, but also including tool selection and refurbishing, and some really good insights on choice and prices of wood.
There were six of us on the course and we were all absolutely delighted with the beautiful ash and walnut display tables we made during the final two intensive days of the course - we didn't know if we'd be capable of it, but with Ciaran's expert tuition we were!
Everyone should do this course!
This was a great experience . Ciaran's teaching style is relaxed , but engaging and shares his experience very effectively
The course is very instructive over a whole range of areas
Ciaran has been responsive to further inquiries over my first project, which has ben very helpful
I would not hesitate to join up to the next course up
Ciaran is an excellent tutor, the course takes you from basics through to a finished piece of useful furniture - the main thing I got out of this course was confidence in having a go. I had all the books and tools but not necessarily the confidence to "go for it". Ciaran paces the course so no one is waiting or feeling pressured to catch up. His teaching manor is informative without being condescending. I positively looked forward to going in each day. I cannot recommend it enough.
I decided to take up a new hobby and found Ciaran's website offering woodworking courses. I booked the 4 day beginners course and it was the best introduction to woodworking I could have hoped for. Ciaran takes you through some basics, such as tool sharpening and the correct and safe way to use the tools and marking out the cuts to start with. The class size is a maximum of 6 which guarantees plenty of personal tuition time and there are as many tea breaks with biscuits as you want.
The course is fairly intense and physical but the rewards are worth it. In 4 days I made a small side table using American Black Walnut and Ash and I was very proud of the result.
Loved every minute! Ciaran’s teaching style is relaxed and encouraging, I learnt so much. When I thought I was struggling with a technique, Ciaran gave me hints and tips and never rushed me, letting me get there in my own time. I really appreciated his tutoring style and sense of humour!
I was a total novice but now have the confidence to pick up a chisel/ plane or saw, knowing how to use and look after them....properly!
I was delighted with this course and would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about tools and techniques in wood working. The group sizes are perfect, so can spend as much or as little time you need with Ciaran. I felt a real sense of achievement, knowing everything we made was with hand tools.
After 27 years of corporate life and countless courses, this stands out as the best course by far, partly because woodworking was something I have a personal interest in but also because of the excellent instructor, Ciarán, as well as the stunning location and fantastic lunches at the White Lion. Highly recommended
I completed the 4 days beginners' course a few weeks ago and enjoyed every minute of it. It was great to learn how to do a lot of new things regarding woodworking and just as great to learn how to do properly those things I have tried before!
The teaching was excellent; Ciaran explained very clearly and was always on hand to lend help when needed. To be able to go home at the end of the course with an item of furniture of which I could be proud was fantastic. I am certain that everyone on the course not only benefitted from what we all learned but also enjoyed immensely the conviviality of the four days.
Thanks, Ciaran; I look forward to doing a few more jobs and then taking on the intermediate course.
Ciaran is an inspirational teacher and is passionate about tools, wood, making beautiful things from wood, and passing on that love! The four day beginners' course was packed with useful tips about how to get the best out of tools and materials, in addition to how to make neat mortice and tenon joints and other basics. The course was great fun and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking to learn the basics properly or to improve the quality of their work.
I was a genuine woodwork beginner, Ciaran's background in teaching meant that everyone (with different abilities) on the course was catered for. I enjoyed every day, learnt new skills, was inspired and Ciaran shared many tips and gave lots of knowledgeable advice from how to renovate and maintain tools to where to source wood. To sum up the course in one word it would be AWESOME.
As an absolute beginner in any form of woodworking I thoroughly enjoyed this course and I learnt so much. From understanding how to care for, maintain and use hand tools properly and safely, to building an Ash and Walnut display table using a various array of techniques, all patiently taught by the master craftsman that is Ciarán. His relaxed and encouraging teaching style quickly allayed any fears I had, meaning I could enjoy the course from the very start.
I am now working on a few small projects to build more confidence and skill before booking myself on the intermediate course
Th course was fantastic, it has given me the basic knowledge needed to start my own practice. The workspace is brilliant, and there are all the necessary tools if you don't have your own. Any questions you have are answered enthusiastically and there is an overall energy that spurs you on to do well and continue creating, designing and experimenting.
