About the Course
As featured in The Guardian, learn traditional leatherwork skills at Diamond Awl Workshop.
Our one day leather course focuses on making premium small leather goods, such as wallets, notebook holders, card holders and passport holders. The course is designed to teach you all the core basics of traditional leatherwork, including marking and cutting out leather, preparing the leather for hand stitching, saddle stitching by hand, skiving, bevelling and burnishing.
At the end of the day you will have made your very own small leather good by hand, from start to finish, using high quality vegetable tanned leather. No prior experience of leatherwork is necessary.
Our leather courses take place in an authentic leather workshop, which provides a relaxed, inspiring and friendly learning environment and we keep our course numbers small to ensure each of you receives the individual attention needed.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Our courses have no hidden extras. The course fee includes leather, tools, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Great mix of knowledge and hands on skills, the day flew by!
Jason and Louise are so passionate and helpful.
We left the day with an awesome item we made ourselves and the confidence to consider trying our hand at leather working at home.
Best craft course I’ve attended!

Top notch. We came for the one day course a couple of months ago as an anniversary gift for my wife. After a warm welcome from Jason we learnt a lot about types of leather and dye, tools and techniques for working with leather. The hands on aspect was great, and we came away with fantastic items we will get lots of use from. Overall, it was a brilliant day, and we look forward to coming back for the two day course sometime.

Really enjoyed this course. I found Jason enthusiastic & encouraging. It is a great studio with a very friendly & relaxed atmosphere.
I'm now inspired to have a go at home, even after just one day!
I've been looking to do a leather course for a while - glad I choose this one

Hi Jason. I cannot fault the course in any way. The setting is wonderful and the work space quirky yet entirely functional for its purpose. As a complete novice to be able to make a lovely piece of hand crafted leather in a day was amazing! The different techniques used helped me to develop my skills In a very practical way. The course runs at a relaxed yet purposeful way and your input from start to finish was presented in a friendly yet knowledgeable way. You can't help but come away feeling you have learnt and achieved so much. Thanks for a great experience.

Dear Jason, I can't thank you and Louis enough for all your help and supporting me during the past two days. I really enjoyed the course it's very helpful you were both Amazing Teachers.
Nahla - - #10249
The course was excellent. My son and I could both follow the instructions given to produce something to be proud of. We liked knowing we were using leather that minimised environmental impacts. Both of us want to attend another of Jason's courses soon. Jason's studio was a great space to have a go at something new. Later on in the day, Jason's wife was a great asset keeping a patient eye on our efforts when we got stuck. And lunch was yummy!
Amanda Al-Selman - - #10191
We both found the course excellent on all counts.
Jason is a very able teacher as well as a craftsman, exercising a great deal of professionality and skill as well as patience, encouragement and inspiration (ably assisted by Louise, of course!)
In crafting our items, we learned some of the basics of they types of leather, introductory techniques and the use of basic tools that will stand us in good stead for future work.
The setting of Jason's workshop in an old mill with a view onto the Huddersfield Canal adds to the experience and interest.
I would unhesitatingly recommend the course.

if you are looking to learn how to make leather products this is the best course. Jason is a fantastic teacher and I was lucky enough to get one to one teaching.
Jason's workshop is amazing and the perfect place to learn new skills. I will definitely be booking for the two day course in the near future.

I honestly had the best day ever.
I was lucky enough for there to be only two of us in the course that day, which meant I could ask as many questions as I needed to as we went along. Jason was fantastic teacher and really understood what I wanted to get out of my one-day course. He was easy to talk to and made a super-comfortable atmosphere for us to work in. The lunch was delicious and what an amazing building to be in!
I have worked with leather for 9 years now, although not made items myself, but still learnt a huge amount whilst picking Jason's brain. I would recommend the course a million times over to anyone who enjoys working with their hands and learning skills - and it's so reasonably priced.
Massively inspired and ordered a load of tools to continue with my leatherwork in my studio. I'm desperate to go up again and do the two-day course, which will probably be pretty soon!
Millie Wemyss - - #8282
I did the one day course and was really impressed with Jason, his studio and his teaching. I really want to come and do another course in a couple of months time and make some matching bits!
Well done Jason!

