About the Course

Explore ways of drawing with thread including hand and machine stitch, Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. You do not need to be able to draw!

Who is this course for
The students will not need any previous knowledge, experience or skills. They will just need an interest in expressing themselves through textile and using stitch in a contemporary way.

What does this course cover
Students will explore various ways of drawing with stitch, using both hand and machine embroidery. They will be introduced to a range of artists that use stitch in their work providing inspiration and enabling discussion about techniques and processes. The course will concentrate on how mark making and line can be interpreted in thread, also how thread can be used to alter and emphasis images. Students will learn a variety of hand and machine stitches that have strong linear qualities and explore using different types of thread.
Methods may include: Working on calico to produce an expressive drawing combining paint and stitch; Stitching directly onto a found postcard or photo to alter the original image; transferring photos onto cloth adding stitched detail to emphasise particular elements.

By the end students should be able to:
- Interpret different linear qualities through stitch.
- Have an awareness of contemporary artists that use stitch.
- Use specific language associated with stitch.
- Demonstrate new hand and machine stitch techniques.
- Experiment with combining mixed media and stitch.