I really recommend Cheshire Woodworking if you want to start getting into Woodworking. The 5 day beginners course was amazing and I always looked forward to it coming around each week. During the course I learnt alot, Ciarán explained everything brilliantly. I had the achievement of producing a piece of furniture at the end which was wonderful. From this experience I now feel ready to continue to give other woodworking items ago with the skills I have gained. In the future I am considering attending the intermediate course which looks great. Ciarán is so dedicated to his students and wants them to succeed in the items they produce. The course was so enjoyable and I met some lovely people, we all also enjoyed our meals at the pub and lovely cake and tea in the workshop.
A very big thank you to Ciarán as all the students on the course produced lovely items. A very worthwhile course indeed!
I've just completed the four day intensive beginners course and absolutely loved it. Coming into the course I could barely saw in a straight line and at the end of 4 days I left with a beautiful piece of furniture that I still can’t quite believe I made.
Ciarán is passionate about woodworking but also showing others that they can do it too no matter how little experience they might have. Ciarán’s background in teaching really shows, the class was perfectly paced and small enough that not only everyone got the help and advice that they needed from Ciarán but also got to know each other well, chatting and helping out where needed.
I have come away with new skills and the motivation to build on them going forward. I would recommend this course without hesitation, oh and the lunches everyday were excellent!
I completed the 4 day intensive course at the start of march. its a very good course. Ciarán is an excellent teacher and deserves the full 5 star rating and that doesn't include being fuelled by all the teas, coffees and biscuits he plied us with. The course and Ciarán has spurred me on into taking up woodworking as a hobby, and to possibly take it further later on.
I'm now making a jointer plane with ash from Potters and some mahogany I got from the local amenity tip! The next job will be a workbench :)
Thanks Ciarán, much appreciated.
PS. good tip on Roys Relics, I picked up a No.3 and a No.4 1/2 Bailey along with a couple of other bits :)
I've just completed this 4 day course and can honestly say it was absolutely fantastic - I returned home a very happy and satisfied person with my new piece of hand made furniture. Ciarán is an amazing & engaging tutor - full of passion, knowledge, patience and encouragement. The 4 days flowed seamlessly and there was never a dull moment. I'm going to put my newly learned skills into practice and next year take the intermediate course - I whole heartedly agree with ALL the 5 star comments below - such a top chap.
I've just completed the four-day 'Intensive Beginners' course with my 22 year old son. Challenging, exhausting but so rewarding even for someone with my limited abilities.
Ciarán is an exceptional teacher, patient, skilled and able to provide just the right level of support needed by each one of us.
Perhaps most importantly, the course was immense fun helped by an inexhaustible supply of tea, coffee, biscuits, and a really great bunch of guys.
It was my lad's idea to do this and I'm so glad we did. One day we'll be back for the intermediate level. I thoroughly recommend it.
Just completed the 4 day beginners course, thanks to Ciaráns endless patience and guidance. The last time I attempted any type of woodworking was back in school, so I really was a beginner. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the workshop and has given me the confidence to work on home projects, which was my intention when I booked the course. Would highly recommend the beginners course, and it is my intention to start saving for the intermediate course as soon as possible! Thanks very much Ciarán!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the intensive four-day course. Ciarán is a very knowledgeable and skilful woodworker and an excellent teacher – making the whole process a lot of fun. He is very constructive, supportive and patient; he has to be with students like me on the course!
The Arts Centre setting is lovely and lunch at the on-site café was excellent. As mentioned by others, we were copiously supplied with tea/coffee and biscuits throughout.
Having never done woodwork before (save the odd bit of DIY), I thought the skills taught were ideal for beginners and I learned a great deal – enough to feel confident to take my learning to the next level.
A word of warning? I became a little stressed as time went on, particularly on the last day, when I realised that I was falling behind. This was down to me, as I’m particular and fussy and made some mistakes. Three of us had to stay late on the last day to finish, and I was the last! Ciarán was fantastic with this (I don’t think it’s uncommon) and never once gave the impression that he was annoyed or frustrated. In fact, he tried to encourage me to do a little more to address the areas I wasn’t happy with.