I have had a wonderful time on Jason's leather work course this weekend. The workshop is a little tricky to find, in a large mill building, but I joined 3 other people (who were doing the 2 day course) and received a friendly welcome. Jason is a great teacher, patient and good humoured, despite our many questions. I made a notebook cover, with a leather strap to fix. One day isn't long to cover all that many aspects of leather work but I felt I received a great grounding in the basics. We had an excellent lunch from a café in the building (I had a halloumi salad). Jason is happy to pass on his tips to encourage students to continue with leather work, for example, advising on what tools they might need and how to buy leather from local suppliers. I found the day really enjoyable, time flew and I enjoyed chatting with the other students. I am very keen to attend another course and would definitely recommend Jason as a teacher.

Alan Rigby - - #7203
Awesome Course. Thoroughly enjoyable, Jason and his wife were great teachers. I came away with a whole new appreciation of the amount of skill involved involved in leather making and the skills to start making my own leather goods. A great day and I would definitely recommend it.

My daughter and I flew in from Italy for Jason's 1-day leather course and it was 100% worth the 1700km journey. Jason is a relaxed and skilled teacher who has a way of teaching you how to work with leather in such a fun and detailed manner. The day flew by and we left feeling like we are really learned the essential skills needed to work with leather. We'll definitely come back in the future to attend the 2-day course. Thanks for a great workshop Jason!

Brilliant, enjoyed every minute of it. I do a lot of craft work, sewing, upholstery and my hands are screwed on the right way round, but never worked in leather . Learnt such a lot. Jason was very good at explaining, easy pace but lots of information. It was a very intense 2 day course and I have come back home to denmark and started on small leather goods straight away. My friend (from UK) and I had a great girlfriend weekend. We stayed in a local airbnb and walked to and from the mill (12min) every day along the scenic canal path. Local cosy wine bar was a must on the way home too. We will definately be back to do another course at some time. Our bags are great and we have learnt new skills, met new people and had a great weekend together. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Loved loved every minute of being in the studio! I have learnt new techniques and skills with uncle Jason that I want to keep on improving and with his patience and great teaching skills, I have handmade items that I am really proud of. I can't wait to be in the studio again :)

Can't recommend this course enough. Jason taught with enthusiasm and it was evident to me that he wanted each of his students to leave his unique studio having made quality leather products to the highest standard.
Great experience, many thanks Jason.

My Husband booked this course for our third wedding anniversary (leather). Jason was very accommodating and managed to fit us in for a one day course at very short notice. When we got there we were made to feel very welcome, Jason is a breath of fresh air, he is so passionate about what he does and his energy and enthusiasm is contagious. It was really fun learning about all the tools and processes used in making leather goods. I made my husband a card holder and he made a make up bag for me. We highly recommend the course for anyone who fancies making things out of leather or who just wants a fun day out.
Helen Dillon - - #5778
I wanted to learn some quality leather craft techniques, and I did just that. Jason taught me how to design and make from scratch a quality key holder and credit card holder. This course was really brilliant! Jason is a very patient teacher! He will teach you all the skills that you need to make a notebook holder in 1 day and a lovely bag in 2 days! People keep asking me where I bought my new leather bag ☺.
It’s a nice place to be and to be. Highly recommended if you want to learn working with leather. Thanks a lot Jason and Louise!
Jony - - #5207
I booked on to the one-day course and made a fabulous notebook holder. Jason was so knowledgeable and gave us lots of his tips and tricks to enable everyone in the group to take these away and practise at home. I've now bought the tools to make up my own leather tool kit.
Everyone in the group had an amazing day.....Lunch at the café was delicious and the endless cups of tea and coffee were fantastic......just what we all needed as we didn't stop nattering!
I'd highly recommend this course to anyone. A huge thank you Jason and Louise for a truly enjoyable day.
Jennifer - - #5017

