About the Course
Spend a lively weekend painting from a clothed model, exploring the drama and colour of pattern as a backdrop to a portrait. Suitable for beginners and those who wish to bring energy into their portraits.
The course is taught by award winning artist Oliver Bedeman, who brings his strong colour sense and narrative to the historic canon of portraiture. Over the two days you will be given demonstrations in how to construct a picture, the principles of oil painting and an insight into Oliver’s techniques. The rest of the weekend will be working towards producing a canvas with your tutors’ guidance, ready to hang on your wall! A selection of oil paints will be available on the day, but please bring any brushes or oil paints you would prefer to use.
What to expect from this weekend course:
How to plan a painting through under-drawing
How to map the facial features and edit as you progress
Demonstrations in several oil painting techniques, from washes to oil bars with one-to-one guidance along the way
How to employ colour and pattern as a dynamic pictorial device
An exciting, costumed model setup with plenty to inspire
Encouragement to experiment with the medium, and find what personally attracts you to an image
A strong art historical context with references available, from Gustav Klimt to David Hockney
A personal, open and encouraging class
Some experience in drawing or painting will help, but suitable for all levels – we generally limit the age to 16+ years old