So, as the course title suggests, it is intensive! However, I’m extremely pleased I went on it and would highly recommend it!
Thank you Ciaran.
This was an excellent course; get value for money. Ciaran is a very good teacher, I never felt hassled, or left not understanding what I was supposed to be doing. Having not done woodwork since I was at school this was perfect for me. I left with a hand crafted piece of furniture which I could be proud of. I received an in depth insight into tool maintenance and care. Quite frankly I didn't expect to gain so much from the course. I give this a very high recommendation, I was extremely impressed.
Really enjoyed the four day intensive beginners course.Very clear instruction and lots of " hands on " practice. Course gave me confidence to try the techniques and what a buzz when you achieved a very passable result! Nothing is too much trouble for Ciaran. Relaxed atmosphere but steady hard work. You get an awful lot of information, help and experience in one course!
I really enjoyed the 4 day course ! The location in the Arts Centre is great.
We were taught not just how to use the tools but how to maintain them and which ones to buy. Ciaran was so helpful in dealing with my mistakes - my finished article has been much admired and I have the confidence to try and make something on my own once my back and hands have recovered from a hard 4 days !! It is the start to a new retirement hobby and a great refresher from when I did carpentry at school 50+ years ago !
An absolutely superb course !!
Having just completed the 4 day intensive course I can highly recommend it. Ciaran is a great teacher and excellent craftsmen. His knowledge of woodwork is outstanding and he passes this on in a thoroughly enjoyable fashion. His patience, enthusiasm, great humour and plentiful supply or tea makes the days fly by (although his choice in music can sometimes leave a little to be desired). He encouraged us throughout the course, helped rectify any mistakes and was as proud of our work as we were. To top it all we not only came away with a beautiful piece of work but also the skills and knowledge to carry our own woodworking forward. Thank you Ciaran.
just completed the 4 day intensive beginners course and I totally had an amazing time and a fantastic experience,Ciaran is an awesome tutor and woodworking genius,This course caters for anyone who wants to either build on the skills they already have or a complete novice, Even if (like me) you don't know your axe from your elbo when it comes to carpentry! I learned a lot of skills and techniques over the 4 days and come away from the course inspired and very happy.
The course is excellent value for money and even your dinner is paid for along with Ciaran's magic bottomless biscuit jar and flow of tea and coffee! I would 100% recommend this course to anyone and everyone and give it an all round 5 star rating and am looking forward to joining the Intermediate course that he also runs. Thanks for everything Ciaran you're an awesome dude and also thanks to everyone who also attended the course too, a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience (I hope this gets me a discount off the next course)
I completed the 4 day intensive beginners course in November. I've still not tired of showing off my completed table!
I had done a few bits and bobs before, but this course did exactly what I hoped it would do; fill in some gaps in my knowledge and give me a foundation of practical skills that I could then progress from.
The workshop is good, and having the cafe on site with free lunch was a real bonus! It was nice to learn with others, too.
Ciaran is clearly a very skilled craftsman, and it was a real pleasure to take away even a tiny bit of his knowledge and experience. He got it right in terms of the balance between pushing you, and building your confidence. He very kindly fixed my table when all threatened to go wrong near the end!
I guess the mark of a good course is that you want to go back to the next level course and that's exactly what I'll do.
Thanks again Ciaran, see you soon!
Just completed the 4day intensive beginners course and would like to thank Ciaran for a fantastic course.
Ciaran passes on his in depth knowledge with great passion and enthusiasm, taking time to pace the course to the individuals requirements . When the course has come to an end you will be tired but so satisfied with your finished work piece you just want to start the next level.
Here's to the next course for more new skills and meeting Some more fellow trainees.
The four day beginner’s course is intensive but also very enjoyable. The added bonus being that the satisfaction / sense of achievement from producing a finished piece of furniture comes sooner!
Skills and techniques are learnt not only from Ciaran’s very passionate tuition but also from other fellow trainees who (on this course) having varying trade backgrounds are happy to pass on their knowledge.
The pace of the course is not forced by the programme timeframe. Ciaran ensures that everybody is given enough time and support to complete each stage whilst also keeping everybody engaged and working together. Ciaran was happy for trainees to begin earlier and or stay later to complete, there is definitely no clock watching.
