In-person course

Family fun carving and whittling - afternoon

A fun session ends

The course fee covers an adult and child pair. Every child attending must be accompanied by an adult. The course is aimed at children between the age of 10 and 16.

Take up a sharp knife, a freshly cut piece of green hazel branch and start to make shavings! There is nothing more satisfying than using a carving knife to fashion a piece of wood to make beautiful and functional objects.

This course is designed for a parent or carer and child to learn the basics of using a carving knife carefully and safely. In our half-day session we aim to provide confidence that children can use knives creatively and that adults can guide and supervise them. We’ll also cover the basics of knife sharpening- we’ll explain why a sharp knife is a safe knife!

We’ll make sure that the activities are adjusted to meet the skills level of the participants and we’ll incorporate breaks for youngsters to let off steam after focussing on their carving.

This course will be based at Hill End Outdoor Education Centre, Eynsham Road, Farmoor, Oxford, OX2 9NJ. Hill End has 67 acres of tranquil and beautiful surroundings next to the world famous Wytham Woods used as an outdoor laboratory by Oxford University. In 2020 Hill End is celebrating 100 years of outdoor education, from when the philanthropic ffennell family purchased the Wytham estate in 1920.

We’ll operate the course in a covid-safe way with appropriate physical distancing, hand sanitisation, your own tools to use for the day etc
