Mike Reid owns and runs Handcrafted Leather, a small, award winning, professionally run leathercraft business with a worldwide customer base.
On this new two day fundamentals course you will learn the names and purposes of many tools associated with leathercraft, how to sew the traditional saddle stitch, layout a pattern for marking and cutting, how to prepare edges for finishing, how to dye and treat leather to give greater longevity to the items you create and more.
We will be paid a visit from one of the UKs leading leather suppliers, shown samples of different types of leather and their main applications, thread, tools, hardware and more. There will also be a brief presentation on the history of leather and its production and tradition here in the UK.
Over the weekend you'll be given the opportunity to build a couple of items to take away either finished or for you to work on from home. These will be decided upon before the course starts as materials and templates will need to be arranged for the course for each individual.
The options available are a large clutch handbag with a buckle or press stud closure, a belt with solid brass hardware and rivets or a lined A5 notebook cover.
These may seem simple to some, daunting to others, but all the items will encompass the use of many tools and techniques that are the gatekeepers to more ambitious projects.
This course is aimed at adults, aged 18yrs + and is suitable for beginners to experienced florists.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
The course fee of £240 includes tea, coffee, cake and a simple honest lunch such as bread, cheese and soup.
Costs additional to the course fee
You will need to bring an additional £25 for materials, depending on what you choose to make
If you would like to make a weekend of it, we offer camping at £8 per night - Students can pitch their tent in Wernog wildflower meadow and soak up the alfresco evening ambience.
Breakfast & evening meals - not included in costs. Evening feasts are down to the students themselves, but we can shop for you with a kitty of approximately £6 each per day for ingredients! With use of an outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, fire pit and fresh spring water, the formula for evening meals is to team up ‘chefs’, two at a time to cook for the rest of the group…. the bar is raised night after night and the food just gets better and better.
