Blacksmithing Experience in Grassington (3 hours)

Description

Please come and join me at my forge in the heart of The Yorkshire Dales for a blacksmithing experience you are sure to remember forever. In my cosy, fully equipped smithy you will have the opportunity to forge a lasting memory using age-old techniques. Each student will leave having forged at least one item of their choosing and will have the opportunity to forge, punch, drift, bend, fire weld and cut hot metal into a piece they can cherish for a lifetime. Whether it's a poker, a bottle opener, a knife or a tool for your trade, you'll leave with a great sense of achievement. Classes are for a maximum of 4 people however can be taught on a one to one basis if requested; either way, you will have my full attention throughout the day. The class is suitable for absolute beginners; male and female of any age, or for metalworkers seeking to develop a new skill in forging iron. I'll start by lighting the forge, then after a short safety briefing and demonstration, you'll be at the anvil creating your masterpiece. Safety boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty are recommended; all other safety equipment will be provided. The pictures on this page are but a few examples of things that are achievable in the class; if you have something, in particular, you would like to forge please let me know in advance and we can make it work. However, if you'd like to turn up on the day and be spontaneous that's absolutely fine too. If you're looking to spend longer in the forge making more items or a more complicated piece, then you may wish to consider the 5-hour course that is also available. Grassington is a beautiful village with walks up the river, across the Dales or through the picturesque Grass Woods. I would definitely recommend a stay in the village in addition to your day at the forge. Classes are available 7 days a week. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements; all classes can be tailored to your needs.

Maker

I'm Richard, a traditionally trained blacksmith with a passion for ironwork. I trained at Hereford's National School of Blacksmithing which gave me an excellent start into the world of forging metal. I moved to Yorkshire to be close to family and start my own business, which has given me the opportunity to offer classes so that others can have a taste of what it is like to be a blacksmith. Some examples of what can be made in the class can be seen in the gallery.
