About the Course

Advanced Chasing & Repousse: using these techniques in your designs and working with Silver, Enamel and Keumbu.

The course will be 2 days long, over a weekend and 10-5pm each day. Silver, copper, enamels, gold foil and tooled steel included in the cost.

Saturday: Introduction to Chasing & Repousse in silver and design.
Quick recap of Chasing techniques from beginners course.

Design- we will look at the many different ways chasing & repousse can be used when designing objects, from jewellery to tumblers and boxes and sculpture.

For example- Enamelled jewellery- can incorporate findings. The design often needs the use of cold fixings, so we will look at Tube Riveting and linkages as well as how to make our own brooch backs.
The chased copper piece will act as a dummy run, ironing out any design issues before we start in silver. It can also be enamelled later.
After lunch we will revue our designs and start working in silver. We will aim to finish the silver chasing today so that the items can be enamelled the next day.

Sunday: Enamelling- We will start with a quick enameling demo. We will start with sifting enamels and simple layering of colour.
Silver pieces will be cut out, filed and findings made and soldered as required.
The rest of the day will be spent enameling .
After cleaning up the work and adding final findings, we will end the day will a little Show & Tell!

Things you will need to bring: Silver (80 x 80mm), Silver wire and tube for findings, Copper and enamels are provided in the cost of the course, but feel free to bring along extra silver or transparent enamels if you wish. Pitch bowls and tools are provided to use on the course. Paper, pens etc are also provided.

Designs: I find that if students get the chance to think about deisgns before the course, then this gives them more time to play on the day! I tend to work with figurative imagery, such as animals, birds and plants, but abstract pattern and shape also work well. I suggest looking for a simple line drawing of your idea, and then we can make it more elaborate as we chase.
I suggest that you think about a set of jewellery that can be made inspied by your imagery- for instance a brooch and earrings based on insects. Or a large pendant and drop earrings based on leaves....
