Please come and join me at my forge in the heart of The Yorkshire Dales for a blacksmithing experience you are sure to remember forever. In my cosy, fully equipped smithy you will have the opportunity to forge a lasting memory using age old techniques.
Each student will leave having forged at least one item of their choosing and will have the opportunity to forge, punch, drift, bend, fire weld and cut hot metal into a piece they can cherish for a lifetime. Whether it's a rose, a poker, a bottle opener, a knife or tools for your trade, you'll leave with a great sense of achievement.
Classes are generally taught on a one-to-one basis, unless as a couple working on a joint project (be it a romantic date, father and son bonding or best pals day out!), so you will have my full attention throughout the day. Classes are suitable for absolute beginners; male and female from age 18 and upwards, or for metalworkers seeking to develop a new skill in forging iron.
I'll start by lighting the coke forge, then after a short safety briefing and demonstration you'll be at the anvil creating your masterpiece. Safety boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty are recommended; all other safety equipment will be provided.
The pictures on this page are but a few examples of things that are achievable in the class, if you have something in particular you would like to forge please let me know in advance and we can make it work. However, if you'd like to turn up on the day and be spontaneous that's absolutely fine too.
Classes are available Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, however, other days of the week may be available upon request.
Grassington is a beautiful village with walks up the river, across the Dales or through the picturesque Grass Woods. I would definitely recommend a stay in the village in addition to your day at the forge.
Please get in touch to discuss your requirements; all classes can be tailored to your needs.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
All tools and materials are included in the price and as much tea and coffee as you can drink. However if attending a class longer than a half day you may wish to bring a packed lunch as food is not included.

Will be going again... guaranteed ! One of the best black smithing workshops I’ve been to so far, I went for one to one tuition and in 3 hours I was taught how to manipulate the Steele, punch holes, hot cut the steel and a barley twist, to finish it off the with my first forge weld, at the end of the day I walked away with Viking bog knife and a bottle opener. Couldn’t have expected anything else from the day and looking forward to moving some more steel !!! Would definitely recommend !!
Fantasic day at the forge! Bought as a birthday gift for my partner who is really interested in the principles of heritage crafts, and he described it as the best present he'd ever recieved. Richard is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about his work and teaching, helping us to create items we were incredibly pleased with.
In 5 hours, almost to the minute, we managed to create a knife, a door knocker and a hair pin, all shaped and detailed and pretty enough to want to use. The whole day felt unpretentious and personalised to what we wanted to achieve and learn, not just an 'off the peg experience day', which I was keen to avoid. Highly recommended.