Just finished the 4 day intensive beginners course. Ciaran is an excellent teacher, very skilled and helpful. It was a pleasure to take part on this course.
The course can begin earlier or you can stay later to complete your work.
Tiring but highly recommended, Thank you.
Just completed the 4 day intensive beginners course and can honestly say it has been the best course I have ever done. Ciaran's informal teaching style is great and not only have we left the course with a great looking piece of furniture we also have enough skills and confidence to try things on our own. With only having 5 people on the course you get plenty of time and help from Ciaran when needed. Teas, coffees and mandatory biscuits were plentiful. My body feels achy today.....but it is a good ache and a worthy reminder of the time, effort and plasters (!!) expended!
I've just finished the intensive 4 day beginners course with Ciaran and I have to say, it's the best course I've ever been on. I had very little woodwork experience before I started but now have the confidence to make my own piece of furniture using mortise and tenon joints. Ciaran is an excellent tutor, very patient and a fantastic host. He has an impressive range of teas and caters well for food allergies too. With just 5 people on the course, Ciaran was able to spend time with each of us individually to ensure we understood each task. I can't wait to get started on my own project now, as soon as I stock up on plasters. Then will hopefully be back soon to do the intermediate course.
I went from total beginner and no idea to building something I was proud of in 4 days. Ciaran was great - funny, very helpful and ensured the course went smoothly. Learnt so much that is applicable to woodwork but also DIY and definitely want to continue with what I have learnt.
I have just completed the 4 Day intensive beginners course with Ciaran and I could not recommend it enough. The understanding that Ciaran has for the materials and the passion he shows for his craft is both infectious and an absolute joy to be part of. If you're a complete beginner or have done some woodwork previously Ciaran's relaxed approach to the group ensures his time is given to everybody and you will come away with something to be really proud of . The intensive course is exactly what it says on the tin but you will have some great laughs and meet some really great like minded people.
A big thumbs up and a thank you to Ciaran for sharing his time and knowledge with our group and I have learned skills I will treasure . See you on the intermediate course . Mark
I have just completed the 4 day intensive beginners course. What an awesome weekend. I cannot believe how much I have learned on this course. Ciarán is an excellent teacher and master craftsman. The 4 days are really full on but the atmosphere is laid back and enjoyable. Overall the course was a very satisfying experience that I would fully recommend to anyone interested in learning more about woodworking. I will definitely be looking to build on my newly acquired skills with the intermediate course :)
I’ve just completed a fantastic 4 day beginner’s course. A wonderful experience of learning new woodwork skills, while producing a piece of furniture that I can take home with me and be proud of. I had the opportunity to learn in the friendly atmosphere provided by Ciaran, while he shared his wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as lots of drinks and biscuits throughout the day, not to mention the lunch together at the castle park centre. Most of all I now have the knowledge to take home and apply in my own woodworking in the future.
Having just completed the 4 day intensive beginner course, I can wholeheartedly say that if you are interested in woodworking - particularly the art of using hand tools - you will love this course. In 4 days, our group of 4 students covered loads of material culminating in a lovely ash and walnut display stand. We began with some basic but fundamental skills; tool care, sharpening, safety, specific tool techniques such as planing and chiselling, marking out and the basic joint of our project – the mortice and tenon. Over the next 3 days we went through each step to construct our piece, each an opportunity to practice skills and learn new ones. At each point Ciaran was excellent; clear in his instructions, easy going and giving just the right amount of support, not too little so you felt overwhelmed by the task, nor too much that felt an observer in your own project. Even as the final day grew well past 8pm, Ciaran was fantastic in staying much later to allow us to finish up properly and I think that speaks of his commitment to his students. Doing this course you will not come away with a piece of furniture that is perfect – however you will have in your sore and achy hands a piece you really will have worked hard to make, with a few simple tools and some new skills, and you will be proud of the end result. For me, the course has given me the confidence to go further and I look forward to investing more time in this wonderful art. Cheers Ciaran!
(Also the tea, biscuits, sandwiches, cakes etc were awesome!)
