Cleft Oak Stools in the Yorkshire Dales with Phil Bradley

You will use traditional greenwood methods to split/cleave logs using froes, splitting chisels, mallets shave horses and drawknives. You will cleft out the stool legs, followed by axe work to remove bark and roughly shape the leg before using a drawknife on a shave horse to refine the leg shape. The stool top is planed and the top surface is finished using hand tools to give a unique tactile surface. This greenwood workshop will take place inside a spacious, relatively modern barn. It is unheated so please wear layers if the weather is a little chilly. If it's sunny and warm enough we may move outside to take advantage of the amazing views all around. Lunch will either be in the 17th-century farmhouse or renovated bunk barn. There are just 6-8 places on this workshop and Phil is a very popular tutor as he only teaches a limited number of workshops a year; please make sure that you book early to avoid disappointment. Phil also teaches our basketry and sculptural willow workshops but he has a very strong passion for working with greenwood too. He is an excellent teacher with patience and gentle humour to help guide you along the way. Stay overnight in our excellent bunk barn for an additional £20 night. It's lovely to spend a whole day with like-minded people, all absorbed in learning a new craft to create something beautiful that you can take home with you. Why not treat a friend or relative to a workshop for a birthday outing with a difference.

We have been hosting workshops for over 5 years using experienced tutors with excellent teaching skills. We focus more on heritage & greenwood workshops, to ensure that traditional skills are not lost. Working hands-on is great for mental-well being & taking home hand-crafted items is very rewarding. We are in a stunning setting in the Yorkshire Dales with amazing views of Ribblehead Viaduct, using an upstairs open plan venue in a converted barn also used as quality bunkbarn accommodation.