What a brilliant course!!
My husband bought me the two day course as a very inspired Christmas present even though I had never done any leather work before. I'd tried all sorts of different crafts from upholstery to rush weaving but the two days spent with Jason in his workshop was inspirational. He has such enthusiasm and a real love of his craft which is very infectious. He is happy to share his knowledge and teach the skills required to make a truly amazing bag you can't believe you actually made yourself! Jason is very patient and his studio has a very relaxed atmosphere with great views over the hills.
A hugely enjoyable and therapeutic two days well spent..... I shall be back for more!
Justine - - #4606
This course may have changed my life!!
I've been using leather to make pieces for a while now, but I never learnt about the proper techniques and tools... I learnt SO much in one day. It was exactly what I was looking for and more!!!
Jude - - #4500
What a good day. Jason is a really ace guy with a talent for teaching and a passion for doing so. I've been wanting to get started with leatherwork for ages and Jason's one-day course taught me more than I could have hoped for.
Paul Hearne - - #4224
very enjoyable craft course, learnt how to make simple leather goods and gain lots of useful knowledge for leather and the crafting procedures in one day. Would like to join other course too. Highly recommended!
Michelle - - #4180
This is a fantastic introduction to leather. Jason is a brilliant teacher who puts his learners at ease and gives you all the support you need to produce your first pieces. I left the course having completed two items and feeling inspired to take my skills to the next level. The workshop is beautifully curated to provide an inspiring environment in which to work and learn. There's a delicious lunch waiting for you at the flying teapot too :) A fantastic, memorable day and great value for money.
Annali - - #4159
Many thanks for a wonderful day Jason.
Your workshop day is a fantastic experience for anyone who wants to learn to work with leather.
I was completely inexperienced and by the end of the day, with thanks to Jason's encouragement and patience I managed to produce a lovely finished item of which I am very proud.
Thanks again Jason for all your help. Hope to be back in the future for the 2 day workshop.

I was a complete beginner going to the course and it was fantastic, I will be recommending it to everyone. Jason's passion and enthusiasm is infectious and he gave extremely honest and helpful advice and tips (including where to source tools / leather).
The studio is great and there's a really relaxed atmosphere, Jason was a brilliant teacher and was happy to answer all the questions we had, he was open with how he went about his business and got started which was very encouraging.
if you're looking for a course for yourself or a present for someone, book this!

The one day course I did was simply fantastic! Highly professionally taught and I was amazed at how much I learnt in such a short time. I walked away with a beautiful notebook cover which has become one of my prized possessions. I can't believe I made it myself - with a little help ; )
Thank you so much Jason.
Diane Faulks - - #3524
The course was absolutely brilliant, it made what was already a growing interest in leather work even greater! I can't wait to apply the skills I learned during the day the stuff I make. Jason was an absolute gentleman, patient, insightful, massively enthusiastic and super talented at what he does.
I've already recommended it to tons of friends!
Loz Ives - - #3523
This is an brilliant course!
Jason is enthusiastic and knowledgeable and has an inspiring studio in which the course takes place. The course offers an excellent balance of instruction, demonstration and time to put this into operation which means that the finished product is something to be proud of.
The range of suggested artefacts to be made allows for a wide range of skills to be explored and executed and to be applied in further projects.
Jason was open to my ideas for a personal project and this fitted in well to another day course and there will be more.
Certainly money well spent!!
john goodwin - - #3519
This has to be the best course that I have been on!
The amount of information and skills that I learnt in one day was brilliant. From the tanning process, to types of leather, tools, planning and techniques, to making my very own unique item which I am very proud of!
All thanks to Jason, who is a fantastic teacher, very patient, gives you all the confidence you need to succeed and was open to my ideas :-) and what a wonderful relaxed space to work in, I can't wait to go back and learn some more. Thank you Jason.

"Thanks so much for your fantastic course. Teaching was very patient and inspirational, and together with fabulous hospitality and a relaxed atmosphere, it really was a first class course.
