Jane L. reviewed: 1-day patchwork & quilting workshops in Watford with Green Man Quilts

"My day of “free motion quilting” was enjoyable, informative and inspiring. Sheena has a great knack of sharing her knowledge in a humorous way. She encourages and motivates and gives tips and short-cuts to simplify tasks. The limited class size means that you get plenty of one-to-one time with Sheena as well as discussion and sharing ideas with the other students. I learned so much"

"I attended the Fibonacci for Quilters recently. Although I am a reasonably experienced sewer, I was a complete novice to quilting. The group was small enough that Sheena was able to give us individual help as needed and by the end of the weekend I had produced something that I will be proud to display!"

Green Man Quilts responded:

"It was fabulous to have you along for the weekend. You had such fabulous ideas and really worked so amazingly hard. Do send me a photo of it in situ. Well done."

"I am in my second (or possibly third) year of evening classes with Sheena. She is an amazing teacher who manages to have work rounds for my many mistakes. Her projects each term have improved my skill levels as each one is different. If you are a total novice but like the idea of quilting, Sheena's courses are just for you. I would highly recommend."

Clare Baker reviewed: Patchwork and Quilting - Non-Residential 2-day Workshops at The Ropewalk, Barton upon Humber

"This course certainly lived up to its title! Lots of instruction in machine quilting with time to practise quilting in the ditch, straight and wavy lines and spiralling within a geometric shape - and I got the maths! Sheena demonstrated free motion stitching and gave us time to practise. We were shown and helped to layer up our quilt tops in preparation for quilting. All of this was accompanied by examples and handouts. We were all given individual help and support too. The preparation and planning that Sheena does to deliver these excellent courses is outstanding. I have the confidence to take my quilting forward. Thank you Sheena. Looking forward to November."

"I thoroughly enjoyed the "Get that quilt finished" course with Sheena. I loved experimenting with the walking foot and free machine quilting. Much more practise needed!! As always the tutition was first rate, developing my knowledge, skill set and confidence to think outside the box. Thank you Sheena"

"Had a wonderful day with Sheena today. I learnt so much about my machine and how I can get so much more from it. Sheena is an exceptional teacher and makes things so much easier. I've got a lot to practise which I know I will enjoy. This was a real fun day and so enriching. Thank you so much Sheena."

"Thank you Sheena for a fantastic year. I have gained an enormous amount of confidence not only on how to use my sewing machine, but to tackle the different technicks of patchwork and quilting, from a very unsure beginner to someone who can't wait for next September.....bring on the " pinwheels ""

"I am new to patchwork and quilting. Sheena was extremely helpful especially as my choice of fabric was not ideal. She has great patience and skill at communicating. Really enjoyed myself. The time passed too quickly"

"Disappearing 9 patch is an intriguing way to make a quilt! I didn't quite get my top finished but with Sheena's illustrated handouts and her detailed demonstration of layering up and binding I am confident I will have it finished. Thank you Sheena. Excuse me, my quilt is calling, must dash!"

Helen Anglum reviewed: Patchwork and Quilting - Non-Residential 2-day Workshops at The Ropewalk, Barton upon Humber

"Sheena is a very experienced and knowledgeable tutor and has a caring approach to her students. She works hard to ensure that all participants are supported and are achieving their goals. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and I was pleased to have achieved the first stage of my quilt. As with all courses the tutor has to address the differentials between all participants. Sheena coped with this very well, however, I think it would be helpful if we could have some handouts including pictures to demonstrate each stage of the process, as I have only completed the first stage whilst some of the more experienced participants achieved more at the end of the course. I watched with interest those that were in front but I was so keen to complete my quilt I missed some of the next and subsequent stages. My quilt is coming along really well but I think I will struggle to finish it without some clearly written instructions and having invested both time and money into this it will be great to see the finished article. I look forward to working with Sheena in September."

"An excellent weekend quilting. I am always amazed at how much I and others achieve in just two days. Clearly this is down to the excellent tuition, relaxed working atmosphere and friendly co quilters. Thank you Sheena for your encouragement. See you in September."

"Sheena's Disappearing 9 Patch course was, as always with Sheena, a safe environment to push boundaries. I don't often do random - but I had decided to work in an array of batik - so the fabric lent itself to a random design. With Sheena's encouragement I stopped trying to control the layout of colours and just went for it and guess what - it looks wonderful. It is good to work at my own pace and know that I can call on help when its needed. Felt like a friendly supportive group with lots of chat and much needed coffee and muffins / biscuits. Thanks Sheena"

"Just completed 2 day disappearing nine patch quilt course with Sheena, my fourth course with her. Sheena is a gifted teacher, breaking course content down, sharing her skills and knowledge generously and inspiring us with her enthusiasm. Her flexible approach allows us to work at our own pace and put something unique and personal into our work. Lots of group and one to one help and support. Highly recommended."

"I did the course with Sharien Hussain who has already commented so eloquently. I loved it as I hadn't done anything like this ever before so wasn't sure if it was me. However it was briliant and Sheena (our tutor) was fabulous and was able to debunk all the hype and get this to my basic level of understanding. She was reassuring and encouraging and nothing was too much trouble for her, not even when each and everyone of us, made a mistake of some description or another. "A learning opportunity" as she put it. There was none of this I know better than you attitude that sometimes you get on such courses, but a clear and conscise explanation and demonstration of techniques. She gave me the confidence to give it a go, especially where the top sewing for the quilting was concerned. I haven't done any sort of top sewing for so many years and was really worried about this aspect of it. At the end of it all I managed to produce a lovely patchwork quilted cushion cover which was the whole purpose of it!! Unfortunately I can't attend Sheena's next session in this neck of the woods but will certainly be looking out to undertake more courses with her as tutor. Fantastic."

"Had a brilliant 2 days on the patchwork and quilting course. I learnt how to use a rotary cutter in the correct way. I was always frightened to use one. Wow was I impressed. I was able to make a cushion cover and started the log cabin design for a sewing machine cover. The tutor was very helpful and was able to answer the questions I asked and gave everyone equal time. She was a pleasure to be with. Hope to do another course with the tutor in the near future. Thank you."

Simple Stained Glass reviewed: Weekend Workshop and Retreat - Curvaceous Railfence

"This course was very inspirational, taking me from a 'I can't do that' feeling to a 'look what I made!' one. Sheena is an excellent teacher, patient, extremely skilled, and a great motivator with terrific focus. Anyone doing any course with her will come away with much more than expected. I hope to be back for more! The venue was very suitable for the occasion - food was plentiful and delicious and accommodating different dietary needs."

"Course/teaching- thought this was a good project as it was achievable in the time and also involved revisiting basic skills and learning new ones. Sheena coped admirably with a mixed bunch of students. Her good humour never faltered and she had time to help each of us especially at crisis points! Sheena manages to instil confidence and "can do" attitude in her students, a rare quality indeed."

"I loved this course. It was very well paced with good and useful handouts. Sheena is a great teacher, very patient explains things simply and well and is also good fun. The choice of venue was wonderful too. We were fed delicious meals and were able to sew to our hearts content with really supportive guidance, what's not to like?! AND we all finished our gloriously coloured pieces. This review is for the Simple Stained Glass course."
