Create a willow cattalan platter / tension tray evening workshop ( Eastleigh Hampshire )
Description
Join me for a relaxed and rewarding evening at Hollie Barn, where you’ll learn to craft your Catalan platter tension tray, which were traditionally made with willow or a mix of hazel and willow. They were traditionally used to display bread, fruit, cheeses, etc, and can also be used as a hot platter ideal for putting hot bread on to cool down. These sturdy trays are held together through clever tension-based weaving and are perfect for serving food, displaying treasured items, or using as a decoration to add a rustic touch to your wall. In addition to creating the traditional platter, if you prefer, you can give it a contemporary twist by adding a decorative handle. You will be introduced to the techniques behind this timeless design. No previous experience is needed — just a willingness to work with your hands and enjoy the rhythm of weaving. Whether you're looking to learn a new skill, unwind with a creative activity, or connect with traditional craftsmanship, this workshop is a perfect way to spend a summer evening. Details: This workshop is taking place at this lovely converted barn located in the village of Curdridge. Please note that workshops need to be booked at least week in advance to allow me to soak and prepare the willow; after this date, please contact me via the 'message the tutor' button before booking a place.

FAQs
It is often best to start with an activity that offers a variety of small items or a larger shape that is relatively straightforward, such as a bird workshop.
You are welcome to join us for a more detailed workshop, but please be aware that you may not make such a detailed version as someone who has more experience.
If you are someone who prefers working on small precise works, I suggest starting with the workshops where we create several smaller items, e.g Xmas crafts, garden items, small birdhouses, baskets, etc. For those of you who like to experiment and see what happens, you might prefer something more sculptural. To be fair, there is no one way and you never know until you try. It will be fun which ever you decide to do.
Weaving with willow can be difficult for anyone who has problems with grip/fine motor skills/small movements, as we will be using threading and pulling movements.
It is better to make a smaller animal, or freestanding bird, if you have low energy levels. If you want to make a larger item, such as an animal with 4 legs, we will be standing quite a bit for the first hour or two, then if you prefer, you can move to sitting.
If you are not sure please feel free to contact me and we can chat through the options that might work for you before you book a place
